Awesome video. My di2 battery is running out; it's been only 8 years. The battery pack is too expensive, so I wanted to look for anyone who tried this sort of DIY. Thanks from Korea

Apparently, the BT-D110 doesn't have case clips, it's glued on instead, you have to cut the case where the the white PCB holder and black end cap meet. The two batteries inside are the same 570mAh as in video, though.

I just dissected a Campy EPS v3 battery. Found a fried chip on the circuit board. Any idea as to what leads I can get to replace the part to solder back on ?

it's possible replace the 2 battery for a new battery with more capability?

Theoretically you could do just that.

I'm about to install a di2 system to my hybrid. I have sc-m9051 display, sw-m8050r shifter and mu705 8speed motor. Now, since the battery is not cheap, I thougt to cheat and use two 18650 cells in series. I connected the components and battery - enabled bluetooth on my phone and tried to connect with e-tube android app. After some fiddling, I managed to update the firmware of the display, but not the motor or the shifter. The app states, that there is no info about the battery charge level. I guess there are no cheating possible then 😂

No cheating possible. The battery has a microchip to monitor power as well as it houses the intelligence for the derailleurs. You have to have the Shimano battery to work.

The same applies to btdn110. But i can disassemble and change the original battery elements to 18650 type and disconnect them for charging? At least that is the plan, since I would like to mount it to inside steerer.

James, thanks for showing what is inside the battery. What is the purpose of the circuit board. Some inventors make their own battery using 2 Li-Ion batteries in series without any similar circuit board? Also, how do the TT Di2 shifters work that have 2 switches, 1 for up shifts and the other for downshifts, when the only wire from the shifter has only 2 conductors? Do the shifters also have a circuit board to transmit digital pulses to the other components?

The circuit board is the primary control chip of the Di2 system (what Shimano refers to as the Master unit): e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.0.0-01-EN.pdf The update to the newer BT enabled battery (DN110) has a newer control chip. If you try to mix and match batteries junction boxes and mechanical components of different generations, for example, you can end up with a non-functional system.

They make them that way to profit, as any other electronics manufacturer does, they simply put a cheap chip on a cheap battery and sell them for 100s of dollars, good margin. And dare to use third party batteries as they will update the firmware to not function for that.

Is there a Patent number on the battery? I'd be curious to find the schematics.

My Di2 Battery outer cover is stuck in the seatpost. 25.4mm :( Any ideas how I can get it out?

I'm pretty sure the circuit board is just the over/under charge protection management and nothing more. The battery pack simply has to provide proper voltage to servos...and that's it.....no?

Can you take apart a Di2 switch? I was wondering if the climbing shifters that cost $130 are just a momentary switch or is there a circuit board in the switch box?

All Di2 switches and components have circuit boards inside, the only exception is SW-R610 which is a simple micro switch. You could make a budget Di2 setup using mechanical shifters and Di2 climbing switch. It won't be very user friendly but it will work. You can also slice and dice Di2 cables and solder them together. Hope this helps.

James or someone, have you managed to do the same with the newer Shimano Di2 BT-DN110 model? I am having a hard time "opening" the housing... It does not have the tabs to push in to release the housing...

I have not yet.

Those are cheap flat-top cells, possibly 14500s, that you can easily desolder and replace with much better ones for less than $15 total and less than a half-hour's work. You can get two of them for $5 all over, but they're junk, dangerous, and the sellers are completely dishonest about the capacity.

@@Jamesthebikeguy can you get that chip separately? How do you check if the one in the battery has gone? I changed the cells on my battery with quality cells from a reputable source. It became apparent the cells were not at fault but the battery suffers rapids drain and on two different di2 systems the battery fails very quickly. The only thing it can be is the chip as all other components have been found to be perfectly working and updated. Any ideas?

Can the BTR2 battery be charged with just a hobby charger [8.4v 0.5A] connected to an e-tube and to the BT (battery and get it to charge. Instead of getting BCR2 and a 3 or 5 port junction box

The battery was dead anyway. Had tons and tons of miles on it and was no longer holding the charge. Since the battery had been replaced I got the chance to break this one open before throwing it away.

Is anyone know what is electrical difference between BT-DN110 and SM-BTR2 battery? Both batteries have the same voltage and capacity. It looks like Shimano is doing money on it and limitation is only in SW. Do You have any photos of both PCBs?

btr 2 compatible with ultegra 6780 and 9070 and dn 110 is with ultegra 8050 and da 9150, you cannot mix.

@@dosazsolt9725 Mostly it depends from mode which You can set in tube SW for your computer. In road bike I am using SM-EW90-A. When I choose option MTB there is more limitation than on road bike, so for example in MTB mode I cannot use shifter from road bike. When I switch to road bike I am able to drive M8050 and M8070 derailleurs using road bike shifters. Unfortunately there is forbidden to mix MTB and road derailleurs. It is very interesting topic at all. I am on the way to debug what communication is used by BTR2 and DN110 batteries to confirm that this is only marketing :)

Anyone pulled apart the Di2 charger?

Thanks for destroying an expensive battery for us... shame you probably dont still have the bits, need a little bit of reverse engineering done - the three wires in the ribbon cable, clearly battery + and - but that third one.... either balance tap or temp sensor... need to know ;)

Since all these parts need to be together to be operational why take them apart and weigh them?

Cringey: "causing feelings of embarrassment or awkwardness." Not sure that applies here... This was a dead battery so its better to take it apart and let others see rather than just through it away.

Watching this was a painful waste of time. "Lookie mommy, I can break things and render them to screwed up to repair with new batteries.

On the contrary, I found the video incredibly useful as a reference when modding my BT-D110, especially on how to open the case and what batteries to use. The end result weighs 25g after I removed the case and soldered in smaller capacity batteries (enough for 1x). It even fits into drop bar now, way more ergonomic location than the seatpost.
