What is Shavuot? Orthodox Jewish Holidays | Orthodox Jewish Mom (Jar of Fireflies)

Let's talk about Shavuot / Shavuos! In this video I will tell you all about the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. We will talk about why we celebrate this day, what it commemorates, and how we celebrate it, as well as why we have the customs we do on this day of Shavous / Shavuot.
Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

    I was born on Shavuot too! Shavuot in some places takes place in the middle of the rose harvest for rose water so I like to make potpourri, candied rose petals, rose water cookies, and bath products for it.

    ❤❤❤ Shavuos!! One of the many facets of Judaism that keep me connected is the continuity. We serve Hashem the same way today as our ancestors have been for over 3,000 years! I love how the traditions are passed from parent to child. The fact that we, the Jews of today, were there over 3,000 years ago never ceases to amaze me. My family's tradition was to eat dairy for all of Shavuos and so I continue that with my daughters and my grandchildren. We do cheese blintzes, fettuccine alfredo (my own homemade) and, of course, ice cream in the afternoons. We only do cheesecake if I can get it from a kosher bakery (we don't have one) I'm from NY and readily admit that I am a bit of a food snob 😉. Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!

    Shavuot is a very special family holiday day in my family. For as long as I can remember we go as a family to a beautiful kibbutz in the North, kibbutz Lavi, and celebrate it together there. When I was a child it was my grand parents my parents my aunt and uncle and cousins. We were about 15 people then.... Now we r over 70! And although I miss my grandparents a lot because they past away many years ago. Their spirit is here with us, there children grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren!! This year its even more of a bonus as we couldn't get together last year because of covid and we all need a bit of a break from the craziness from the rockets coming over on avrege every 2.5 minutes from gaza....

    Cheesecake for breakfast is my kind of holiday.:) So interesting about David being born and dying on Shavuot. And the Saw you At Sinai made me laugh out loud. Love it. I have a question for you...were your ears ever pierced? Just noticed you do not wear earrings and wondered if that was against Orthodox teaching. I know most young girls these days get their ears pierced. My mother did not allow it as she said in her time only "loose" girls had pierced ears.lol I waited until I was 18, in nursing school and took the Marta to Richs in Atlanta and had mine pierced.

  • @mcomeslast

    @@nicolepelletier9081 haha! No. For that I eat what is required for seders and that’s it. I used to just go off keto for Pesach but this year it made me sick. So non gebrochts from here on out. It’s also difficult to find a lot of keto items (like for baking) that is kosher for Pesach. So my Pesach plan next year is eat the minimum matzah and spend the rest of the week just eating very low carb to make up for it. The rest of the Yom Tovim I can still make special food.

    Question: it’s okay to have both dairy and meat on the same day, just not during the same meal or same dish? Is there a specific period of time that needs to pass between eating dairy and eating meat?

  • @jaroffireflies

    @jaroffireflies

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question! We can’t have them together at the same meal. After eating meat I wait 6 hours to eat dairy. After I eat dairy I just need to have a drink and a bite of something not meat or dairy before eating meat. The wait time after eating meat can vary but 6 hours seems to be the most common.

    Just curious...could you point out in the Torah Scriptures where it mentions this commemoration of Shavuot representing the Torah being given to the people? Does the Scripture passage you are presenting here distinctly mention 50 days after this, that HE will give the Torah? How are you coming to this conclusion? Just wanting a witness of Scripture here & actually two witnesses of Scripture would be even better. I would like to present Shavuot to others, but would like some Scriptural backing as to what you are saying it commemorates. Shalom....todah & barukah to you...

Got a question for you for your Q&A: Have you thought of changing the style of your schikel or the colour and if so what style and/or colours would you consider? What style of scarf to you prefer for your day to day head covering and do you wear bright colours when not vlogging?
