What is Mercury Poisoning? | National Geographic

Also known as quicksilver, mercury (Hg) was once thought to heal broken bones and prolong life. Today, this chemical element is known to be a dangerous neurotoxin. Mercury poses a range of serious health risks including kidney damage, memory loss, and even death. From burning fossil fuels to eating contaminated swordfish and tuna, learn about the causes of mercury poisoning and how regulating use could prevent future risk.

Forgot about burning coal and fossil fuels releasing mercury into the atmosphere, [too much mercury in my brain??? :-) ], good thing many nations are moving their nations to a hydrogen driven economy, not to mention less blood and treasure spent trying to exploit fossil fuels from other nations. Check out my Twitter page under this same name to see just some of what this world is doing concerning hydrogen.

The origins of the phrase mad as a hatter popularized by lewis carols alice in wonderland exist because of mercury poisoning, along time ago people who made and sold hats (phelters) used mercury in the process, and when exposed to large quantities for prolonged periods of time resulted in a condition which left the individual acting strange and erratic, giving inspiration to lewis carols character The Mad Hatter. Also in the 60-70s many small islands off the coast of japan began experiencing an epidemic of a particular illness with symptoms similar to the cases of stillbirth and disfigured babies associated with the Chernobyl nuclear fallout, this disease would later be classified as minemota and linked directly to the fish being consumed in their region having large concentrations of mercury at consideredly unsafe to consume amounts. Not sure why I just spent the past 15 minutes exhausting my limited knowledge of this peculiar topic but alas, there it is to be shared with strangers who stumble upon this particular comment section.

It's amazing to think that, as kids, 50+ years ago we used to play with mercury. We'd break large thermometers to get the mercury beads and bring them to school. Just about all the kids were carrying vials of mercury and we handled it constantly - rolled it around on our desks.. The kids who had accumulated a large 'glob' were very proud of it. Maybe I'm brain damaged as a result.

@@04dram04 (1) Mercury metal can not absorb through the skin in any significant amount unless you have open wounds. (2) Mercury metal does not make enough vapor at room temperature to be dangerous. (3) Mercury metal also can not absorb through your digestive tract in any significant amount. (4) Mercury metal is not very reactive and therefore does not react with other chemicals very much either. (1) Tests have been done on this subject, and no evidence has been found that mercury metal absorbs through your skin in any significant amount. Also, its just dumb to say that mercury metal absorbs through the skin, since all things absorb through the skin in some amount or another. so, yeah it technically does absorb, but so does basically everything else on the planet. (2) The amount of vapor mercury metal makes is comparable to that of cooking oil. And, last time I checked, people said "oil doesn't even evaporate". To measure how much something evaporates people can find the vapor pressure of that substance. Vapor pressure is just a measurement of how much pressure something builds up when its in a sealed container. And as it evaporates it makes little particles of that substance floating around inside of the container, making it slightly higher pressure inside. The measure of this pressure represents the amount of vapor the substance makes. Mercury metal's vapor pressure is 14,000 times LOWER than that of water. That, combined with the fact that mercury vapor is very dense and sinks in air, (and stays away from your head, which is where you breathe from) means that it is not a significant threat. (3) Tests have been done on this subject, and no evidence has been found that mercury metal absorbs through your digestive tract in any significant amount. (4) Mercury metal sits right next to gold on the periodic table, gold being the second most inert (unreactive) metal on the periodic table. Gold sits right next to platinum, its the MOST inert metal on the periodic table. Mercury is not very reactive and has been demonstrated so through many videos on KZread, where people show mercury metal. When its pure its always shiny and silvery and does not quickly tarnish like many other metals such as silver. [This means that mercury metal can not be considered "highly dangerous" because it does not align with the definition of those words.] [Just take a look at Cody'slab or Nilered, these KZread channels clearly show what I am talking about. Neither of them wear respirators. One of them is a professional chemist and the other grew up in the country with a mercury mine with his parents, and knows how to handle it properly. And both of them are adults.]

Abhilash Nair: Actually Mercury has been used in Amalgam fillings for over 190 years and is still very much in use today in most of Europe, Africa, South America, USA etc. It is far from a decades old method, and still very much alive even though Composite Resin fillings have been around for almost 40 years. So there are still billions of silver fillings out there and therefore still a real danger/concern.

Elemental mercury IS NOT USED in vaccines. Just because the mercury atom exists in one of the chemical compounds does not mean it's harmful. For example, elemental sodium is an extremely volatile and dangerous metal, deadly to humans; but sodium chloride, aka TABLE SALT, isn't going to hurt you unless you eat a completely ridiculous amount. In short: pure element is BAD, compound is fine.

I somehow agree with the video but I think its still missing some evidences to it. Like when mercury is touched, how does our body react? But atleast this video shows us or tells us about its effects to people.

So like in school today we were learning about thermal energy and we had thermometer and it broke in half on the floor bc this kid was tickling my bestie who was holding it and she dropped it. Then the science teacher wasn’t paying attention, so I grabbed the broken thing and took it to him. So mercury was all over my hands And nobody but him knew how dangerous mercury was. He didn’t care that I held it even tho when I was holding it I had a cut on my hand. Then later on, me and 5 others get called down to the office. We go to our art room, there’s 4 adults in there... all wearing gloves even tho they weren’t interacting with the chemical. They tell us to take off our shoes cuz they interacted with the mercury.. they didn’t give us any protection for our hands... even tho we had to take off what had the most of the mercury on. I hit my cut on an accident right where their just so happen to be a bunch of mercury... now there’s a huge chance there’s some in my body... Yet again They don’t allow anyone In The Room until everything is taken care of.. how stupid is Leslie Middle School! If u live in Michigan. Under any reason should u go to Leslie Middle School in Leslie.
