This is one of the best videos I have seen in a long time because its EXACTLY what the people at my archery club told me when I was a new archer. Lucky im stubborn and ignored them they wouldn't even let you shoot without a knocking point and when i said i wanted to shoot like Lars Anderson they said he was a trick archer and edited his videos. I have learned to ignore people with closed minds and not to bother trying to argue the point. In my opinion they push alot of people who would like to do archery out of it, because they only believe in Olympic style...which isn't for everyone. Wonder how many others shoot traditional/instinctive because of Lars and Armin...i am one for sure but I bet its thousands.

@@geomystery8343 Me too, I just started recently after being blown away by what Lars showed it was possible to do with a bow earlier this year. I have zero interest in shooting high-tech equipment with various accessories at a stationary target all day long. While I appreciate the engineering behind a compound bow (it's very cool!) it doesn't make any sense for me personally - if I wanted a high-tech solution I'd likely just go for a crossbow instead (compound of course, and with a magazine), or perhaps Jörg Sprave's Fenris. What draws me to traditional archery is the rawness of it. I'm planning on making my own wooden arrows once I've achieved some level of consistency.

Armin. I cannot agree more on what You and Lars are telling. Even more, i think it's most important message to all archers whatsoever. Passion should keep people together, not divide them. I'm doing LARP archery (foam-head arrows), also aerial targets, running archery and almost no stationary target shooting, because archery is supossed to be relax and fun and these "disciplines" is what gives me positive kick. I'm really really grateful for this video, and for all inspiration and knowledge from other. Keep it coming!

I loved seeing Lars shooting through the keyhole. it never gets old. For many years I suggested to many modern archers (friends and clubmates) that ancient war archers had amazing totally unbelievable accuracy by today's standards - now I just point to Lars and say this is one guy's hobby and look how accurate he is. Now Imagine if you were an elite ancient archer. You do nothing else but archery and horseback riding ... How proficient do you think you would be, after surviving numerous battles, how acurate could you be with; either side of the bow, no arrow rest and no fixed draw length or point (essential in many ways on horseback) ... I'm not able to "keyhole" yet but I can nail a tennis ball every time at up to 20' and Im practicing on ping pong balls and getting reliably acurate out to 12 yards and building that up. I dont have that level of acuracy from horseback but that will come with time.

You may be correct about the skills of ancient archers, but Lars Andersen shooting through a keyhole is not the example I'd cite. That video is a fake, with everything right of the door's edge being one video and everything left being another. This video was done as a "response" to a archery video posted by the "dude perfect" channel, which are entirely faked. So, it could be Mr. Andersen was attempting to be ironic.

In medieval Europe, the French hated British archers so much that they cut off their fingers. To this day holding up your archery fingers in Britain is an insult because it implies that they haven't caught you yet, you are still out there sniping them and they can't do anything about it.

Okay @Waltham1892 - Really? Why would you find fakery in an actually very humble and talented guy's achievement? @musikSkool - Really? This hasn't been debunked enough times that people still post it? (From memory this is attributed to Black Douglas of Scotland while the French had no reason (generalising here) to do anything but kill the common English archer). @Twm Clark - Yep, clearly not fake but try not to presume of what Lars is thinking. If you watch his videos and listen to what he says, he's only ever challenged himself to see what's possible with a lower weight (but still lethal) bow. Guys, maybe I've just been baited, but seriously, there's better ways to spend minutes than propagating stuff like this. Rant over.

@@carabas5523 I'm not presuming anything. The majority of his videos are speculating on how archery was done in the past and his reasoning usually comes down to speed or accuracy. HOLD UP YALL, I paused the video just to comment real quick, a couple years ago Mr Armin took me to school on REAL ARCHERY. Because I came to him asking questions and I said that I want to do real Archery😂😂😂😂 And this was one of the first life lessons that Mr. Armin has taught me. What’s cool about learning from master Armin is that a lot of the stuff you learn in Archery from him, you can actually translate it to other parts of your life. For me this was my first lesson because I thought since that I was shooting slavic release that I was shooting REAL ARCHERY 🏹 😂 😂😂 And Mr. Armin schooled me really quick from ever using that term. I will never forget that conversation because I learned so much from the teaching and I’ve used that teaching in other parts of my life and my life has been a lot better and I wanna thank you armin for your teachings. (Btw I paused the video at your new logo, I love it, Asiatic Archery by Armin)

I'm glad to know that you and Lars Anderson are actually friends. I'm actually subscribed to both of your KZread Channels but I didn't know you guys were friends. I only shot compound bows for many years until I found you and Lars on KZread; which inspired me to buy a Grozer Csaba Hungarian Bio-Composite bow. So nice. In my personal opinion it's way more fun with the Hun-Bow. I get satisfaction and feelings of accomplishment from shooting my Grozer bow compared to my compound bow. Even though my compound bow shoots more accurate for me, faster, harder hitting and more consistent, it's not as fun as the joy of my Hun-Bow. It was so hard to learn thumb release... I'm still today trying to master it and it's been a while. In Australia Queensland, none of the archery clubs know about thumb release or how to teach it .

