What is "h-index"?
Why the "h-index" is important?
Scholars should generate good research work to get a good h index value. The h-index helps measure how much the co-researchers cite a researcher's article. Therefore, the h-index helps in augmenting the impact of the research work.
Scholars can present their abilities and potential in the related field of study using the "h-index" and other metrics (such as the i10-index). In addition, they can show both the productivity and citation impact of the publications. Finally, it is essential to know that competition for academic jobs, particularly postdocs, is very high and challenging. As a result, researchers can obtain scholarships, fellowships, scientific positions, and job opportunities worldwide according to their resumes and scientific metrics. Therefore, the h-index can show the ranking of scholars applying for a position.
How do we calculate the "h-index"?
It is easy to count it. Consider that you want to calculate your h-index, and you have five papers with the below citations:
X1=5 X2=8 X3=1 X4=2 X5= 4
First, try to order them in decreasing (ordered from greatest to least) format as follows:
X2=8 X1=5 X5= 4 X4=2 X3=1
Then your h-index is 3 because you have 3 publications with 3 or more citations.
What is a good h-index?
Hirsch's reviews and checks mentioned that after 20 years of research, an h-index of 20 is good, 40 is outstanding, and 60 is exceptional. In addition, he denoted that 84% of Nobel prize winners in physics had an h-index of at least 30. So, you can keep this point in mind and analyze the question, "What is a good h-index?"
What is "i10-index"?
Another criterion to see a researcher is to help gauge a scholar's productivity. The i10-index was developed by Google Scholar.
How do we calculate the "i10-index"?
The i10-index is simple to calculate. For example, if an author/researcher's i-10 index is 6, it indicates that six of their publications are cited ten times. By referring to "My Citations" in Google Scholar, free and easy to use, you can see the i10-index of every researcher you want!
