WHAT IS A TIE COAT AND HOW DOES IT WORK WITH EPOXY AND GELCOAT?

Sometimes projects go smooth as butter and others they completely backfire. This time the failure was on me, but at least I'm pretty sure I know what the issue was lol :-) So scraping it all back off and starting over is the only option. Little frustrating but it is what it is. Learning experience right?!??
Any guesses on what I need to do differently to make this work??

Andy, despite what everyone says about your current process, you are the guru with the 200,000 plus followers. We are behind your techniques and procedures. You are living the life I want. I have watched most all of your videos and have enjoyed watching your process change over time when new tools and products are discovered. The addition of your daughter’s voice is the best. I have a 17 year old daughter. It makes me remember her voice. Keep up the good work. I hope your shoulders are doing well.

I helped a good friend repair his cap rail on his 32 foot sedan. We used TB 2:1 with f/g cloth and fillers. I wanted epoxy for it strength and tooling properties. We scrubed with water each build up to achieve the shape. Once complete we use TB Total Protect and were very successful. We put 2 coats of TB Total Protect and waited 7 days for full cure time. It was summer and we had 85 to 90 plus temperatures. It appears dry same day but not patience is critical to marry the polyester gel coat over epoxy. We coated with 3 light coats of Total Boat Gelcoat about 2ml thick. We wet sanded and compounded and had very good results. As a general rule any epoxy takes about 7 days to post cure, Patience is key.

Great commentary and it's definitely accurate. My first project was a large hardtop bimini and I intermixed these materials. Gelcoat cured over epoxy laminating resin just fine, but not over any fairing compound. Epoxy barrier coat (nice $$ addition) and gelcoat it worked fine! Different formulas different results for sure.

Andy, do you think letting the fairing compound cure longer (as in several days to a week) before gel coating would have made a difference? Similarly, perhaps waiting at least 48 hours before gel coat application over the Total Protect would work better.

Andy, thank you for all the great videos. I have a bit of an off topic question concerning paint. You have noted in several videos that topcoat paint is for above the water line and that bottom coat paints are for below the water line. What if I do not want an anti fouling bottom? I would like the bottom paint to look just like the top coat paint. I looked on Alexseal website and I cannot find any paint especially for under the water line. What paint should I use? Thank you.

I’m going to suggest that you did not let the epoxy tie coat completely cure. I have finished off repairs with gelcoat over epoxy plenty of times and never had an issue BUT it’s essential that the epoxy has totally, completely and thoroughly cured, ideally I’ll wait 2-3 days before sanding to get a key for the gel to get a mechanical bond.

Some you need a heavier grit paper too. I've seen primer go onto amine free epoxy and act like it's been spread on a wet or silicone surface as I'd only used 400 grit Mirlon pads. It was a 2 pack epoxy primer and refused to stick properly on west systems till id used 240 or heavier. Went on like a dream and flowed out perfectly to anything sanded with 120-190grit.. put it on anything lighter than that it stone wall refused to work.

Hope you find out exactly what is wrong with your shoulder. And then start the healing process. As frustrating as it can be. Do not try to rush rehab. I know that is easy for folks to say. Keeping a positive attitude was very difficult for impatient me. But it got me to buy my first boat with an engine. But that has led to the slippery slope of a "bigger" boat...... with the transom that I should rebuild.

I got most of it off but it was applied over chop strand so theres still gelcoat in all the little nooks and crannies. Its been about a week sense i put on the gel coat so i dont know if that makes it harder to remove. Ive been wiping it down with acetone and that gets a little but not the gelcoat in the nooks and crannies. Is there someway to remove it. Would a pressure washer work? Would it be ok if theres still some left, could i gelcoat over this or do i need to completely remove all of it? Please help 😨.

Yeah but thats so you don't streak and pull the non fully cured paint about. We know how to get around that mate with light sanding and wet sanding. Automotive 1k primer tells you to wait 2 weeks before sanding mate but you can sand it an hour later if you have heat and proper wet sanding paper like the mirka or Kingspor stuff.

