Yet, swordsman train for this too countering the counter. This countering of counters causes the counter to counter another counter while anticipating their counter to be countered. Due to this, never fight a swordsman that carries an abacus.

I sure did. Very impressive! But what’s that about a sword?

The "beat" parry will also often give you an opportunity for a critical strike, though you do have to make sure your frames match.

I love your uploads, thank you for making these. Are there any books or novels that narrate sword fights in a similar way as you do in your videos? The words you use are concise and really help paint a clear picture of what is happening even for someone like me who's not yet fluent in English and has no experience in swordsmanship. It's invaluable.

tbf foil fencers also make a distinction between parrying and beat attacks, as there's a difference in terms of the types of responses you can get to each (I'd find it difficult to disengage a beat attack once it hits my sword for example)

Turn the point using fingertip control into the direction of the beat. This causes the point of contact of the beat to slide into your strong+bell guard. From here you have choices. Opposition counter attack or drop the point to capture and transition into Croise. If the referee has a good eye, direct repost using fingertip control. A beat to the strong is counted as a parry in your favor and priority should be passed to you.

But this depends on the fighting style of your opponent. A feint can easily counter this and get you killed (aka defeated) in a duel. But against more aggressive and "impulsive" fencers, this might actually be useful. I'll try this on the next fencing session. Thanks 👍🏻

There's a lottttt of Modding and expensive full body tracking that goes into things like that, I play it a lot too and they clip right through all the time

So that's how parry work in real life.

So, sometimes "parry" is considered both the deflection of the attacker's weapon *and* the response hit, and "riposte" is *only* considered as the response hit part? Correct me if I'm wrong 😅

Parrying is moving the incoming blade away from you, blocking is stopping the blade entirely

Breaks are usually further up the blade so you'll still have the strong of your sword left to use in defense. If it breaks during the parry and their swing continues through undeterred, well... at least you won't have much of anything to worry about soon enough.

Yeah, Mordhau's chambering is fairly realistic. You can indeed cut into another cut. Mordhau is arguably stricter about it than reality, as you have to exactly mirror the cut, when in reality you have more options on how to do it.

@@Wowdongle it’s purely for sparring man. Swords are flexible and ones you use in light gear like he is are supposed to be super flexible. So you ya know don’t thrust and actually do something to your buddy

@@Wowdongle most of these are dull…. But real swords flex too so this is the closest way and these still hurt man they won’t cut but it’s still a metal stick. Wooden swords are just for practice swinging solo unless you want to go do something like kendo…

Interestingly enough, there is no historical evidence for parrying. Historians and martial arts enthusiasts have scoured tirelessly through fencing manuals and historical accounts of battles/duels. There just have never been any accounts of parrying, and we have literally hundreds of relevant accounts that go into great detail. Turns out we first hear about parrying with the advent of movies in the early 20th century. That all goes for the West only. Information, especially primary and secondary sources, are very inaccessible when it comes to the East (mainly the language barrier)
