What is a Fungal Nail Infection?
The most common infection of the nails is caused by an organism called fungus. Fungal nail infections, or onychomycosis, are more common on the toenails than the fingernails. It occurs in approximately 25% of people age 40, and 40% of older people. Nail fungus is characterized by thickened, discoloured and often deformed nails. It is essentially a cosmetic nuisance with no real risk to your health.

My doctor says lamasil is dangerous for liver. But, it seems like that only way to get rid of it.

Many medications are cleared through the liver so Lamisil/Terbinafine needs to be prescribed in the right patient population (e.g. no liver disease, no significant alcohol intake, hepatitis etc) and in the vast vast majority of patients is entirely safe. That said, all medications can have side effects, and rarely the liver is indeed impacted with Terbinafine.
What about fingernail treatment

Toenail fungus is 10 times more common. If your finger nails are affected, first make sure you have the right diagnosis (e.g. fungus, and not psoriasis, lichen planus, or other) from an expert (dermatologist). If it is fungus, many of the treatments are the same, but of shorter duration.
