A little fun fact about the kpop performance that Kim Jong Un organized, one of the groups Red Velvet released a song right before called “bad boy” which had a dance move where the main dancer Seulgi turns and shoots a gun (not a real one she just used her hand to pretend it was a gun) to make sure they didn’t offend anyone in North Korea, Seulgi changed the dance move for the performance to better suit the NK demographic. It was highly respected at the time.

For awhile, back when DVD's were a thing, a common tactic of the North Korean police was to cut off the power to an apartment building, and then raid every apartment. If you had any Western movies or shows in your DVD player, off to prison you went. (Also, a lot of North Koreans aren't allowed in the military. At one point, 25% of young Korean men were considered unfit for military service because of maltrition-related disabilities. And if you're one of the lower classes--if you are, or your ancesters were, thought to be Japanese collaborators, or rivals of King Sung Il for power before the takeover, or tried to flee the country, or were Christian, then you're not trusted to be in the military.)

Fun fact, there is a book by a guy who escaped one of North Korea's prison camps. Why he was there is because his Uncle defected. His father nor his mother attempted to defect and they never showed any signs of wanting to do it. It is said that North Korea's social class goes as Prisoners, Poor farmers, Middle class families and The high leadership. His mother and Brother were executed in front of him when he was young. I could go on and on about the prison camps and the journey to escape but just read the book.
