I will tell you what the pros and cons are for working as a groomer at Petco & as a groomer at Petsmart. I will give you my experience as a grooming working at Petsmart.
I will say that I did not get trained at a Petsmart / Petco, so I have expereince grooming at a private grooming salon.

I feel like this is pretty narrow minded. I have been working for petco and was trained by petco. I had to past several breed specific tests to become a full groomer. I can do several breed cuts and I've never had a dog that needed to be regroomed by someone else after being groomed by me. Just the other day I walked into a high end private salon just with the intention of leaving my contact info. The manager went over my groom photos and immediately booked me an interview. So again I think your generalizing because I've seen some incredibly talented people trained by petco and working for petco.

The Petsmart I worked at was horrible. I worked there for two months as a bather and saw and heard things that disgusted me. Workers giving the dogs the middle finger, yelling at the dogs and telling the dogs they hate them, tugging and pulling on the dogs way too hard. Constant bitching and complaining how much they hated being there. Every worker was miserable and it was the most negative toxic work environment I ever worked in. I will never recommend that place to anyone. It’s a shame that so many people take their dogs there. I reported the place and I hope something changes. I couldn’t watch that shit happen anymore I would’ve snapped and hurt somebody because I love animals so much and what was happening there was SO wrong.

So sad to hear that. I applied to be a dog trainer apprentice at Petsmart, have also considered being a bather. It's my dream to work with dogs, they always make me so happy. Then again, I suppose that for some people, the novelty of working with dogs wears off.

It just depends on what someone is looking for when it comes to getting into grooming. Im a new dog groomer at petsmart (was a bather for about a yr and a half) Im not really looking into making it a career, so for someone like me who just wants a job for a few years while I put myself through school, I like petsmart. Of course with any cooperation it's going to get annoying because of the many policies, but the one thing I LOVEE about petsmart is all the safety rules. It doesn't drive me insane that I have to slightly turn to grab a tool because having shears on the table next to a dog to me is potentially dangerous. Or a slicker brush. I also like that I didn't spend any money getting a set of blades, good guard combs, basic starting out shears, clippers, dematting tools, etc. I didn't have the money to dish out thousands for grooming schools (which you gotta be careful with those, because some will just take your money and not really care if you learn or not) I think petsmart should make the academy longer, for sure. But im also glad we don't get awhole lot of breed cuts, bc that takes a wholeeeee lot of time most of us don't have when my store we typically can take up to 8 dogs a day(and they want us to take more since we are getting bathers specifically to help) while answering phones, doing check ins, (negatives about working for them) . I also like how petsmart can't force us to do dogs that we feel uncomfortable doing. We had a great groomer who started out in a private salon and had been doing it for nearly two decades and she shit on petsmart a lot, but that was the one thing she loved, bc some private salons will make a dog do services. And I disagree about growing the skill working with a cooperation. If you meant on the job, then yes but if you meant in general than no, because a person could always learn on their own time by watching videos, workshops, etc. so yeah, just depends, if a person wants to do shows, then no petsmart wouldn't be a great place, because we don't get a lot of breed cuts and the environment really is meant for that, and some if not most dogs are not trained for it. And the contract thing, There not going to sue you or make you pay if you generally find out grooming isn't for you. They don't hold you hostage for the next two years 🤣 If you used them for free stuff, and brag about leaving them for another salon, then it's a different story. Sorry for the rant lol, just my perspective working for them, Im content with about $1000 a week, since I really don't want dog grooming as a career. I will also add your team and managers is big game changer too.

Kinda shitty that groomers would turn away those who have trained at a petsmart/petco. Makes no sense to me. If they are interested in working with a private groomers, that seems to indicate they are looking for a change, and more than likely open to changing bad habit and bettering their techniques as a groomer. Even if they may have learned to groom incorrectly, they'll certainly be more knowledgeable and proficient in grooming/bathing than someone with zero experience in either.