Came back to the hobby now a million years later with a simple flatbow-longbow-twinbow and am so pshyched just playing around with it. Thumb, release, glove, tab, no tab, arrow left side of riser, right side of riser, next arrows still in the draw hand etc.. The playfulness of it really brought the love back for it!

At the club, I shoot alongside two 9 year old girls. Their bows are bigger than them, they struggle when stringing because they are not tall enough, they can't use a quiver because it rubs on the floor as they walk. But they are at the same time dead serious about their shooting and absolutely enthousiastic when they hit the gold at fifteen yards. Real archery, then, I guess.

The oldest now shoots a bare youth compound bow. Their aim is getting better, they’re building up their understanding and muscle memory, they have confidence handling a bow. All through soft archery. I’m sure one day we’ll progress when they’re ready to progress. The right archery is the archery you have access to and which you can do safely. Keep up the good work.

From my perspective, took me at least 5 years to find my own archery technique (thanks to your videos among others, Lars's too) and the proper material to practice it. Olympic/precision shooting for 3 month, then hunting archery/instinctive for 2 years, then I bought my bow (Jackal Archery Assyrian, a beast^^) and have been practicing slavic release for 6 months. Now I have been practicing Thumb release, using 2 different quiver while shooting (it's a choice), using Alibow arrows with Alumni Speed nocks and Archery Tidbits thumb gloves (told you your videos were a great lesson) It is my way of archery, every technique I have been practicing was full of surprises and lessons to learn. At the end the proper way of archery is the one that feats you, it is not even the way of perfection because those who practice for fun are not in this mindset.

I just started archery again with a Grozer Scythian bow and at my local range, people are interested in how the bow is (organic components instead of plastic), how the archery is (no stabilizer, no visor, nothing), how I shoot (right side instead of the left side, my posture not being 90° perpendicular to the target etc etc etc), this is really nice for them to see a different kind of archery without judging anything. A coach asked if it was efficient from a posture perspective, but well, archers 3000 years ago just tried to kill their enemy, not hit a still hay target right ?

So I nocked three arrows on my string, took aim (canted to keep the arrows in place) from about 15 yards, and shot them. To all our surprise, all three arrows landed close to the ten ring. We were all amazed that it could even be done. But it can. And I did. And we all had fun.

Now that I am ready to upgrade because my skill level has increased, along with my discipline, I don’t have any interest in advancing with the compound bow because I personally appreciate the challenges associated with traditional archery. I prefer spot & stalk my quarry vs ambushing from a blind or stand. But that’s me, I’m sure others are as proficient with their method. I appreciate elevating my skills and the shy is the limit with traditional bows, but I love the instant gratification of the compound bow. I respect you guys.

After the first success bow we make arrow. From no feather and not straight to feather and straight. Then we try different method and type of string. We twisted it, add more string and used different knots. At last, my Brother has his favorite long bow and mine is a weird looking thing make from combine 2 from different bows. Next is firing style. We start at same but end up using different style. All of those process let us understand how bow has so many variants. It very fun to discover little by little.

I do however think that Asiatic is harder to master, and that's the challenge that I want! I don't want to blame the bow at any point, I want it to be down to my skill (or lack of skill) as much as possible, because to me that makes archery interesting. That said, the "still got the training wheels on?" joke will never get old 😀 To any gamers reading, this, I want the "Dark Souls" of archery!

Feel the same and have pretty much same attitude with Armin and Lars. This phenomenon applies to all sports, arts, pretty much all fields of human activities. Some folks enjoy the static aspect of handling tools, in this case bow & arrow, laser focused on micro accuracy and forms which often learned by theories and rigid structures. Some other folks enjoy the intuitive way of handling bow and arrow without particular focus but explore in many aspects and more diverse factors (speed, timing, coordination and fluidity of body movement, reaction to other subject or archer and so on). And there are those bitter, unhappy people that are wasting there time and energy on commenting negative remark on what others fancy. It's all matter of what's in there head the thoughts they have manifest. Focusing on what you don't like make you miserable hinders progression, focusing on joy make you happy progress faster. The issue is a lack of self awareness.

The detractors seem to forget that Lars Anderson has been an Archer most of his life, he has researched, shot & taught many styles. I, too, know a few Compound Archers that shoot theirs from the string. Each to their own. As long as people enjoy their Archery & are shooting safely, it's all good. Recently, a friend described Snowboarding Archery. Talk about a tourism ploy, 'Come back in spring to collect your arrows'. 😂

Real archery is the kind that makes you feel good while you do it, the kind that you enjoy most. Therefore it's different for each practitioner, making it relative and a matter of perspective.

So many positive feedbacks, so I don´t want to. :D Real archery is to build a own bow and shoot it precise like a compound. Without nock, arrowrest and targetingsystem. Now I train every day since 1 1/2 years and it work well. I shoud try out what will happen, when I shoot a bow with easy mode.

