What is congestion pricing?

Vehicles entering the Congestion Relief Zone - local streets and avenues south of and including 60 St in Manhattan - will be charged a toll. Toll rates will vary by type of vehicle and time of day. Passenger vehicles and motorcycles will only be charged once per day. For more info please visit: congestionreliefzone.mta.info/

We need to make sure that the money achieved from this actually goes directly towards modernizing the subway and replacing old equipment with new equipment that would do way more good than those overpriced extensions. Kathy Hochul better not pocket this money. In other words, we need to be able to hold the MTA accountable. Furthermore, drivers are gonna be really mad when they need to understand that they have to pay the cost of the damages, they caused when driving into the city, and consumers need to pay the full cost of goods. Congestion pricing brings out brutal honesty and I don't think anyone is going to take it well even if it is a logical policy.

The MTA installed new equipment on Queens Blvd Line and it is still garbage. I don't see this as a benefit because the MTA is poorly mismanaged. Not to mention that this will not reduce congestion across the entire city but spread it to other parts of the city. Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx will see more cars and worse pollution. Frankly I an hoping for the lawsuits to succeed because this isn't good for the environment and I don't trust the MTA to handle the money properly as the keep overspending on projects all the time

My one complaint about this program is that no consideration was given to the effects of the toll on trucks and thus the price of consumer goods. Over 90% of goods in NYC arrive by truck, the most of any city in North America. They should be exempt. Plus a portion of the money should go towards hiring more cops to crack down on fare evasion and unruly behavior in the subway. If driving and transit both suck, people will just choose not to come to the city if they can help it.

I'm sorry for being the pessimist, but this 'congestion pricing' plan will not change much of anything... Oh, it may (in the immediate future) do what it purports, but the truth of the matter is that in 5 years, the subways will still be the way they are today - if not, worse. One must understand - the NYC subway system is the oldest subway in the world. They are not going to add any new lines, down time will get worse as ridership ticks up (as an immediate result of this plan), and you can bet that within my 5 year prediction, they will raise the price to ride on the subway/buses at least once. The subways will remain a shelter for homeless - so you can bet that the smell of excrement and unbathed individuals will not go anywhere. Service will be cut sometime between now and then (at least on two lines) and with MTA police cuts, safety will definitely be an issue. I'll put it to you this way... The tracks and tunnels are already there to allow trains from Penn Station to the East Side (Grand Central), but they refuse to allow those tracks to be used - even though this would make life a lot easier for commuters from either side of the Hudson access to the opposite side. Additionally, I highly doubt that this is anything more than a money-grab. Being born and raised in the Bronx, I've seen enough of this in my 54 years of life to know when more of the same is imminent.

IMO this doesn't go nearly far enough. We've had 100 years of "Carrot" in the form of comprehensive public transit, now it's time for "Stick". This toll should be pegged to the AQI number, updated hourly. AQI of 100? That'll be $100 to drive into the city. Don't like it? Leave your ridiculous car in the suburbs.

You’re right. The toll should be increased tenfold to let drivers know and fully deter vehicles from entering Manhattan

You’re right, the congestion price needs to be dramatically increased to fully deter car brains from entering the city
