    Depending on the project, I will use linear regulators or those Buck converters (switching). I do like the versatility of the Buck converters and as to be expected, some are better than others. Most of them come out of China and are as cheap as they can get and will have high ripple. There are some of the "better" ones, where you can adjust voltage, current max and sensing. Some of those have built in, a LC filter to help reduce ripple. What might be a fund video would be to use one of those cheap Buck converters (like the one in the video) and show how to calculate the values of an LC filtering circuit and perhaps even how to calculate the windings to build our own coils. There are some calculators out there on the internet, but so far, most of them seem to be for advanced users who already have a good basis in electronics. Sometimes, for newer people, dumbing it down can be helpful.

    yes, exactly, those cheap regulators come out of china. those ripples are because of low frequency they work at. in my opinion, it is better to use original parts in sensitive projects instead of using LC filters.

    I wish the designers of equipment using switching regulators would pay more attention to radiated RFI, I like to listen to SW and MW AM broadcast radio stations but the number of devices in my house using switching regulators makes this almost imposable, they vary from laptop power packs, phone chargers, led lighting supplies and computer equipment they all radiate frequencies at enough power to drown out all but the strongest stations. If I go round the house and unplug all the devices using these cheap PSU's the radio reception is perfect, I know most people stream content and use DAB these days but it is a pity so many of the frequencies from long wave up and approaching VHF are becoming unusable in the average home environment.

    There are some kind of linear or non-switching boost regulation circuits around: bootstrap circuits.

  • @newmonengineering

    @newmonengineering

    Bootstrap is still switching. It requires an oscillator to push additional voltage into a capacitor through a diode. It's not linear.

    @@XEMC switched capacitor PS is a switched method. Bootstrapping is not actively switched. Bootstapped audio amplifiers simply use a capacitor and a resistor to exceed the power rail voltage for the driver stage by use of the audio output voltage swing. But it is also possible to generate a stable voltage level by use of diodes and Zener diodes or on top linear voltage regulation.
