KZread is full of 20 min+ explanations of Emptiness that are lucky if they eventually get around to encapsulating it as succinctly as Geshe Lhakdor does here in a minute & a half!
For someone who has suffered abuse from his father. Calling me nothing and saying I had nothing of value. The buddist idea of emptiness always left a bad feeling in me. It as if everything my father said was right all along. Yet finally , finally someone explained it to me to understand it. Thank you sir. You put my mind at ease.

In Hinduism (tantra) emptiness (the great voidness) means something else. It's that from which everything is made and in which everything dissolves. It's called SHIVA. It's emptiness yet fullness(perfectness).

@@karan200590 thats honestly along the same lines as what he is saying, similarly to how there is no 10 without 0, there is no substance without emptiness
Concise, wonderful expression of the unity of dependent origination and emptiness! I met Geshe Lhakdor and experienced his wisdom. Yet, there is more to it: One thing more, is that the insight of causality described by the Buddha is deeper than the western common notion of causality. Second, dependent origination as emptiness is to be experienced: It is an insight, Panna in Pali, prajna in Sanskrit. It is the fruit of living the noble eightfold path: Moral life, meditation practice, and cultivation of insight. It is a lifelong practice of mindfulness and insight. Love, David Goren

Appreciate the clarification given by Geshe. One side of coin is “Emptiness “, the other “ Dependent Origination”. 缘起vs 性空。
Thank you so much Geshe Lhakdor. There are too many people claiming to have knowledge on this subject who then tries to express it intellectually, but then misses the point entirely. You seem to have a total understanding of this ultimate reality as expressed through your succinct explanation.
Absence of ego is empty. All is egoless.
That is clear as a day! Lots of people take emptiness literally and say everything is void.
Best ever explanation of Emptiness 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️😇😇😇

There is no independent origination , origination is dependant on various causes and conditions, hence absence of independent origination is Sunayana !!! 👍🙏

This is a very interesting connection with 0 from mathematics - in calculus 0 can be 1/infinity - so you can also say it is infinity reversed and the infinite universe does come out of emptiness. Very nice :) Thank you !

So is dependent existence basically saying that everything is connected. Is emptiness a state of compassion, connection to everything, etc? I'm still a little confused.

Emptiness is not a state of mind or something in itself, it is a word to conceptualize « the absence of inherent or autonomus existence » where us, ordinary beings, instictively believe that there is such inherent existence. The fact that phenomena, which we identify by mere concepts, are arising through causes and conditions, implies that they are devoid (empty) of any inherent existence. When realized directly (not through conceptual thingking), it simply comes to understanding reality correctly, as it truly is. I hope it helps.

Earlier someone told me that there remains the witness of emptiness but now as per this clip emptiness means lack of independent existence. now it seems that there can be no witness of emptiness because that witness will be depending on his experiences whose cessation he will be calling emptiness.
In Pali "Shunyatha" or emptiness menas " Attena wa attaneeyena wa" Means There is nothing as a soul(which going from here to there ,past to present ,present to future so on so forth) and nothing belongs to a soul. Thats call the emptiness.as the Bhante explained due to the existence of the dependent origination (causes and effects) There is nothing call me mine or my soul. What we experience is, the reap of what we sow in previous births.So by understanding this subtle nature of the existence.

@Flaytt744

The components that make up what assume "you are" are casually dependent. For example, the fact that you asked the question, is due to concepts that your mind dependently rely on.
@larrym2434

Something that independently exists would have no causes, no preconditions. Also, if something were caused to go out of existence, than that thing would not exist independently, because its cessation would be dependent on causes. The Buddhist theory of dependent origination indicates that nothing has independent existence. Everything comes about by causes and precondtions.
☸️☯️🙏🏻
Correct
A criticism that can be put forward against this process ontology is found in Aquinas’s modal cosmological argument that an infinite regress of contingent causes is unfounded and that a Necessary Being must exist in order to account for this chain of possible existences. As I am sympathetic to the Advaita account of reality (and due importance should be given to the fact that this school of thought incorporates a lot from Nagarjuna’s philosophy ), I can agree that at the ultimate level (Paramarthika satta), reality is empty of contingent essences (swabhava). However there must necessarily exist a substratum, which by its very essence is existence itself-Brahman, the Ground of Being.