I've worked as a bather at other salons, but just got hired on as a bather/apprentice today at PetSmart. The other places never wanted to train me to the point where I would become an official apprentice, and just wanted to keep me behind the scenes, doing everything else. The part where you mentioned there not really being room to grow at a PetSmart is something I think people should really know going into it. Don't expect too much. I'm using it for resume experience, and nothing more. I've groomed my own dogs for years, but have nothing official to put down on a resume, since they won't accept "I've groomed my own dogs", as experience. So my plan is to go in, abide by their rules while I'm there, do what I have to do, learn about breed specific cuts, etc... then when my contract is up, move on. It's income, and it's experience.

Thank you for sharing, I am self-taught through my mom‘s self owned dog shop and she’s been grooming for almost 20 years now, I was a hairdresser for five years before I learned how to groom, so I felt comfortable with shears in cutting hair, I love it and I would never work corporate! I do think there are some great places to learn from doing corporate, and you are more certified as far as that goes, but you also have to have passion behind pet grooming if you want to love your job. I do think all those strict rules would be hard to follow, but it does teach you very good safety habits and I’ve learned that along the way being self taught. A lot of it is common sense but also safety is the first priority

Switching from a major corporation one stop shop to a proud private grooming company is exactly like my 15 years of Serving/Bartending experience. Those who are not willing to change or badge new shop policies are extremely difficult to work with. Also coworkers and management may make a huge difference in each individual experience person to person. Loved the conversation in the video though. Well said Young lady… I’m old-school groomer retired now doing it for pleasure in my home shop. I totally agree with you. Also what a joke that they charge extra for things that should be included from the beginning… Some even charge extra to clean the ears lol. I had a friend that just came from a private grooming shop that charged her extra for a squirt of cologne , a bow And oh let’s not leave out a charge for extra time under warm water and a blueberry facial.… The blueberry facial I get leaving the pet under the extra warm water , what is that all about?yikes…I encourage people to do their homework, research groomers and try to find one through Word of mouth that has an excellent reputation….the only simi-positive thing Petsmart and Petco have going for them is the see-through window …I have witnessed dog abuse in a private shop before where I was working many years ago.… The corporate windows should be one-sided so that you can see in but that the pet cannot see out for safety reasons…You were absolutely right …the groomer cannot keep the dogs attention and you could put an eye out or cut a toe off just a name a few.… My advice is to seek a private groomer and keep it at that. Good luck to everyone. Your puppies are worth the price. Grooming is a must and should be taken very seriously.🐾🐾💕💕

A client of mine could not wait, went to pet smart with her mini doodle (23 lbs.) She likely had some knots, I’ll give them that but she was striped from her forehead to the end of her tail. I’ve been grooming her for 3 years and never had to do that. Anyway, owner was charged double what I charge and $30 was added for a “ conditioning treatment “, WHAT? $30 for conditioner? That is almost the cost of a gallon size bottle! I was shocked, so was her owner.

I’ve worked at a few different petsmarts in my 6 years of grooming. I feel like the products are good- they get the dog clean and they do smell a lot better. I feel like no matter what soap you use, the washing technique is all that matters. The Furminator Treatment to me is almost a scam. The blowdrying, the way you brush is what gets that not matted undercoat out- any deep conditioner as well. I learned to groom at a Petsmart (basically the basics) and spent 2 years in a private salon. When I came back to petsmart I was shocked of the lack of quality and choppy cuts. They were OKAY with it!!! WHATTT and yes they make the most stupid, nonprofessional grooming rules that hinder speed and quality -So frustrating!! The rules are made by people who clearly not groomers lol!! They just care about the numbers.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. There are a lot of private grooming shops that use crappy products on dogs, it's all about the money 💰 Usually, they have no formal pet grooming skills other than the school of "hard knocks" and they don't like people who have gone to grooming school. I think the best is to do both, try corporate, try private and then open your own shop. A lot of private shops are family run and they only hire others to help them pay the bills, if you're not family they are not interested in teaching you.

