Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy this video explaining what is OSHA. Sometimes we need to start back to the basics and this is a good foundational video on where OSHA fits in the broad scheme of workplace safety in the US.

Thanks for the video Rachel. OSHA creates the guardrails that businesses need to maintain safe workplaces. Regarding staffing, one thing I never understood and have never gotten an answer to is why OSHA investigates whistleblower complaints relating to non safety-related Acts. Examples include the Affordable Care Act, Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010. I know OSHA is part of DOL, but that role was never intended for the agency when it was established by Congress.

I've always wondered if Marijuana is legal in my state and everyone on my job site is high because everyone jus lit up before work And accidents are recurring daily but company won't test for THC anymore. Are laws going to change? Or maybe a test that can detect the Levels of thc 😩

I work in states where marijuana is legal and there are tests out there. They usually are more a measure of impairment than THC levels since THC stays in the system so long. It sounds more like the employer doesn't want to take action or doesn't know the right route to take. Either way, it's not a legitimate excuse to create an unsafe workplace.

They are underfunded while the EPA is overfunded. The SMEs at OSHA are weak. Citations flow on low hanging fruit since they often only know the basics.

I've never compared the funding of the two but it would be interesting to see. I've met with some inspection officers who are really knowledgeable and others who do focus on the more obvious low hanging fruit. There are a few safety pros I've worked with in the past who have great experience and are at OSHA but to be honest, I think it's a tough place to work and often doesn't pay the best so they don't retain talent as long as other employers.
