What is Opentherm, whats makes a smart thermostat smart? What is TPI? This video explains all.

In this video we're going to be going into more detail about Smart thermostats and what Opentherm is. In order to buy the right Smart Thermostat you need to understand what Opentherm is.
Before we understand what Opentherm is and what language smart thermostats speak, we need to understand how non smart thermostats, with no Opentherm, works. Non smart thermostats would simply react to either being too hot or too cold. When a non smart thermostats asks for heat the boiler would kick in and heat the radiators until the room temperature is raised to what is set on the non smart thermostat.
Once the temperature is achieved the non smart thermostat would tell the boiler to shut down, the problem with this is the radiators are still hot which causes the room to overheat. This is called an overshoot. Once the radiators have cooled down the room temperature can begin to drop, unfortunately, the non smart thermostat doesn't ask the boiler to kick back in again until the room temperature is below what we want to be at. This causes the room to be mainly either too hot or not hot enough, which is wasteful and inefficient.
An Opentherm Smart Thermostat will analyse the room and make use of lots of data it has collected over a period of time. When the room temperature is raised via the Smart Thermostat, the Opentherm smart thermostat will look at the current temperature and compare it against how much the temperature needs to increase by. With this information it will determine how much heat the room requires to increase the temperature in a quick enough time frame. As the temperature increases the Opentherm smart thermostat will decrease the temperature of the radiators until it eventually matches the heat loss of the room. This means the Opentherm Smart thermostat will be able to trickle the heat into the room as the same rate.
Opentherm is a language which isn't spoken by some boilers, so it's important, before you go and buy an Opentherm Smart Thermostat, that you have confirmed that your boiler speaks the Opentherm language. If you have a Vaillant boiler which is less than 5 years old or a Worcester which is less than 5 years old then these boilers do not speak the Opentherm language.
Here is a list of boilers that do speak Opentherm - Baxi 600 + 800 range, Ideal Logic, Viessmann 100 + 050, Ferroli iBoiler.
I'm sure the list of boilers which speak the Opentherm language will increase with time, just be sure to find out yourself before purchasing an Opentherm Smart Thermostat.
TPI is a thought process which most Opentherm smart thermostats have which can be used to the boiler you have plugged the Opentherm smart thermostat into a non Operntherm compatible boiler. Rather than wait for the temperature to get to the temperature we've asked for the Opentherm Smart Thermostat will turn the heating off before it gets there, knowing that the overshoot will occur and get us to the right temperature. It will then kick the heating back in again before the temperature drops to prevent the temperature from falling below what we've asked for.
That's really all you need to know about Opentherm Smart thermostats. There are lots of Opentherm Smart thermostats available on the market just be sure to double check that the one you are buying speaks the correct language for your boiler.

Great video. I can't believe these manufacturers can't just include opentherm as a standard language, it would be better for the whole industry! I got myself a Drayton Wiser smart heating system but it won't talk to my Vaillant boiler. Found a module from AWB that translate from opentherm and Ebus. Hopefully it will work...

Hi there. Great video and well explained. We are in the process of buying a flat that has a Baxi Duo-Tech 24 HE Condensing boiler with an old looking thermostat. I'm thinking of upgrading to Drayton Wiser system with Smart TRVs that can trigger the boiler from the TRVs as well. -Does my boiler do OpenTherm? -If not os it worth to upgrade to the Wiser or is it just going to run the boiler 24/7 on full blast becase some of the rooms require heat? -Can an adapter or a PCB upgrade from a newer model add the OpenTherm function to the boiler?

    1) Does a modulating boiler only modulate down the burner, or does it also modulate the rad pump flow rate? 2) is the modulation power (kw) set by the opentherm stat or is the flow temp set by an opentherm stat and then the boiler chooses the appropriate kW? 3) if I use a weather compensating control like a google nest, does that automatically set the boiler output or does it set the flow temperature?

Are you planning on doing any more videos on connecting Nest with opentherm. Also, when using a wiring centre to control multiple hearing zones, do they generally have the connections to receive/transmit opentherm signals ?

I have a new Viessmann 100 combi and Nest 3 gen, wired open therm. Boiler controls are therefore taken over by the Nest so cannot control the DHW preheat on the boiler. I want to turn this off, especially when away from home, but no option on the app or Nest control. I turn the CH off on the app there is not the same option for the DHW but not a problem if no water drawn off but the pre heat is the problem as I assume it continues to operate. Any suggestions, really like the videos but having watched many I see no mention of this problem?

Is there any chance I'll void my boiler's warranty if I connect an OpenTherm device (such as Nest Heat Link) myself? Or should I hire a professional to do it? I asked the installer and he knew nothing about how to connect a Nest controller. I'm sure I can find somebody, but there are also instructions on doing myself. I just don't want to risk voiding the warranty. Thanks in advance!

You aware that tado have basically reverse-engineered the proprietary digital control standards that Worcester Bosch and Valiant use on most of their boilers? You need to check compatibility with them, but there's a good chance you've got another good digital control option even if your boiler doesn't have Opentherm (which tado also supports).

@@adyandrey23andrey I believe you're right, he has a combi boiler which shuts off the heating when the hot water is being used. But I can't see it affecting the curve too much, maybe a bit when the sensor is asking for heat and not getting it, it may then send the message to ramp up, so when it switches back to heating the boiler will want to heat the heating system to a higher temp. This would be rectified pretty quickly one the boiler recognises that it's getting the heat it's asking for. But I'm interested to learn more if he's having a different experience
