What is Auroville?
Auroville is a universal township in the making for a population of up to 50,000 people from around the world.
How did Auroville begin?
The concept of Auroville - an ideal township devoted to an experiment in human unity - came to the Mother as early as the 1930s. In the mid 1960s the concept was developed and put before the Govt. of India, who gave their backing and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 1966 UNESCO passed a unanimous resolution commending it as a project of importance to the future of humanity, thereby giving their full encouragement.
Why Auroville?
The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity - in diversity. Today Auroville is recognised as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness, also concerned with - and practically researching into - sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.
When did Auroville start?
On 28th February 1968 some 5,000 people assembled near the banyan tree at the centre of the future township for an inauguration ceremony attended by representatives of 124 nations, including all the States of India. The representatives brought with them some soil from their homeland, to be mixed in a white marble- clad, lotus-shaped urn, now sited at the focal point of the Amphitheatre. At the same time the Mother gave Auroville its 4-point Charter.
Where is Auroville?
Auroville is located in south India, mostly in the State of Tamil Nadu (some parts are in the State of Puducherry), a few kilometres inland from the Coromandel Coast, approx 150 kms south of Chennai (previously Madras) and 10 kms north of the town of Puducherry.
Who are the Aurovilians?
They come from some 59 nations, from all age groups (from infancy to over eighty, averaging around 30), from all social classes, backgrounds and cultures, representing humanity as a whole. The population of the township is constantly growing, but currently stands at around 2,500 people, of whom approx one-third are Indian.
Peace Area
At the centre of the township lies the Peace Area, comprising the Matrimandir and its gardens, the amphitheatre with the Urn of Human Unity that contains the soil of 121 nations and 23 Indian states, and the project of a lake to help create an atmosphere of calm and serenity and to serve as a groundwater recharge area.
Cultural Zone
Planned on a 93-hectare area, situated to the east of the Peace Area, the Cultural Zone will be a site for applied research in education and artistic expression. Facilities for cultural, educational, art and sports activities will be located in this zone.

@@sairasairasaira757 What is going on? I have visited this place more than 20 years ago. Not my cup of tea because I am not religious or spiritual. Seemed to me kind of extended holiday, gap year place for those who have money. Poor locals not welcome except as workers.
Am at Auroville currently. It’s a nice enough place however one thing I have noticed is it is mostly locals doing all the hard work and non Indians doing meditation, art etc.How is this equality ? You never see non Indians and Indians communicate unless it is transactional.Of the non Indians it’s mostly caucasians and no black or Asians.Ofcourse there are some exceptions but does this not go against the very philosophy on which this place was founded.Worth a visit but personally I would prefer Pondicherry or other places in India.Very hipster vibe here.On the bright side you have good organic food, nice beaches, cool guest houses with lots of greenery and matrmandir dome.

It is so simple when we really think about it, right? Create a community where everybody's basic needs are met: food, water, shelter, healthcare. Remove the stress of labor-for-income and remove as much need for money and competitive business and you have a community of about 3,000 very happy, healthy people! We can do that everywhere. We just had to follow a similar formula. But many countries and communities have some reorienting to do!
I found my dream place❤️

No potential, no opportunity, no potential, no hope? There are certain fundamentals that many of these "experiments" often overlook. The "drum major" instinct that resides in so many of us is vital to our existence and our development as a species. The need, the drive to produce more from less, to provide for an ever increasing population; to cope with novel viruses and diseases, these all require a fundamental inner thrust forward as a community and society. That can't be overlooked. It's true we have excesses; injustice and inequality reign supreme. Yet the benefits, I would suggest, do ultimately far out way any negative connotations that may exist and are of fundamental importance to the future of humanity.

Very nice video and beautiful place! I like the joy and your natural being :) Brought a tear to my eyes, when you had that sound bath and went for all the small instruments for yourself *)
i just heard of auroville lately and was checking out their website a bit and looking on youtube what there is and found your video. love it! love your energy!! and i so want to go there myself!! i think this could really be a great place to live! many many great things like taking the focus off of money and on the human. love for humans, nature, equality are things that come to my mind when i think about this place. hopefully travelling will be back to normal soon and i can go there soon and check it out in real not just virtually! sending much love! :)
David is a traveller from Israel. He wanted to volunteer in Auroville just like other travellers do but he cannot afford it. “It is quite stupid actually. Money is taken from young people to volunteer in the various units. The volunteers have to pay while volunteering as well. But he or she doesn’t get paid to do. There is a lot of money in Auroville. But where does it all go? I don’t know. I am leaving in a few days and as much as I would love to stay here. I can’t afford it.”

I was there 2019 for two weeks. It was no problem to visit the park and enter the Matrimandir. I was inside it twice in the two weeks and i even meditated in the chambers and the main hall. It's a calm place and it's good and intelligent, that there is a reservation process. Otherwise it wouldn't be a calm place to meditate anymore. And the park and the Matrimandir is mainly for Aurovillians, the residents to relax and meditate and not primarly for tourists. It's good, like it is now.
Wish you could experience the dark side of Auroville as well and show that to world as well!

I agree, but to get there takes much more time and effort, you would also have to ask the hundreds or possibly even thousands of people who have put all their faith, effort and financial resources into the community, to eventually realize that things are not what they seem to even long term visitors. Not all that shines is gold, and where there is light there is also darkness.
