"Oval" is a more general term. Ellipses are special kinds of ovals. And circles are a special kind of ellipses. More here: "In mathematics, an ellipse is a plane curve surrounding two focal points, such that for all points on the curve, the sum of the two distances to the focal points is a constant. There is no precise definition of an oval in mathematics. It is said to resemble the outer of an egg. ... Ellipse is a mathematically defined shape whereas an oval is not so. An ellipse has atleast two axes of symmetry but an ellipse has atleast one
