What is SPEEDFLYING? An extreme sport you've probably never heard of - The Descensionists

Спорт

Come with us on an exciting, albeit brief, adventure in the fringe and dangerous world of big mountain proximity speedflying.
From New Zealand and based in Colorado; we follow the story of extreme sports enthusiast Scotty Dobbo as he finds the work-life balance it takes to pursue his passions combining mountaineering and flying.
The Descensionists introduces the niche sport of speedflying to a mass audience while showcasing the opportunities it can open in the the upper boundaries of the human flight experience.

Thanks for the kind words! We definitely have some more stories to share in the future that don't involve accidents 😅. In fact this film was never meant to be about an accident but unfortunately a mistake was made and it just made sense to share it. 🙌

I've done some thrilling, physically challenging and dangerous stuff in my 65 years, performance motorcycles, snow mobiles, ice skating on very thin ice, skiing, roller blades, wind surfing, triathlons, bodybuilding, some rock climbing, mountain bikes, just to name a few. But this is on another level. I currently reside in northeast Georgia and I do some hiking, paddle board and kayak, catamaran sailing and open water swimming. The riskiest thing I do now is bike riding up and down these local mountain roads. The up is the workout. The down is the thrill. I've always wanted to try hang gliding or paragliding but I'll leave the proximity stuff to the younger more experienced flyers...What these guys are doing reminds me of wing suit flying. Super cool video.

I remember talking with other sport riders above San Diego and the wise one's knew there was a level of riding that you needed to stop at and be satisfied with. I enjoyed the hell out of it for about eighteen months without a close call and had reached a comfortable place with my riding. I was rewarded with a lasting boat load of good memories.

For sure truth to this comment. I've come to realise my comfort zone now and have much better self-mitigation measures in place after this accident. I wish it didn't take getting this messed up to learn the lesson but sharing it here is a way to share my free lesson to others in the sport. 🫶

In aviation, they say there are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots. That one dude in the video said he’d prefer to be gone by 50, well press on then, mate! No shame in that. As the late great George Carlin said “Don’t just pass away. One should seize the moment of their death to teach and entertain.” 😂 Very cool video. Very entertaining. Please don’t die. Cheers.

Exactly! Colorado isn't just about the ski resorts. People move here and realize quickly how good the summer is. I think the saying goes "Come for the winter, stay for the summer". 😀

Very nice video production. Speed gliding is right on par with BASE jumping and wing suite flying, all with there inherent dangers and if I was much younger I’d be doing it. At my age the hike up would be risky enough!

def my fave girl ever on BD. Some of the others are horrible, some of the others are ok, but Aesha really seems nice. I think she's gonna have to get out of yachting soon though because being a chief stew for more than a couple seasons really does change people.

Watching some of these paragliding videos, it brings to mind a saying we passed around in my days as a hang glider pilot. Same applies to the wing suit guys. There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old bold pilots.

Hence why we shared this story of his accident. We wanted it to be clear the risks of complacent decision making and hopefully be an accurate representation of "getting lucky".

Some used to claim that a good landing was any landing that you could walk away from. Never understood that. To me, a good landing was one where you didn't hurt yourself or your glider. I spent a lot of time on the training hill learning to take off and land....

The problem is when you break many bones. You will carry those for the rest of your life and they weigh a lot more when you get older. I had a skydiving accident (broken legs, sacrum in 5 pieces etc.) and 25 surgeries later I’m still here. But boy I so wish I didn’t have that accident. It was a hook turn upon landing when a concrete post decided to get in the way.

100% think that everyone who's had any kind of accident in these sports agrees with this. We've seen some people share that injuries are "badges of honor" but we don't necessarily think along this train of thought. Hopefully seeing the raw accident footage here will be a reminder to others in the sport.

Not only do I know about it, I came up with the idea when I was working as a ski patroller, and dreamed of skiing down the mountain with a base chute as a paraglider. Little did I know that at the exact same time there were people who actually started doing that in Europe instead of just dreaming about it.
