What is SNMP?

Ғылым және технология

The simple network management protocol is used to poll our devices to find out information on them. It's what we use to monitor our IT stuff.

Calling snmp a secret protocol is kind of wild

Be careful with snmp walk, you can overload the monitored device, if you choose the wrong snmp id. I crashed a very big vpn infrastructure with it. 😂

Unless you choose SNMP version 3. But then setting up security becomes a PITA, so many people revert to using SNMP version 2

The S in SNMP is a misnomer. MIB management, permissions, and v3 (encryption) are somewhat complex.

Agree. Try locating the documentation of the OID (Object IDentifier) for a device, and then read through it. Then install and use SNMPD to view portions of the SNMP information from your device. And then you’ll realize that to make any sense of it, you really need an SNMP platform that pulls the information and presents it in a user friendly format. So yes, the ‘S’ should really mean ‘Stodgy’

SNMP in my companies RMM sucks. I thought it was a shitty protocol. I didn’t know it was so useful in different applications. The snmp I am used to doesn’t monitor hardware resources, thanks for this information.

  • @JohnnyBeGoodz

@@pleasantvegetable Even with SNMPv2, you can at least set a unique “Read Community” passphrase. To the OP, that’s the neat and tricky thing about Cybersec… It’s a constant battle between locking down a network and allowing it to flow without disrupting important business structures. Nothing is 100% secure or sure of security. Putting up appropriate blockades and mitigating risk is all one can do. You could also use WMI which follow windows creds, but it leads to the same point you’re making. Hackers will not stop, that’s a fact, but we can’t not implement a monitoring solution for critical infrastructure just because there’s a possibility of compromise. If that was the case across the board, security wouldn’t exist.

@@theminester7897 hii , Unfortunately, the developments in your country are not the same as in our country and Unifi does not take Turkey very seriously. People only need devices to spread wifi, which creates a more suitable product expectation for people. Example; Reyee . For this reason, we have to put 5 or 6 APs in a house, and this is costly because the unit price is expensive. Because in our country it is 32 times the US dollar. and 20% tax is added to it, I am very happy to learn about Zabbix from you, I have not had the opportunity to use it yet, I also learned Hostfiy today.

@chuck. / anyone. I have a question sir. I am a sysadmin with 4 years of experience in an array of areas. I want to specialize my career more and pursue Linux as I have had a passion for it since college. I use Linux on my personal machines and I’ve had some hands in Linux stuff at my current job, however, it has been minimal. I’m looking to take my next step and am troubled on which certifications to get along with Linux+. I’m studying for ccna as all network engineers I’ve talked to personally have recommended this. I’m looking for the best cert in 2024 that would compliment my resume. Any response or recommendations from anyone is appreciated.
