it's not a trend it's part of many people's culture until westerners got their hands on it. Used to be cheap when it wasn't popular for me growing up now it's like crazy expensive when U gentrify food

They are similar, but technically not the same. Taro powder is purple, but the vegetable itself tends to be more white.

Hi there! Matcha lover here! Matcha is the JAPANESE green tea powder that has this tasty stringent tang at the end. CHINESE green tea is actually brown with a barely sweet tang at the end. Both smell strong and are normal caffeinated like a cup of coffee. I prefer Matcha/Japanese green tea and usually pair it with a red bean/ADZUKI paste treat.

Matcha is actually Chinese. The way of making matcha was very complex in China and an emperor regarded it as a badge of aristocratic corruption and banned it and ordered the coutry to adopt a simpler way of tea-making and serving, but the matcha tradition was introduced to Japan before than ban and survived until today. That's the history.

qwerty uiopa I am drinking my morning cup right now and it is dry with an earthy taste. The best word would be astringent. It has the same caffeine as a cup of black coffee (so not much). BUT it is creamy and smoothe with a splash of milk and a LITTLE sweetener. Matcha/ green tea is the JAPANESE green tea as shown in the video. CHINESE green tea is the brownish tea served at gas stations and restaurants. Matcha is always Japanese. The Chinese is stringent with a slight sweetness that leaves a slight coating on your tounge a few minutes after a sip. I suggest you go somewhere and try a hot matcha tea with a FRESHLY made 'ADZUKI Mocchi'. It is sticky rice dough ball with a sweet red bean paste inside. While it is very different from what you may be use to, I HIGHLY advise you try the combo snack/drink.
