    I found the series to be remarkably educative and engaging. It could be fascinating to see more about the severe weather representations, how they form and why they behave in specific ways; such as the supercell thunderstorms (rotating thunderstorms) and how tornadoes develop. Moreso about the way the whole tornadic system works, what makes one supercell more favourable to generate tornadoes than others. What are wind shears, updrafts, RFD, FFD, why does mammatus clouds form in such conditions and what are the flanking lines? Also, it would be great to familiarize with the radar features of a supercell, and all the sorts of supercells there can be.

    I experienced a hailstorm today shortly before I needed to leave on a trip to the doctor's office. it lasted about thirty seconds, and the hailstones were apout the width of nickels, pennies, and dimes, and there were even a few that were the size of golf balls. I will not forget that experience anytime soon

    Maybe someone can explain this to me, but this video is suggesting that the smaller hailstones reach a much lower terminal velocity than larger hailstones. Everything falls at the exact same gravitational acceleration, the only difference in a terminal speed is the balance of forces. Gravity and drag. When drag equals gravity the hailstone will stop accelerating. The larger hailstones will certainly have a higher drag (due to larger volume) and thus SHOULD have a lower terminal velocity. Please correct me if I’m wrong

  • @chlosies

    @chlosies

    2 жыл бұрын

    Mass is the answer to your question. The mass of the larger hailstone, makes it fall faster. The terminal velocity formula, v = the square root of ((2*m*g)/(ρ*A*C)). m = mass of the falling object g = the acceleration due to gravity. On Earth this is approximately 9.8 meters per second. ρ = the density of the fluid the object is falling through. A = the projected area of the object. This means the area of the object if you projected it onto a plane that was perpendicular to the direction the object is moving. C = the drag coefficient. This number depends on the shape of the object. The more streamlined the shape, the lower the coefficient. You can look up some approximate drag coefficients

    What if there's hail but no thunder or lightening ?

  • @stephensnell1379

    @stephensnell1379

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's not possible All thunderstorms have to have thunder and lightning as the lightning actually causes the thunder by causing the air to very quickly expand and contract back together again(the faster the air slams together the louder the thunder will be)

  • @marshallsweatherhiking1820

    Snow pellets seem to be better at producing negative charge in the cloud compared to hard hail. Because the charge regions are different ( less negative charge in the middle region ) there is more lightning high in the cloud but less frequent lightning hitting the ground, at least right where the hail is falling. You also don’t hear as much thunder because the hail makes a lot of noise. My own experience is that hail storms produce positive charged strikes, but they usually occur in the clear region several miles away from the location where the hail is hitting the ground. This is often the case with rotating hailstorms at least.

  • @marshallsweatherhiking1820

    @marshallsweatherhiking1820

    Жыл бұрын

    If an updraft is strong enough to create hail it is more than strong enough to create lighting. The location of the lightning is different in a hail storm compared to an ordinary thunderstorm because the charge regions are often different. There is always lightning somewhere in the cloud though.