New to archery, started a month ago with a ILF recurve barebow. I don't aim, more of instinctive or intuitive they said. When I try to aim using arrow heads, like split visioning or gap, I feel confused. I shot by feeling. I enjoy it, sometimes I have a good grouping sometimes not. Sometimes I Hit the bullseye 3x consecutively. I recently bought a compound and I find it frustrating because of complications. But I enjoy the power and let off. Im planning to buy turkish bow next, I love its simplicity.

To me archery is a way to improve myself through the tools called bow and arrow, and I read and watch a lot of articles and videos teach people about archery and trying to tell people which is the proper or right way to do archery before I really start my journey on archery, now I feel archery is more like finding or say knowing myself better through finding out what technique works for me and what technique I not able to use, and the more I shoot the more I find my inner peace and the more inner peace I'm the shots naturally become better itself without me to really trying to make the good shots.

I believe that right or wrong archery is on purpose. It is right if you're enjoying archery and strive on getting better with your shots by learning what you're doing wrong and correcting the errors. In a sense focusing on self-reflection is a good purpose of archery. Wrong archery, I think, is the opposite where there is no self-reflection and just shooting the arrows for the heck of it and possibly injuring yourself. The key importance in archery I believe is to judge oneself before judging others. Respect is the most important thing on archery. Starting from self, the equipment, the peers, and the nature.

As long as you can replicate accurately the result will be accurate. The only wrong way I can see is technique that risks damage to your body, equipment or others. Knowledge of archery enables you to learn from the experience of fellow archers right back through history and understand the physics / zen involved. I just find it all fascinating 🤷🏻‍♂️. Awesome as always 🙏

This question always make me think of the paralympian Matt Stutzman. Would someone say he's not a real archer or doing real archery because he has no arms? To me the bow and arrow is an extension of one's own body, express yourself however you wish and have fun doing it is the most important thing.

The only thing I think is important is using the right draw weight for how you shoot. I think there is a problem with a lot of archery equipment being made for 50pounds at 28, then made to be lower poundage while keeping the frame size and arrows/vanes size the same. It's a bit of a sore point to me.

Good morning! Finally a new Friday short ^^ This one's topic was a really good choice, especially with Lars. I think we got sensible and reasonable answers for the question. As always, it's not the equipment or the shooting style what matters, basically archery is about hitting the target (if i want to simplify it). There can be several ways to achieve that goal, and none is better then the other - it depends on the person, on the archer. Ofc we can add some layers to Archery itself, some prefer do deeper into technical details (equipment or technic wise), some use Archery as a spiritual path, etc. these are persona preferences - n.o.n.e. is better then the other. Period.

I think it is OK to draw with the thumb on a lighter bow. But with a 50 pound bow like mine, I can really feel the strain on the tendons when trying to draw with the thumb. It doesn't feel safe. So I must use a slower technique, like Kassai.

I am a musician by trade. And this issue of right and wrong is quite similar in both disciplines of archery and music. As well as many other disciplines. I believe the concepts of "right" and "wrong" can only be applied within 2 categories. And any evaluation outside these categories, is not a good application of these types of words. 1 - Body mechanics. If you practice a repetitive movement in such a way that you hurt yourself. It can be seen as wrong. For example. When people grip the bow but turn it in a way the string slaps the bow arm. It is "wrong". Now, "right" doesn't have to be unique. What is wrong is to hurt yourself in archery. Maybe a solution is using an armguard, another is to grip the bow in a different way. Both are "right" because the "wrong" is the effect of pain in practice. 2 - replication of phenomena. If you say you practice turkish archery, but all your context of practice is Olympic. From drawing, aiming, and philosophy. Then a turkish archery instructor would aay you are wrong, in calling what you do Turkish archery. Vice versa is true. The dificult ia not at the extreme. But where the differences meet. That is when using "right" or "wrong" is inaccurate terms for evaluating technique and performance. If people used more "better" or preferably "more effecient" I believe this would be a different conversation. And a much more enjoyable one at that amongst different approaches to archery. If you want the best score. The fastest way is learning compound. If you want a more relaxing mindset, possibly a more traditional approach is "better" for you. Again, possibly. In the end. "Right" and "wrong" is not accurate to the discussion. Defining objective phenomena with purely subjective language is often inaccurate. That's my two cents. Thanks for reading so far 😄

If you're really shooting a real bow and a real arrow it's real archery, and however you do it I hope you all really enjoy it. That's a nice looking bow Armin, please describe it soon. Actually I would query a bit Lars saying things from nocking points to elaborate sights are to make archery easier (I write as lifelong longbow shooter who has never used a sight). While it is true in a way, because it makes some things easier or more consistent it also raises the standard. Olympic archers would find making the same score as a top longbow target archer easy indeed, but that's irrelevant as they are expected to score much more. It is no easier to shoot as well as a top Olympic archer than it is to shoot as well as a top traditional archer.
