What is Sufism?

www.spiritualexcellence.com/w...
In this video, I explain what Sufism is and dispel some of the misconceptions surrounding this fundamental aspect of Islam.
Sufism, which is also known as Tazkiyyah, is quite simply the spiritual dimension of Islam, and it's goal and aim is the purification of the self so that nothing but spiritual excellence remains. This state and station of spiritual excellence is known as Maqam al-Ihsan.
Sufi knowledge and training is based upon a system known as Tariqa, which literally means the Path or the Way, and necessitates a living lineage that can be traced directly back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in an unbroken chain of transmission.

I discovered sufism two years ago from a novel on Rumi (I was 17 back then). It really made me discover a very soft aspect of Islam i've never learned it existed because we are sadly so absorbed by the form. I got really curious about it, looked into it and i've come to the conclusion that it's not an aspect of islam, that it's real Islam and prophet Muhammed PBUH was the first Sufi. Your channel is incredible, it makes us connect us on a deeper level to Almighty Allah. May Allah bless you, keep it up brother Ihsan, indeed your name suits you perfectly.🤩

"religion without spirituality can become a antithesis to its purpose" you are so damn right there. I've come to realise that many of the major religions today are just blind and materialistic, they never try to actually contact the greater powers on the spiritual level. I believe by spiritually connecting ourselves to the greater powers, we can believe in them more, they will feel more real to us, it will make religion feel so much more essential and rewarding. I'm liking sufism.

Somali Boqolkiiba No! Gnostic; Gnosis is the conscious and experiential knowledge. Some profess the experience of God. Sufism is merely the shell of Islam but ANYONE can be a Sufi b/c as he mentions in the beginning of the video. "Sufism is the inner/outter essence of spirituality in religion." Which I STRONGLY agree with b/c during my studies, I also found out that Sufism is in the Hindu Vedas as well as the early Sufis had contact with Christian Gnostics. Sufis also have origins in Buddhism; which is where they got they're meditation, rosaries and etc from. Lastly, the early Christians wore wool garbs, in which the word Suf = wool. We all know Islam came after Christianity. Nonetheless, Jesus and Mohammad were both Sufis, although there isn't a definite origin of Sufism.

+H Assendelft While a "Muslim" follows the Koran, and prayers the mechanical prayer 5 times a day, and hopes one day Allah will grant him paradise, with 72vergins rivers of wine and young boys, they even believe an eye for an eye, Jihad, Sharia law, Stonnong, chopping of hands, etc. The Suffis are totally opposite, they don't follow the Koran, they are Free Spirit, mystics, Totally spiritual, they are totally Truth Seekers,if you read the poems of Rumi you will not find anything about Mohammad or Allah, it's all about Love devotion and Beloved. In fact just recently in Egypt a Suffi Temple was blown up to the heavens by Muslims.

i started realising about the formality and moralisation in Islam a few weeks ago. and I was kind of upset about it because of the way muslims are living now and the way some of them thinks. I've always been interested in spirituality and without realising I started to learn some stuff about enlightment and some other concepts. I thought it might be Buddhism but I still learn about it because I really like to focus on spirituality. Thankfully I found out about sufism omg. I'm so glad. I thought I'm the only one realising about how the Islam is now. It turns out some people realize about it long ago. I'm so happy. Thank you for the video

Peace and Blessings. I was raised by an American Muslim family in California. I started meditating and lucid dreaming when I was 7 years old. My brothers noticed when I was 13 and they became very angry, my elders too. I was ordered to stop meditating and to never tell anyone about my dreams. What they were saying opposed what I felt blooming in my heart and the light starting to dawn over my eyes. I disobeyed and continued, hiding my practice. I stopped attending the Masjid in my teens and began to deeply engage in my own unfolding practice. Now I'm 35 years old. I'm so happy and meditate daily, every morning and immediately afterwards I go through a series of stretches and postures. At a point during that, I often have an experience that I don't have words for. I don't currently identify as Muslim because I did not take the declaration of faith in the masjid. However, I feel closer to the source of us all than I did before I stopped going to the Masjid. My eldest brother and my uncle are worried about my soul, but I do not feel fear about it. Brother Ishan, please tell me; do you think it is required for me to attend the Masjid and practice like they do?

