    If you own a 1960-1969 Chevy Corvair you know or should know about Viton O rings. If your Corvair doesn't have them you will be leaking oil, lots of it. If your Corvair has them, you still leak oil, just not from the O rings.

    Hi, I've installed Viton (HTCR) pinion seal in my cars differential as it was leaking. Some sellers that are selling the exact same pinion seal (part number 460448V) say that because I used a Viton seal I must use fully synthetic differential oil and others say that I can use either a mineral based differential oil or a fully synthetic diff oil. Could you please clarify which oil I should be using with the Viton seal ? thanks and keep up the great videos

    Dear Nick, Chemical compatibility perspective, Viton works well with mineral and synthetic oil. However, Viton as a mechanical seal typically leakage is caused by mechanical failures such as abrasion, wear, and tear. There are thousands of the formulation of Viton, it could mitigate some of the mechanical weakness with some limit. If you replaced the seal often, it would be nice to check the rod or seal housing whether it has some defect on the surface.

    @@theo-ringguy6172 Thanks for the tip. I've checked the pinion flange shaft that the pinion seal runs on and there was no grooves on the shaft. The original seal has a black rubber appearance which I am 90 percent sure is a polyacrylic rubber (ACM). I'm pretty sure that it leaked because I put full synthetic gear oil in the differential. The Ford dealer I spoke to as well as all the gear oil manufacturers recommend I put fully synthetic in and that's were I made the mistake. I subsequently found out from the manufacturer of the differential your supposed to only use mineral gear oil. Anyway, I appreciate the advice.

    Hi! Can you pass along any tips on molding FKM? Specifically, transfer molding! I am sampling some out and it is proving to be more difficult to mold over other rubbers. It does now appear to be flowing into the cavity smoothly and parts are coming out with lots of knit lines and blisters. Any advice or general tips when molding FKM would be greatly appreciated. Awesome video, very well detailed!

    Thanks for watching, I probably can't not share too many processing knowledge due to IP concern. 1. Type of FKM is important factor, you need to look at it's rheology data. Make sure the flowing time is sufficient to cover the old cavity. 2. Bubble can be alleviate by using vacuum press. 3. More cavity to load raw material is also the key. Moldflow simulation is a great tool to design mold. It's not cost effective to run 100% accurate, use it as a trouble shooting tool can reduce re-tooling time.

    This is a great question, the easiest/cheapest way to test fluorine content of an FKM is using specific gravity on raw gum/raw polymer. It would be very challenged in final cured product to determine, but it is not impossible. I will work on a content about it. :P

  • @theo-ringguy6172

    @theo-ringguy6172

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the response. It sounds like you are looking for a filler besides carbon black. Wollastonite/Calcium metasilicate can enhance tear resistance in a high-temperature application. In terms of replacement, it really depends on your application and requirement. Typical non-carbon filler such as Barium sulfate(BaSO4), Calcium carbonate(CaCO3) and Titanium dioxide(TiO2).

    Dear jayantakumarborah, It really depends on the formulation and the base polymer type. In the US typically we call it "tackiness". It is related to the curing system. Bisphenol type typically has more of this issue.

    @@jayantakumarborah The method actually very like cooking the egg on a pan. How to reduce the stickiness on a skillet pan, add some oil and make it hot enough. To translate to the rubber world: Under the assumption on you have a smooth, dry, warm open mill roller. 1. Increase the open mill temperature set point higher. 2. Increase the amount of process aid, such as wax. or You need to change a polymer. :P Hopefully, these approaches can resolve your issue.

    I don´t understand one little thing. If want to produce my own compound could I just buy a Fluoroelastomer from 3M and mix it with other things. Or do I need to start from the monomer you mentions. Thank you. This video is the best on KZread!

    Dear RealCellstar, This is a very inspiring topic we can explain! Thanks for the questions. We can explain the roles of the rubber supply chain. If you want to create your own compound, you should buy the appropriate grade of "raw gum" from Manufacturers such as Solvay, 3M or DuPont. These big chemical companies typically did not perform "compounding/mixing", unless special cases. There are a couple of ways to develop your own compound. 1. Actually, in the rubber industry, you can find "compounder" to develop the compound for you. These compounders mix your formulation. However, you will need to find a molder to mold your final product. 2. Or you can reach integrated molder like Ascend Sealing, we can develop compound, mold and manufacture the final product. Let us know if you have any questions.

    Dear Souza, I have to say "it depends". What characteristic you are looking for? My guess is, 10k Psi N2 it seems to be just a static seal not a dynamic seal application. So you are probably looking at compression set and force retention. Sometime material can just reach some limitation combine a proper design on seal groove/housing accompany by some plastic retainer can also improve some performance.
