Before taekwondo. There was "the Daehang karate association" in Korea.(大韓空手協会) By the order of the dictator, it shifted to ITA. However, executives of association of Karate were dissatisfied with it. "A low rank person of Karate should not become the chief executive of the system!" They withdrew from association of karate, and they established "association of Tang soo do" newly. Tang soo do is a Korean reading by old kanji notation of Karate do.

ITA executives changed their name from Tae Soo Do out of respect for karate temporarily. However, it was returned from the United States to Taekwondo by Choi which returned home. WTA Taekwondo which the Korean government established makes much of sports performance.

Thus forcing the korean to lear to defend themselves. So the whole Japanese propaganda, that Tae Kwon do or Taekwon Do, os nothing more than a korean karaté is laughable. Tell me thwn why karatékas around the world, decide to also learn the "inferior version : Tae kwon do? Kindly provide facts in you answer. Cheerw.

+luttrell1973 In competitions, such as the olympics, they use WTF taekwondo (World Taekwondo Federation). In WTF competitions, you are not allowed to punch to the head. When you punch to the body, it is only worth 1 point. Kicks to the head are worth 2, and to the body is 1. If you can keep a safe distance to your opponent while using a kick that can get you more points, why would you bother to punch. It is almost useless

Lee Won Kuk = true father of taekwondo. Choi Hong Hi betrayed his student and Son Duk Sung by luring the main CDK students away with military power and influence with dictatorial president Rhee. Choi Hong Hi even tried to get Sung's junior Nam Tae Hi to give him a 6th dan- instead her rescinded his honorary 4th dan and published it in a public newspaper. Choi Hong Hi began referring to himself as the founder of taekwondo when he was junior to both taeknowdo father Lee and his student GM Sung- the truth is the truth. Respect to Choi Hong Hi for working hard and establishing the Oh do kwan and the ITF BUT he is NOT the father or soul founder of taekwondo- he was one of several who pushed hard for the taekwondo name so he deserves credit. The father title is best reserved for the father of taekwondo Lee Won Kuk and other great taekwondo founders like Ryo Bin Jik the founder of Song Moo Kwan.

+Way Of Nothing Tae Kwon Do came from the original form of Taekkyon (or known as Subak). In 1909 Japan took over Korea and made many Koreans fled and spreading Taekkyon with it and mixing it from Kung Fu to Karate. Although some stayed underground to practice self defense. Eventually in the 1950s it was brought together as one by General Choi and became ITF. Some Kwan masters humbly declined to unite as one. The former president (at that time) ordered them to join but became the KTA that was side by side with ITF. In the late 1960s, Choi resigned and allowed a new leader to KTA flow in. That leader evolved KTA into WTF. Both ITF and WTF want to share Tae Kwon Do but the WTF side wanted to be in Seoul/ Korea. KTA was reborn along with ATA and they normally affiliate with ITF a little more than WTF. WTF was more affiliated with other sports federations and Amatuer Olympic events.

In that case all martial arts come from India in the form of Kalaripayattu. General Choi has never trained in White Crane Kung fu or Kalari, but has trained in Karate. I'm not going to lie Karate has its influence from White Crane Kung Fu, but martial arts are meant to evolve and that's why there is modernize MMA and other combative martial arts. My Master is President Choi Jung Hwa he is the founders only son, this is why I know these facts 1st handed from training from hi Dojang. My problem here is that there was no mention of my master father and its sad that there are people in this world that's willing to distort history because it doesn't suit there political agenda. Taekwondo (t’aegwondo, kicking and punching way/art) is a Korean martial art and combative sport distinguished by kicks, hand strikes, and arm blocks. Its sanctioned history claims that taekwondo is 2,000 years old, that it is descended from ancient hwarang warriors, and that it has been significantly influenced by a traditional Korean kicking game called taekyon. However, the documented history of taekwondo is quite different. By focusing solely on what can be documented, the following essay links the origins of taekwondo to 20th century Shotokan, Shudokan, and Shito-ryu karate, and shows how the revised history was developed to support South Korean nationalism.

As far as i was aware Song Duk Ki had no influence in post second world war Taekwondo at all. General Choi Hong Hi had many contemporaries but only took advice from a select few, Rhee Ki Ha, Jhoon Rhee etc and these few were tasked with spreading the word about taekwondo (something the South Korean governement were dead set against), this is the reason General Choi defected to North Korea and developed WTF taekwondo. The South Korean govenment then realised thier mistake and allowed the development of ITF Taekwondo in other countries, and i am not sure but i think General Choi was allowed back into South Korea at this point. Taekwondo has a pretty chequered history.

I'm sure a ton of people "showed" Lee a ton of stuff, but he was most influenced by two things: Kungfu and Savate. He's got a great appreciation for Kali, Boxing, Wrestling, and a host of other arts, but he was most influenced by those two. We can talk all about what TKD kicks are and what they aren't, but I guarantee you that Kungfu has a front, side, hook, jump, and turning kicks. So, unless Bruce Lee is doing some jumping double kicks or axe kicks, I suggest you stop the propaganda hype train for connecting Bruce to TKD. It's not working.

nomamao could tell us who influenced Bruce's kicks in Kali and Savate? why his kicks in the movies are same as TKD kicks? I could name a couple of TKD kicks in the movies: sliding side kick, axe kick.

A L Lopez karate is not an originated from japan... it was from okinawa, former rykyu kingdom. rykyu was an independent state but japan invaded them and merged in 1897. There is a theory that the Ryukyu Kingdom was a kingdom founded by insurgents who resisted during the Mongol invasion of Goryeo, and there is some evidence to support this. and Goryeo kingdom has its own martarial art that uses kicking techniques. However, it is not yet recognized as an orthodoxy, so please refer to it. So I hope that karate escapes from the fantasy that it is a unique Japanese martial art.