Brother, declaration of faith is not for others it is for you. Go to the Masjid not for others but for your creator-the one who gave you life. To be human is to error. To be God is to be error free. Don’t judge Islam based on what certain humans say. Study the Quran and the life of the prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and then ask sincere Dua to the creator to guide you internally. Only ask God for guidance as it is only God that truest guides and is the best of friends. In the Quran it says God is closer to you than your jugular. Even though we don’t hear God, God hears and know us better than ourselves. We have to make sincere Dua InshAllah. God bless!

(Myself Baptist Christian) Thank you so much Sir for enriching my knowledge. it was worth spending 37:05 minutes here. in fact, not only Sufism but every religion has the same message. we, the humans are the sinners since inception and we still struggles with two dimension of life- physical and spiritual. In Christianity too, Protestantism emerged because of the extreme incorporation of forms and law into the religion that eventually tended to devalue the inner essence of religion. God Bless You.

Ihsan Alexander, I'm really glad that you're making this video. I am really bothered by people's ignorance of Tassawwuf because it's just damaging in several different ways. It has gone so far at times that I've refused to even use the word Sufi out of shame, of associating myself with strange stereotypes. When I try to advise people, my first go to method is unfortunately to avoid using the word Sufi. This really needs to be talked about especially in regards to Westerners. Why Westerners? Because a lot of them will rather take there information from wrong sources (speculative orientalists, new-agers, Muslims who don't observe Shari'ah) and forward it. A video which often tops the list on KZread search result is the "top 10 facts about Sufism" by FTD reports. And it's full of misinformation, some of which is even blasphemous in the view of tawhid.

Great explanation of Sufism. I am not a Sufi, but have always been interested in knowing more. When I became a Muslim the thing that people said to me was to stay away from Sufism because of that "warning" I knew I needed to learn more about it. Since then I decided to research for myself it has now been years since I first read about Sufism and it has helped me tremendously. I realized that it was not a path that one should fear, but that it was actually closer to me than any other form of Islam in many ways because my connection to Allah is much more than religion which allow me to be tolerant of others as I recognize the benefit of seeking to have piety and a spiritually healthy heart. I no longer claim to be Sunni, Shia etc. I am a Muslim.

business0412 you are so right so much division! The sad thing is many of our brothers and sisters don't see that this division is the major issue. It is causing intolerance and stopping us from truly worshipping Allah. There are so many wonderful jewels that Islam has to offer that could begin the healing of nations, but it starts with the healing of the minds and hearts of we who call ourselves Muslims. I pray Allah ta ala bless our ummah.

I come from Kashmir Pakistan where majority of population identify with its way of life and this is the only Islam we have ever known. We never knew there were many sects or that some people don't believe in tasawwuf/sufi way of life. Islam is one. And the original path of Islam is the path of sufiya Allah. But still I consider all muslims one and identify myself only as a Muslim because that's what Allah asked us to do.

I have been growing spiritually for a while and as I was experiencing more inner peace and freedom of ego, I began to feel that the form of Islam is ego based. I was beginning to feel that spirituality alone is enough. But you you say we need the form and spirituality alone is not enough. That is something I need to understand more.

