What is Proprioception and Why is it Important? | Molalla Chiropractor

Proprioception is defined as our body's ability to know where it is in space. Training our proprioceptive pathways is a vital part of the rehab process and often left out of more traditional rehab plans.

My propreception system got broke after I suffered a brain injury and whiplash from an accident 7yrs ago. If I stand on one leg and close my eyes, I fall over completely as I don't know where my body is at all. I discovered there was a problem, when I closed my eyes and I didn't know where my hands were to touch them together. Then later, I had tests done, to determine to what extent I had a problem. I still struggle with it all, to this very day.

Seems that physical therapy in stroke recovery could be a subject of Proprioception in learning to use the areas of a persons body as closely as possible to prestroke capacities. Hopefully, if beneficial, could be an incentive to get back to encouraging others to instill the courage to press on towards goals and getting to places that they had never been before. Will have to look into this for my own stroke recovery and therapy possibilities to be stronger and hold that special person in a hug and their hands in mine again.

Proprioception is your body's ability to know where it is in space. Balance is definitely part of proprioception but it also includes other aspects.