Lukeeeeo like he said, “emptiness means to be empty of independent existence.” This means that everything is dependent on each other. For example, the floor holds us up but we rarely think of the floor in our daily lives. We depend on the floor to keep up from falling into the ground (multi-story building). I hope this helps!

Let me help you: 1. Emptiness means: things aren't independent of existence. Logically, Emptiness depends of existence. We can speak about emptiness, just about what exist. Because Emptiness is a object's propriety. Each object bring itself the emptiness. Which means: Emptiness of independent existence. Without existence, including Universs, we wont had that relation: Objects x emptiness x existence. It's the same: day without night, darkness without Light... What mean to say that emptiness depends on existence. Hope have helped you.

I could consider myself as emptiness because i am an existence dependent to other tangible objects or intangible relationships surrounding me?

Everything comes from something so it does not exist independently in it self. However we look at things as if they were independent. So it is empty. But you need to see it and feel it not just intellectually understand it.

Emptiness cannot happen if other exist . Even Buddhist know that there is path of relative and path of absolute . Interdependence exist because it rest on emptiness

I'm not nothing in sense of emptiness. I'm creative nothing which from I create myself.
It is not philosophy.It is very advanced Science .Nagarjuna was great Indian Scientist.
So basically 0+0=0 you WOULDN'T say 0+0=nothing became ZERO is still something. So to put that into our existence. Emptiness= Form and form= emptiness. We still exist but we're still empty because its no such thang as self??
Where is the evidence?
@subhajit201

In this case there will be pratyaksh pramana (direct evidence) for which u have to meditate yourself or shabda pramana (verbal evidence) that is trust him and his words.
Only way to achieve this state is through salvia divinorum or ayahuasca.
I got a comprehensive Pali dictionary, which I plan to start reading. I don't think rapping in Pali is appropriate, and certainly there's no market for that.
Huh?
In Hinduism (tantra) emptiness (the great voidness) means something else. It's that from which everything is made, in which everything dissolves and through which everything is known. It's called SHIVA. It's emptiness yet fullness(perfectness).
@SusanHopkinson

Those are different words to describe the same phenomenon. Because things have no inherent existence, they appear to emerge and eventually disappear, because of a coincidence of conditions. Beware of the implication of creation of something from nothing, ( the Tantrik and Vedantic wording can lead to confusion on this point) - neither Tantra nor Buddhism says there is something where nothing existed previously. Emptiness (shunyata) implies fullness as well - full of potential, full of the aggregates coming together in space and time that lead to the appearance of something permanent, but which inevitably disappears because it was never a separate thing anyway. In other words, pūrma and shunya are pointing to the same thing

Indeed, Shiva is the void beyond the void!
If Buddha believed in reincarnation, then there cannot be no existence of the Atma (Soul). Because in reincarnation, the body does not go through (as u look different in next life), the mind doesn’t go through (as u cannot remember your previous lives), what goes through is the soul, born with a new body and mind. Now, if u deny the existence of soul, then there is no reincarnation, as it is the soul that carries forward to the next life. Or if there is no soul, there is no reincarnation, in which case Buddha contradicts himself.
form=feeling=perception= fabrications=consciousness=0/insubstantial
Geshe Devil is the God?
0 has value Null has none. Causality is an innate trait of human beings to understand this world in our own way. Rather than defining Sunyata, it is better to know what that is insisting us to know this type of concept.

Very bad explanation of zero. Why would there be no 10 or 100 without number 0? Because in decimal system using arabic numerals it so happens to write a number 10 you need digit 0? He mistakes number with digit. In duodecimal system or in any other system number 10 would not consist of digits 1 and 0, there would be separate digit for it, even in decimal system there could be completely different symbol to write number 10. It's purely arbitrary notation. It's like saying there would be not egg without letters "e" and "g". This shows lack of understanding from his part.
You are saying exact opposite of what you want to say
Same as Brahman in Advaita Vedanta.

From the outset, it might look the same concept. But when going to the subtle meaning of emptiness, there is a huge difference. The meaning goes so subtle, that even in Buddhism, 4 schools emerged based on this topic.