I went to a local groomer and asked if she would train me to groom, and she paid me hourly (minimum wage) to bathe while she trained me at the end of the day to groom after I was proficient in bathing. The problem with learning to groom at a corporate store is your not going to learn everything you need to know and then your stuck in a contract with that store.

From what I saw no one mistreated dogs there. They have cameras throughout the salon and if an employee is caught mistreating a dog they are fired. Your groomer may just not be the right fit for you if they have been giving you attitude. But I don’t think they are mistreating your dog😊

It’s usually an 8 1/2 hour shift but the half hour is your lunch break. I used to work either 7- 3:30 or 10:30 - 7 6 days a week. I would say it depends on who the store manager is when it comes to having a flexible schedule. Some managers are nice and will do that and others won’t.

Most people don’t get a chance to work private from the start because most private businesses won’t give them a chance. Which leaves people where ? At petsmart or petco. How will that individual be able to grow if no one is giving them a chance? It’s common sense!

Don’t take your kitty to Petsmart for grooming unless it is very comfortable with barking dogs. Your cat will be crated in the same kennel room with 10-20 barking dogs. It’s an extremely stressful environment for cats and I feel so sorry for them.

According to you how you suppose to make a puppy quiet ? Hit it ?? Or scream at it ?? A puppy or Dog don’t speak yet they have feelings just like humans! And if you want to ”grow” then hit a office.

  • @furtheloveofdogs7732

No absolutely not! But when a dog owner is outside the window making faces at their dog the dog won’t be still and in turn makes your job very difficult! I know they have feelings! I like to have a bond with all the dogs I groom so they trust me and love coming to see me but that is difficult when the dog is flying around the table trying to get to it’s owner. You could potentially grow as a groomer if you work at a corporate salon but usually only if you find people to help you grow outside of a corporate salon.

I'll save you years of heartache. She didn't want people outside the window distracting the dog. How does that in any way imply she thinks you should hit it????? I just started petco grooming last week, I have six weeks more of pre academy training before I go into academy. I see some flaws, but it's efficient in alot of ways, but some rules makes no sense. It's also never followed. I've heard horror stories about academy but am going to push through because I absolutely want this as my forever career, I don't plan on staying with petco forever. I also can say your opinion is kicking down of rude or more so your take? I know two people making 6 figures + who started at petco and stayed for a majority of their grooming time. But also again, they test different breeds on you before testing out and you learn as you go, just as you would appreciating. We have to test out with 6 dogs and then 3 more afterwards before getting our certificate of completion. Our GM and SLM take it very serious usually

When i was on my search for grooming education, i was origionally going to pay for my education. Well petsmart got back to me and hired me on the spot so i said, Hey! Its worth a shot and who doesnt want free education. Ive been in this company for 5 months, i was about to go to accademy and decided... free isnt everything, so im going back to my schooling for dog grooming. Our accademy has been squeezed into 3 weeks, 3 WEEKS. HOW DO YOU LEARN A WHOLE CAREER IN 3 WEEKS. When i was hired on there was a salon leader, mature staff, a generally good team. It took no time at all to lose all of our geeat staff, our salon leader. Infact all of our strong management are quitting or have one foot out the door. This is not a safe environment to learn in, they push you to take on more then you can handle, when you have decided that a pet isnt going to work out at a petsmart salon, management will not back you up. Theyre only looking for numbers and good reviews.what your looking for in education is not worth breaking your body for. Trust me there are safer ways to manage stress. Yes the 2 year contract is no longer in affect. But ask yourself why, do your research. Theyre is so many abuse in the workplace violations nations wide in both canada and the US. simply put they cant afford anymore lawsuits. The company keeps getting bought out by new management and that management is making it cheaper and cheaper. Im working with someone who has 23 years experience in petsmart. This company isnt what it use to be.
