Hair Loss (Alopecia)
Symptoms and Causes
Hair loss, medically referred to as alopecia, is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and genders. There are several types of hair loss, each with its own causes, symptoms, and treatments. Here are some of the key types of hair loss:
Androgenetic Alopecia (Male/Female Pattern Baldness):
This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting both men and women. It is primarily caused by a combination of genetics and hormones. In men, it often leads to a receding hairline and bald spots, while in women, it typically results in thinning of the hair on the crown of the scalp.
Alopecia Areata:
This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to sudden hair loss. It often causes round, smooth patches of hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body. Hair can regrow after a period of time, but the condition can recur.
Telogen Effluvium:
This type of hair loss occurs when a significant number of hair follicles enter the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle simultaneously. It is often triggered by factors such as stress, illness, hormonal changes, or certain medications. The hair loss is usually temporary and reversible.
Anagen Effluvium:
This type of hair loss results from damage to hair follicles during the active growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle. It is often caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer treatment. Hair loss can be extensive but is usually temporary; hair tends to regrow after the treatment ends.
Traction Alopecia:
Traction alopecia is caused by repetitive pulling or tension on the hair, often due to tight hairstyles like braids, ponytails, or hair extensions. Over time, this can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss in the affected areas.
Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia):
In this type, inflammation and destruction of hair follicles lead to permanent hair loss. The cause can be various conditions, such as lichen planopilaris, discoid lupus erythematosus, or folliculitis decalvans.
