What is a Russian Scion and how does it work?

Beekeepers! Tired of your bees swarming? A Russian Scion is easy to build, and is an "insurance policy" to catch your own bees after they swarm, but before they find a new permanent home. Unlike a swarm trap, this is more of a swarm magnet, to attract bees right after they swarm, so that the beekeeper has easy access to the swarm. The Russian Scion is an easy to build DIY!!!

    That's all very interesting but after you catch the swarm you still need to transfer them to a bee hive. Seems to me that the standard bee hive trap is better in the long run. What do you feel makes this better than the normal bee hive trap? Please comment.

    This is not to catch a wild swarm, but serves has a landing spot if your own bees from your own hive swarm. Typically, a swarm will congregate nearby the hive they just swarmed and stay there for several hours before moving on. The scion is more attractive to them than a random landing place and then you can lower your scion into a box or hive body.

    Yes, caught 1 swarm. I’ve only had 3 swarms from my hives in 7 years, so not bad percentage.

    I don’t understand why you would use screening why not just coat the plywood?

  • @WhistleThicket

    There are so many different ways to do it. Just plain plywood, or some use burlap. I used the screen so I could dip it in my old melted comb and propolis. Didn’t have a lot of old comb so thought screen was better ?

    Did scion work?

  • @WhistleThicket

    @WhistleThicket

    3 ай бұрын

    It did! The first swarm that happened from my hives landed right on the branch next to it. I haven’t had any swarms from my hives in about 3 years due to splitting my hives, so haven’t had another swarm since. Remember a scion isn’t really to catch wild swarms like a swarm trap. The purpose is to be a landing pad right when one of your own hives swarms. Usually they gather as a group somewhere close to the hives before moving on. Having the scion opens up an attractive place they are more likely to land and stick around longer and hopefully your scion is accessible! Doing a new scion video soon ! Good luck
