Samarthguru Siddharth Aulia explains the meaning of this Tibetan Mantra- Om Mani Padme Hum. What is the meaning of OM? The whole existence, the god; they do not use the word God, instead they prefer the word ‘existence’. The entire existence echoes the word Omkar. The whole existence is resonating omkar. It is illuminated with the mystical sound of Omkar. The entire existence is OM. The sage of Chandokya Upnishad also says “Om Iti Brahma” i.e. Omkar is Bramha, the creator. Omkar is also called “naad brahma”. Naad or the mystical sound symbolizes Brahma, the creator. Patanjali calls this profoundly respectful conduct towards God or the surrender to God. But what is god? It is said that Om is god. So, in Om Mani Padme Hum, the word Om stands for God or Existence. Moving on to Mani Padme Hum. Now we are talking about the soul. The divine sound of Om exists in each and every being as a soul. Every being has a soul. In what form does this soul exist? The soul exists in the form of ‘mani padma’. But what is the actual character or nature of the soul? Now they describe the soul- mani padme i.e. the diamond in the lotus. Mani, which is the tenth gate or the shiv netra (i.e. the third eye of Shiva). Those who have undertaken nirati samadhi have seen an illuminating star right at the center of inner space. Tibetan mystics have described it as mani. It is also called blue pearl (neel mani). Padm is one of the many names of Lotus. It means blue lotus. It is also named Blue Pearl. It has been called a diamond as well. So that dot is called mani in the mantra om mani padme hum. The Indian sages have described it as a lotus with a thousand petals. So it’s a lotus which has a diamond right in the center. In nirati samadhi, you must have experienced a lotus that illuminates like a star at the center. The illumination that is there in the form of mani is right at the center of the flower. It is surrounded by a lotus with thousands of petals. The philosophers of the west have called it the mystic rose or the magic rose. The Indian philosophers and sages have termed it sahasr dal kamal.
It has several names. Saint Kabir calls it mansarover, baikunth, amarlok. Sundar Das calls it abhyantar. There are many names. The same thing has been called Padm - the blue lotus by the Tibetan mystics. What are the other names- like om. Om symbolizes God. Similarly, Hum symbolizes the Soul.

For your kind information Om (ohm)- Om is the sound or “vibration” of the universe. This sound is the most important of all; but in the context of chanting and mantras, it is meant destroy attachments to ego and establish generosity. Ma (mah)- Removes the attachment to jealousy and establishes ethics. Ni (nee)- Removes the attachment to desire and establishes patience. Pad (pahd)- Removes the attachment to prejudice and establishes perseverance. Me (meh)- Removes the attachment to possessiveness and establishes concentration. Hum (hum)- Removes the attachment to hatred and establishes wisdom. “So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times.