Given the age of the shell a good sanding and cleaning would be my first step. After that is talk to your local paint supplier. I'd probably go with a spray on epoxy based paint used for fiberglass automobile and motorcycle bodies. Rolling seems like it's going to take a lot of extra sanding and multiple coats. The paints I mentioned are mainly for spray guns as they're on the expensive side. That said a lot of guys roll and tip there boat coatings so I guess it's an option.

I made all these same mistakes earlier this year with repairs to my boat deck. I used epoxy and Total fair, then applied gelcoat. At first I thought I forgot to catalyze the gelcoat so I cleaned the surface then applied gelcoat, making sure to catalyze. It still didn't cure again so now I did the research and discovered my mistake. I cleaned the surface again and applied a barrier coat before gelcoating again. It cured this time but I'm not happy with the final product. Looks like I will be re-gelcoating the deck again next spring.

i dont know where the screw up was but maybe you got confused with the cans and used the gelcoat instead of the tie coat. easy to miss, because maybe it is also white. about the gelcoat application over the fairing compound: i wasnt expecting it to not cure since the fairing had at least one day to cure and was hard enough to be sanded. i was expecting secondary bonding issues being that polyester over epoxy is generally a "no-no" but the reverse is actually better than polyester over polyester.

Proper epoxy will bond to anything better than anything. I've repaired a glass fuel level dial on an old Aladin Blue Flame heater with west systems and its lasted 10yr in horrible hot then cold conditions. When I say hot I mean 200+ deg and its still fine after a decade and people say epoxy stick to anything but glass, no it sticks to glass too I guarantee you it does.

Ohh ohh Andy forgot the catalyst🤣 BTW I have water based epoxy paint here in the UK and it actually takes 3-6days to skin dry, that's the norm for it and the longer it takes apparently the better the bond is. Also we don't get epoxy "fanboys" here in UK forums Andy, it's usually people arguing that poly or Vinyl is as good as epoxy on things like transoms that will cause a pointless argument as factually the proper epoxy like west systems utterly spanks poly and vinyl on transoms its not even close the difference, the shrinkage on large transoms for a start can need a second repair less than 3 weeks after laying it and if you don't get the transom strength back that's lost to modern marine ply being nowhere near as well laminated as the old stuff then your big heavy motor will hanging an inch or two away from where it should be unless you bulk up on the layers, then it becomes a guessing game. Proper epoxy you don't have that issue so it's not really up for dispute, epoxy is the clear winner mate no iffs or buts so I'm suprised anyone even argues about it.

i guess you did,nt use a rough enough grit on the sanding disc probably 180 ,instead of 40 or 80 grit i,ve had this problem getting gel coat to harden on fresh 10 day epoxy lay up hard to use an epoxy primer on it with a rough grit finish, normally tie coat is used to seal old antifoul if its decent smoothness saves removing old seal with tie cost barrier or if a single pack paint has been used put tiecoat on and then it lets you use a two part paint or poly gel coat

I dont know either as all the UK forums I'm on nobody argues about it they know epoxy is superior but not always needed or the easiest to work with. Most guys I know who are strictly epoxy admit they do it as an extra safety barrier and if the customer wants the extra expense, which in the UK most people want proper epoxy fixes they specifically ask for it. I'd say there was more guys on the forums denying epoxy is the superior product because they personally used some brand of poly or vinyl that did the job. It's only later they come on asking why their transom repair cracked within 3weeks because of shrinkage do all the epoxy guys come on and say "we told you so" I mean I use all 3 types of epoxy on different areas but I'm not silly, I'm not going to argue that proper epoxy isn't the best. It clearly is so I don't get the "fanboy" bit he's talking about. They are factually correct so?

I am new to this. I have never done any fiberglass work. My hopes are to learn how to do it and do it correctly. I can appreciate an honest mistake. I pay attention to details very well. Some call me anal retentive but that is ok.Makes me better at whatever i set my mind to. So this is my guess of what went wrong. I saw that you mixed your tie coat up but I didn't see it applied. Did you forget to apply it first? i saw the two cups at the bottom of the waste barrel. I am guessing you sanded the base epoxy coat to prep the surface but then maybe forgot to apply intermediate coat before applying gel coat. Just my humble guess. Second theory, Do you mix the gel coat with the tie coat for a chemical reaction to get it to bond?
