Geocaching is helping me lose weight. I am over 400 pounds and it gives me an excuse to go out and be active. I have had to hike for miles at a time to find caches and while it is exhausting it is a creative way to stay active. It’s literally saving my life

I’ve been geocaching since 2004, very enjoyable. One trick I use for urban caching is wear an orange vest, you can wander around with your GPS (yes, I’m old school, but I do use the app) and root through bushes , under light poles and railing and no one pays any attention to you.

@@SpitFactsAndThenDontReply geocaching itself has been aroun d since May 2000, where someone hid a box somewhere in the USA. Parts of the original Geocache are still still being brought to events like the original Bean Can he put in the Cache. The Concept of Caches is older tho, and has several different names like Foxtrails or Letterboxing. The later of those was in the UK, where people had a Letterbox at the entrance of the City with a stamp in it so you could "collect" the city in your own book. Even Spies might have used these kind of methods to send along messages unnoticed, putting them in a place a non-caching human might not look for any kind of information like a rainpipe or behind a sign or in a hole in a wall. It has been around for quite some time and i sure hope it will be :D

Out hiking with my buddy a few weeks ago and randomly stumbled upon a very well hidden geocache. We were about a half mile away from the nearest trail and where just talking when we spotted what looked like a small camo water bottle and opened it up. Inside was a geocache list dating back to 2007 and only 6 entries. Of course we wrote down our names and I’m now researching about a ton more near me. I never realized how fun this would be. Thank you guys for creating this amazing community and I hope to continue it for much longer.

I had a similar experience! Literally just today, I go off the beaten path and find a cylindrical transparent container wedged in a log. I open it to find a load of plastic animal toys and a logbook which indicates it hasn't been discovered since 2017. I too wrote down my name and a little letter expressing the improbable nature of me finding this. And just then, TWO other GEOCACHERS come upon me who are ALSO looking for this same cache. What are the odds?! Now I found a new hobby and two new acquaintances! What a day.

@@Zir816 geocaches aren’t meant to be taken. The word cache itself is actually defined as “a collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place” the former of which defines a geocache and the swag inside for most traditional containers aside from micros. Geocaches come in all shapes and sizes but all are hidden by people or “cache owners” who are devoted to the hobby with a desire to bring willing individuals to a certain location. So no you’re not supposed to take them, it’s not a chest of goods someone put out in the woods for others to profit off of, it’s a container someone put in a location for people to experience something special, weather that be solving a puzzle or as I said before bringing people to a special location. That answer your question?

I was once on a walk when I saw someone on the other side of a fence put what looked like a pinecone on the ground. After they walked away suspiciously, I went to see what it was. It took me a little bit of searching, but I found the geocache. It was very well hidden and kudos to whoever hid it. This got me into geocaching and now sometimes whenever I walk by one (I use the app) I quickly look over the spot. It's fun and it reminds me of treasure hunting. Very enjoyable and would recommend.

@Tugg_Speedman91 I started this morning and have well over 3000 found as well as 6214 hidden. It's pretty fun, I have collected over $20k in cash 6 ounces of gold, 28 ounces of silver, a pokeman or whatever from 1997 that my nephew was very excited about, so I gave it to him instead of throwing it out. Then just a bunch of other odds and ends like a couple bitcoins or whatever that are on these little sticks, I don't know how that stuff works so I'll probably just give it to my nephew or throw it in the trash. It's fun, though. Even if you don't find a ton of valuables, the search is great.

Usually when there's someone watching us we tell them we are playing a treasure hunting game. Most will just assume it's something from the city or a local organisation and happily move on, others will ask more and then we tell them the full story. Suspiciously hanging around somewhere is not always the best idea. Only when it's really you can't talk with the onlookers.

In 2011 I moved to Dubai and hosted/directed a TV show where we used to go out looking for them in the wilderness. It's been a while since I could cache properly since then. I was on a road next to a forest my family were talking and I walked away just to take a peek in the woods and I found a plastic box and I brought it back out of the forest and inside there was a bunch of little toys and a note. The note said something along the lines of congrats on finding this, take an item and replace it with your own item and put the box back were you found it. We came back 20 minutes later with little items and then I put the box where I found it I never went there again but after I will try to find that box again to see if it was a geobox or not

Hello, I have recently started geocaching and I am also writing a paper for school about geocaching. So I have some questions that I would like answered Would you say the geocaching brings people together? if so why? Are there any communities that you know about that talk about there caches? Would you say that you learn from geocaching' Would you consider geocaching engaging? Why or why not? Do people make there own geocaches if so how? Anyone who can answer these questions and add more question for others to answer would be really helpful for my paper I am writing in college, Thank you

Me, too! I've only found 60 caches ... But, I've sent several Geocaching Travel Bugs around the World, and have been able to track how far they have gone; and, I recieved an E-mail every time someone finds it, moves it from place to place, etc.! One of mine actually travelled 35,0000 Miles, around the World!

I found a geocache today in a knot of a tall tree, with my friend. It said that if we found it accidentally to place it back where we found it. I guess we muggled it lol. It was in a pill bottle covered in duct tape, so we thought it was some weird drug deal at first LOL Turns out it just had a little folded up paper with a printed out description explaining that it was a geocache, and a little pretty flat marble with an interesting compass design inside.

I was watching a video of dumb ways people died and they said something about it so I downloaded the app and found out me and my family drive past a good bit of geocache location so now I'm trying to find out what you need to do when you find one I know you need to right geo app name in a book or paper that's in it but I don't know if you have to leave something if you take something out but I'm still going be doing my research on it before I attempt it

I was wondering this. I don't think you're expected to take or leave something but you can if you want. I think I'm going to plan which ones I'm going to try and find before setting off to do so. And take a couple of little items to leave in any that are bigger than micro sized.
