This doesn't explain what jtbd is, its just an ad asking us to click on the link to find out about it.

How does this guy still have a job after so many failed tries haha. But i get the point. This is actually a concept founded by Dr.Clay Christensen, HArvard Business School Professor. Please see his milkshake example to explain this concept.

Good video. But JTBD sounds like basic user research to me. The character was asking his users about the context in which they would use his product. That seems too obvious to be at the heart of JTBD. What am I missing?

You are close, but JTBD focuses on what people *have* done which is much different than what they say they would do. It also looks for those switching moments from first thought through use, so it captures the consumers discovery and decision process leading up to using any product.

User research is not about asking users what they would do. If you take qualitative methods like shadowing or contextual inquiry you are trying to understand and observe behaviour despite what users say.

JBTD is a tool that can be used in user research. JTBD can be a hypothesis in which you can experiment with your target customer

John should stop pretending that product developers or engineers design software. They don't. They code it after researchers and designers design the experience based on craft and science and great prototypes.

You'd find that most "user research" only scratches the surface. JTBD unpacks so many other interesting ideas such as offering a unique way to view competition to your product and targeting users emotional rather than functional needs.
