Back in the day, I stumbled upon a similar technique where I would bounce the 3 track through the auxiliary through an effects processor and into the forth track. That way I would avoid the muddiness of bouncing within the system. All the instruments would be more clean and clear sounding

I need you to talk to me like I'm a 5 year old! When you said "we need to set this to INPUT here." The Tape-Off-Mic/Line is all the "INPUT". There are other bouncing tutorials that don't show what all the track's switches need to be set to. I think that us imperative in order to successfully bounce say 1,2&3 to track 4. Killer song though dude I'm diggin' it!

Another great episode!, and cool track! Question, as you bounce your tracks to the reel to reel, are you compressing? I couldn't avoid to seeing that DBX 163x compressor processing something. Thanks! :)

that's a great question! I had to go back and look at the video to remind myself. This was one of the rare moments where I was filming two pieces of content at once. I never use a compressor during mix down, but what you are seeing is me putting parallel compression on the whole mix. thanks for watching! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYygxdxynpqwl5s.html

Hey I have a question, could I use some kind of portable cassette player to bounce tape loops and make copies of songs on? If so do you have any affordable recommendations? I am new to recording on tape

There are so many things to explore, this is a nice one. Another great technique what I like to explore is what Warren Huart explains in the beginning of the video where he promotes the Rupert Neve Designs Master Bus Converter Dual-path A/D Converter & Limiter This is what he says: printing signals traditionally in analog and smashing the mic breeze very hard hitting tape super super hard.

hello! these machines aren’t perfect so unless you are doing some fancy synchronization between tape and DAW, you get the most out of portastudios by working in them. let me know if that’s unclear!

I have that Tascam 4 track reel-to-reel upstairs covered in dust! I got it cheap 25+ years ago and used it to do a couple of tunes.. nothing ever fully completed but you know that can go. I do have a question though. If you're familar with how an Echoplex will let you do sound-on-sound where the record head will record right over the top of the tape as it loops back through (sort of the original looper function) I recall my Tascam 4-track reel-to-reel could do the same. Couple of questions... 1) am I remembering this correctly that the Tascam reel-to-reel 4-track can do that... and 2) something you quite likely won't know... but I have a new Tascam Model 12... can I do the same on that? In other words.. say record something on track 1... and then without changing my mic to another track or anything else.. just record over track 1 and create an 'on the fly' composite of the first take with the 2nd take all on the same Track 1? Good video by the way...

hello! Amazing. love the 2340. I know it has the "simul-sync" switch so you can monitor from the other record heads while you lay a new track, but I don't think the machine is inherently designed to do the "sound on sound" trick like on the Echoplex. Luckily, all you need is a little aluminum foil. Put that over the erase head, and if you have a tape loop on the 2340, you'll get the sound on sound technique happening. As far as the TASCAM Model 12, I can't imagine it would have sound on sound capabilities. I don't even know if you can do an internal bounce on the machine, but I would think you should be able to. It's a great machine, but you happened to pick a tape technique that digital mixers can't do.

you can “punch in” on tape, and it’s not noticeable if there’s a space musically for you to do it. otherwise, either live with the mistake or re-record. This is one of the things i love about recording!

We all have our preferences! One of the main ethos' of this channel is "exploring limitations", and not everyone has access to a drummer, or the equipment to record drums. I also prefer a real live drummer 9 times out of 10... however, in terms of respectability, how can anyone deny the importance of "Everyday People" by Sly Stone? ...one of the most primitive drum machine sounds ever, yet the message of the song and music is as relevant today as it was when composed. Thank you for watching and listening! Much respect and goodwill 🙏🤘