I'm a Quaker, and it's incredibly moving to me how so much of this resonates with my own experiences within my own faith, and with the voices of mystics from so many other diverse faiths; particularly the issues of external forms vs internal spirituality. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Has God given any authority (sultan) to any human being to take responsibility on God's behalf to authenticate manmade stories, myths and gossip to add in HIS Deen? Can you find any verse in the Quran that states clearly that those six Persian men received God's mandate or permission and authority to add a voluminous library of books, containing stories and myths in the name of HIS Prophet? Did the Prophet (AS) himself approve, authorise and certify those stories and myths in those Persian sia-sittah books as authentic? Does “Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger” means to associate Persian sia-sittah hadith books with the Book of God? Who told you this? Is it God or men? Provide your evidence according to Quran 2:111 and 37:154-157

i am hindu my guru was a sufi. He was a saint. Today only because of him i can worship in a mosque and temple alike i mean anywhere. He showed me true religion and a perception of god and he was really magical just like saints and seers in our texts. He didn't eat meat . He was a strict celibate . He didn't even looked towards women. And called all women mother. He used to eat one time a day only and very little. And all day devotion singing and music. It was all really divine. And he used to cry while singing praises of god and he lived in a jungle. But local people made a full place for him and local administrator gave the whole area in name of him. He was really a mystic. And had superpowers. Hindus called him siddha and Muslims Fakeer. Truly a man of God .

Sufism is what Islam is about love and peace, that's why all the auliyas and our beloved prophet spread Islam all over world today but for some wrong misunderstanding people are being misguided now.If you read the history of India and Islam then you can find hazrath khwaja moin uddin Chisti (a Sufi). Today in India there is more then 170 million Muslims.Look at the history of Bangladesh 160 million Muslims today in the the teaching of a great Sufi hazrath shajallal.Pakistan is also a country educated by great Sufis population of 180 million Muslims. This 3 countries have half of the worlds Muslim population from the teaching of great Sufis by yet most of them forgotten the Sufis.Without these Sufis there would have been no expansion Islam but today we dont follow there Wisdom. Sufism is the path to the divine love and destiny.

I´m a European, a former philosophy student, and a life-long seeker of thruth. During the last years I increasingly became fascinated by what is broadly being called spirituality. I took closer looks at daoism, (zen-)buddhism, advaita and western spiritual masters like meister Eckhart. This video sums up very well what is, in my opinion too, the heart of religion and it is this heart that, ´rizomatically´, binds all spirituality as, what I like to call, true wisdom. So, when Ihsan Alexander speaks of ´minimalism´, true piety, the middle way as the path to avoid extremes, the purification of the self which equates the annihilation of the ego, he not only speaks of sufism, but also of madhymaka buddhism (madhymaka meaning ´the middle way´), Zhuang Zi´s ´xin zhai´ (the ´fasting of the heart´) and meister Eckhart´s ´ledic gemüete´ (the empty mind, soul). In one word: spirituality is non-duality. Inevitably, religion, as the term is being used here as the outer manifestation, the ´superficial structure´, the ´form-alisation´ of the inner experience, will corrupt its own origin whenever it looses the connection with this experience. Which it will loose inevitably; that is just the way things go. Which is causing the pain, the damage, the suffering in the world we are all wittnessing right now. Religions as such will never agree with one another, because they can´t, because their very identity, their very existence depends on discriminating/identifying outer ways to what is being called salvation. Any religion that remembers its origin, will be tolerant towards others, and we all, standing in the ´Abrahamic traditions´ should be well aware of the fact that our traditions are the least tolerant in the world. Different manifestations of spirituality will never disagree with one another, simply because in its essence it is always the manifestation of the same experience. True understanding, wisdom is finding out what is at the heart of life, what is the essence of our nature. True understanding will find, inevitably, ways to express itself, to the benefit of all. A good life and wisdom to you all.

