I really enjoyed listening to this conversation. A different perspective compared to others' ideas of what grammar is, but I see similarities as well. Especially liked the point that was mentioned about how language enables clearer thinking. So looking forward to the next installment. Thanks for sharing!

Maybe it's because when I was home-schooled by mom make me learn Latin, but one of the reasons why I I'm homeschooling my son now is to be able to teach him laugh when he gets to third grade

I'm a big fan of Latin. When you mention the elimination of Latin, as your host being an English major, how do you feel about schools that no longer instruct the practice of diagramming sentences?

Hey Tom, great question! One of the things I love most about the MP Latin program is that we teach our students how to diagram Latin sentences from the very beginning. In fact, all of our English grammar instruction at MP follows from their mastery of diagramming in Latin. That being said, in my opinion, it's sad that schools aren't teaching students to diagram in English anymore. To me, this is a pretty clear example of getting the cart before the horse. I would guess that many schools have made this decision because of our culture's irrational fear of requiring students to master formal, rigid categorization systems. But a more sophisticated proponent might say that we shouldn't diagram in English because it encourages students to conceptualize English grammar using categories borrowed only from Latin. Many aspects of English grammar don't match perfectly with Latin grammar. Of course, my response to that would be that they are correct. There are English grammatical concepts that can't be described with Latinate grammatical categories, but these are few and far between. By mastering the traditional grammar (borrowed from Latin), one is better prepared for a life of exploring the vagaries and nuances of the beautiful language, which is English, than through any other method. -Shane

Was anyone else minded to consider the relationship between the Shepherd and "his flock"? Do the sheep not fear the dog only to be eaten by the shepherd? What does this example really prompt us to ponder?

I'm finishing up a BA in English Literature this year, and I'd love to teach in a Christian classical school. Can you give me some advice on how to get hired?

@@tombrett7917 Definitely requires some vocabulary and and a little bit of vernacular. I don't blame them really. It's a process more than a language anyways these days.
