What actually IS Pilates?
What does it consist of?
How do you do Pilates?
Where did Pilates come from?
Why do Pilates?
How does Pilates help you?
You'll get a slightly different response depending on your instructor as people have really varied reasons for doing it, and instructors come for such a huge variety of backgrounds.
In this video I cover off a little bit around each question in as simple terms as possible while running examples of some of the exercises
Please give me a shout if you have any questions or want to know more 👇👇👇

    I have been attending Russ's pilates class for a year and a half and he has helped me so much. He is so much more than an instructor because he genuinely cares and goes above and beyond. His classes provide levels so everyone can join in and I have noticed my confidence grow with my back pain because of his mentoring personalised approach. Plus the classes are good fun: building strength and meeting really lovely people at the same time.

    Have been coming to Russell's Monday class for probably 2 years or more and have found the benefits incredible. My back strength has improved and I able to bend and flex a lot more than I could which, together with yoga has enabled me to avoid putting my back out since starting. His calm approach to the way he teaches is perfect and you never feel awkward or under any pressure. Keep up the good work

    I started with Russ approx 18 months ago after years of back pain and relying on my chiropractor which gets expensive.I am now more flexible and pain free and have less flare ups. I used to always pull my back getting washing from the machine, I now know how to bend safely and not put my back out. I attend weekly f2f session and a session on zoom with Russ, who is friendly and approachable and will advise the best he can when I have a niggle. I stick to a level that suits me on the day but Russ will encourage to challenge myself which is good for me. I have never been able to stick at any form of exercise before but Pilates have and I really enjoy and look forward to the classes.I would recommend anyone to give it a go.

    I found pilates about 6 years ago. The best discovery I've ever done. I have a small scoliosis and used to have back pain. Now is very, very rare to have back pain and my spine is much more flexible. It was the only sport where I have the exactly notion the way my body is moving, which muscles are working. Russ, nice short video. Good explanation and your concepts! I use a similar structure when I coach my students to become certified Pilates teachers under my 600-hour Comprehensive course and run their own businesses. The formula I teach creates transformations over and over again. My clients come to be because they have had enough of overwhelm, not happy working for someone else, not managing to get by and living paycheck to paycheck. I offer them the possibility to gain a new skill in helping others, which not only gives them personal satisfaction but offers them a very healthy and profitable lifestyle. I'm loving what I do and I thank all my teachers for the skills I can pass on to these people! Sending you love and light!!!

It gives you such a sense of pride; your carriage and body movements become so much more confident... People can see it, I have them stop me at the store to ask if I'm a dancer... Very useful thank you, I’m thinking very seriously about this. A question, just out of curiosity, it’s not so important, but from my observations it seems to be mainly women who do Pilates? Is this the case? If so, why is that?

  • @pilatesguy

    @pilatesguy

    Ай бұрын

    The sooner you get started rhe better! You are right. It is predominantly women who practice. This is partly why I found it so difficult to begin myself. I think much has to do with society as a whole. This kind of holistic style of exercise is always attended more by ladies than men. Much of that is down to us guys. And women are more open to group exercise class settings too, across the board. But there are also some factors around the evolution of Pilates after Joseph Pilates began instructing dancers in the New York Ballet. And his protégé was dancer. This all happened before it became so popularised and widespread. Many people who do the various styles of Pilates have any idea of it's origins or that it was initially created by a man.

    I have a question. I have some pretty bad muscle imbalance in my left arm - it's quite weak in about every way. There's some element of lack of mind-body connection, I'm not at all ambidextrous. I can definitely feel muscle/flexibility imbalance in my legs too, also one leg/foot is longer than the other (by a quarter inch maybe). Would pilates be good for me, or would something else be better? My goal is to correct imbalances and gain some baseline strength before moving on to some other things like weight-lifting or a martial art. Thanks.

  • @pilatesguy

    @pilatesguy

    3 ай бұрын

    Pilates can be very good at exposing your imbalances and weaknesses. And we focus on moving as evenly as possible, and moving with control. This takes some mind/body connection and aids co-ordination and proprioception. So it is likely to help where you have noticeable differences from one side to the other. I think Pilates would be the perfect place to start before progressing on to include high intensity activities 🙌

    Sorry to hear this! It would be good to chat about your various lifestyle habits, how much sitting you do etc, and I'd be happy to help. I was struggling with significant back pain and mild sciatica, Pilates got me to the stage where I can move well and lift quite heavy again with no problems, and I see this time and again with my members. Feel free to drop me a message on +447480991068 and we can chat

    @@pilatesguy well, not at all actually. I work construction so i’m moving the entire day and when i get home i got a home gym. I maybe sit like 2-3 hours a day, Max! I tryed about everything, 6 weeks rest: no succes 18 weeks chiro: no succes… :( All they do is massage me and throw pills at me, from the dozen physical therapists i went to not even one of them gave me exercises like isnt that why a physical therapist exists? To tone down ur pain and than give u exercises to eliminate it? Thats why im now looking at pilates cause like yoga for example feels great but it only gives like an hour or 2 relief…

    Ok, how does it feel when you're working? Initial exercise will only give shirt term relief, but you gotta play the longer game. Invest in 12 weeks of consistent practice and address a few other potential factors such as hydration, sleep, nutrition if needed. Yes I've heard of many physical therapists just relying on the heads on. They should be assessing cause and providing a plan to improve your situation. Did you have any idea of cause, any confirmed bulging discs or herniation even?

    @mikegaming3826 and I feel your pain on the age thing. My mid 20s were horrendous. When I hit 30 and had significant inprovement it was a new lease of life. Now at 38 I'm beating my 22 year old self in mobility and strength

    Does pilates adress the fascia mainly rather then muscle?

  • @pilatesguy

    @pilatesguy

    2 ай бұрын

    Any movement works on the fascia, regular movement and lots of variety of movement, avoiding long periods in the same position. This is all good for fascia. It all depends on your starting point really. Pilates certainly addresses the whole body including your muscles. For some, they will get stronger, others will get stronger through a greater range of motion (mobility). Often people strong in the gym are weak in the core and are limited in mobility. They would hugely benefit (this was me). But you will not gain lots of muscle with Pilates. Does that help?

    @@pilatesguy Yeah thats good thanks and also you said not staying in same position is good for fasica, is this true and proven? Because that's interesting and sounds right and could be why active recovery is useful. Also what is your training(worktou) schedule, like how often do you do pilates and also what other training you do yourself just wondering. Also what do you consider the core? The combination of abs,lower back and hips? Just wondering thanks!

    Sorry for delay! 1, there's not much proven about the fascia at the moment. I think it's just become an area of further study as it is recently being taken more seriously. 2, I think active recovery is brilliant. You can get so much from it. 3, my schedule is strength training compound lifts 2 x per week. 25 min pilates and mobility before each session. 2 x per week approx 30mins functional HIIT, before one of these 25 mins pilates and mobility. 1 x 1hr pilates Session with an instructor There are a lot of varying definitions of the core. When I mention engaging core, I'm talking the deeper core unit such as TVA and pelvic floor. But the wider core of course incorporates all of what you've mentioned. I'd go as far as to say most of the muscles of the mid lower torso and hips. Hope that helps! But opinions will differ depending who you speak to!