The essence of Islam is linked to God. God in Islam does not materialize and sits in a chair and governs the world. God is in Islam not as in Judaism as a person. Not as in Christianity is embodied in the three universes. God is not the unity of nature as in Spinoza, Buddhism and Hinduism. As Hegel said. It is not the unstructured Taoism, as in Tao Ticheng's book You have to cleanse your mind of all this. The phrases here are profound and you should be careful of them because they are unconscious and too big to be described God exists before existence. God is an Azali being any existence that does not need time or place. The universe came 14 billion years ago. And time and place appeared after the Big Bang. The assets behave in the dimensions .. the tenth and the ninth ... and we are in the third dimension and the shadow exists in the second dimension. And there is one dimension and existence before time and place. God exists and acts in the distance God is the duty of existence. The existence exists and needs it at every moment and it does not need the creature The universe can not create itself and is so-called proof of impossibility of sequencing Any action and movement needs an actor and the actor needs an actor in an endless sequence Give you an example. Someone who needs $ 10 asks someone else to give him $ 10 and that person asks someone else to give him $ 10 and so the chain goes on indefinitely. Everyone asks the other forever. The first person will not get the money. In the universe also needs a reason and this reason needs a reason. This same reason needs a reason. In a circle without end. There will not be. The reasons come in two ways. The form of an open chain and circular shape. The person will not get money except from outside the two forms. The universe comes only from outside the two forms. The science proves that the non-eternal material is not updated God is alive and not a principle and he is the creator of the principles including the principle of Tao. It can be said that Tao is the way God behaves in the universe and not God Himself. God is not in his creation. God is not outside the universe as a cosmic king. God exists above time and dimensions. Because God does not recognize the eyes and bigger than that is limited by the mind and bigger than the description of the tongue will act the heart of the Muslim and the true believer in the love of God. God is the absolute good is who created you and respects the creatures that he created. The Messenger of God said Muslims from the ladder of people from his hand and tongue The Holy Quran said The Table 27 Recite to them the truth of the story of the two sons of Adam. Behold! they each presented a sacrifice (to Allah): It was accepted from one, but not from the other. Said the latter: "Be sure I will slay thee." "Surely," said the former, "Allah doth accept of the sacrifice of those who are righteous. 28 "If thou dost stretch thy hand against me, to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee: for I do fear Allah, the cherisher of the worlds. 29 "For me, I intend to let thee draw on thyself my sin as well as thine, for thou wilt be among the companions of the fire, and that is the reward of those who do wrong." 30 The (selfish) soul of the other led him to the murder of his brother: he murdered him, and became (himself) one of the lost ones. 31 Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his brother. "Woe is me!" said he; "Was I not even able to be as this raven, and to hide the shame of my brother?" then he became full of regrets- 32 On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. The Poets 84 "Grant me honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations); 85 "Make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss; 86 "Forgive my father, for that he is among those astray; 87 "And let me not be in disgrace on the Day when (men) will be raised up;- 88 "The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, 89 "But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart; Luqman 16 "O my son!" (said Luqman), "If there be (but) the weight of a mustard-seed and it were (hidden) in a rock, or (anywhere) in the heavens or on earth, Allah will bring it forth: for Allah understands the finest mysteries, (and) is well-acquainted (with them). 17 "O my son! establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and forbid what is wrong: and bear with patient constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs. 18 "And swell not thy cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loveth not any arrogant boaster. 19 "And be moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass. " The Believers 1 The believers must (eventually) win through,- 2 Those who humble themselves in their prayers; 3 Who avoid vain talk; 4 Who are active in deeds of charity; 5 Who abstain from sex, 6 Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame, 7 But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;- 8 Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants; 9 And who (strictly) guard their prayers;- 10 These will be the heirs, 11 Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever) .There are dozens of directories you need to write and not to comment And let me be a bad Englishman. I rely on an interpreter and there are deep words that can not be read well There are Muslims by name only and religion does not know its deep principles I wish peace to all of God's creation

The other Divine teaching also mention: "The Purpose of the one true God, exalted be His glory, in revealing Himself unto men is to lay bare those gems that lie hidden within the mine of their true and inmost selves. That the divers communions of the earth, and the manifold systems of religious belief, should never be allowed to foster the feelings of animosity among men, is, in this Day, of the essence of the Faith of God and His Religion. These principles and laws, these firmly-established and mighty systems, have proceeded from one Source, and are the rays of one Light. That they differ one from another is to be attributed to the varying requirements of the ages in which they were promulgated."
