I finished chemotherapy for breast cancer 4 months ago. I’ve been complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain to my doctors, thinking it was the port catheter jabbing my heart. They blew me off. Traveling home on the highway this weekend I hit a deer head on. Felt the pain again and was transported to the hospital. That’s where they found 2 clots in my lungs. Started me on heparin and now I’m on Eliquis pills. So the deer saved my life! Killed my new car but saved my life! I’m grateful! But when I go in for my follow up appointment he’s going to hear my wrath! They should have taken me seriously and found this sooner!

I had not one but two pulmonary embolism. No leg pain whatsoever just came out of the blue. I was so short of breath I did not think I would make it to the ER. I was working 12 hour shifts as a nurse so very active. I ended up in respiratory failure and nearly did not make it. On elequis for a long time. They ended my 39 year nursing career as I'm now disabled. I still need oxygen and get winded easily. I'm so grateful to be alive. They are a scary thing !

I had multiple pulmonary embolisms six weeks ago, to the point, the doctors could not even tell me how many they found. I, too, am on Eliquis. I am 47, and with my career and pretty sedentary and also had smoked for 35 years (which I quit immediately, because I am not fond of dying) and they say smoking also causes increased RBC count, in addition to being sedentary. Every day I am so afraid that I will have that stabbing chest feeling again, but I am so grateful to still be here among the living. After a month of being more active, and stopping smoking, my o2 levels went from ~90% to 99-100%. I still have 3 clots in my right leg, but for some reason they are not removing them, and it gives me crazy anxiety.
I suffered two PEs in 2021. I’d never smoked and was in peak condition due to being a professional athlete. My blood pressure was 72/40 and I struggled to breathe so badly. It was excruciating to try to take a deep breath. The scariest moments of my life.

I can relate to this after suffering with a DVT, as to which multiple blood clots traveled to the lungs resulting in Pulmonary Embolism back in 2015. I am on Warfarin medication for life. I do get quite anxious and short of breath at times but apart from that everything is good and I'm living life as normal. Just wanted to leave this message to wish you all the best for good health, wellness, and happiness for the future as a survivor of a very unpleasant and scary experience.

@@michael7286 Thank you.
As Survivor of unprovoked Acute Extensive Pulmonary Embolism- thanks for this video. But I’d like to add that I had NO symptoms of the DVT in my calf besides a very slight “ charley horse” feeling in my calf- like a sore muscle- nothing to be concerned about. This very slight symptom happened the day before a piece the clot broke off, travelled through my heart causing incredible chest pain which literally folded me over, convulsive coughing as my body tried to dislodge the offending clots and pain in my sternum and right shoulder & then the realization that I wasn’t breathing- well- I WAS breathing mechanically lungs were expanding and contracting but the oxygen couldn’t get out of my lungs because new blood couldn’t get in/ out due to the extensive clots so essentially I was being smothered while still breathing. I thought maybe my septic lid had cracked and I was in a place where the oxygen was displaced by other gasses. I took all my night and moved away from where I was to try and get air. & I did The only thing one can do when they are dying - which I was- most certainly dying. I PRAYED. Please God let me get air. Please don’t let my die in my backyard & no one will even know until the vultures start circling. According to ( very undereported) reported statistics Of every 3 people who have a pulmonary embolism one will DIE IMMEDIATELY - and of the remaining who seek and receive treatment another 18% die soon after from complications. More often than not the heart tissue is stretched out from the back pressure of it trying to pump blood through closed off vessels. The damage done to ones lungs by PE takes months / years to recover from and that’s As the body breaks down the clots ( if and when it actually does) Sir, I MUST ask you to clarify that Anti-coagulants ( blood thinners) DO NOT break down existing clots - they only prevent the existing clots from enlarging and prevent new ones from forming. It is fully up to ones own body to identify & slowly break down and carry away the already existing clots. There are, in severe cases drugs called clot busters which can break up clots but the risks versus reward of clot busting drugs is not always good odds. People should know that blood thinners DONT break up existing clots. Recovery - for the lucky ones who survive- from PE is long and arduous and sometimes goes 2 steps forward & 3 steps back.

I'm sorry to hear about your story. Mine was similar, but triggered by long drives for a project at work, and found out after the DVT and PE (which I had for 5 weeks, luckily it didn't kill me) that I have a prothrombin mutation, which my father does and son also has. My father had the same fate as I had, survived and on Warfarin. I'm on Eliquis, and now wear compression socks. I had extensive bilateral PE's, was put on Heparin for 2 days then Eliquis since. I fully recovered in 3 months, and back to my level of fitness as I was before the event, which also likely contributed to surviving this. I just turned 52 years old, and hope that this never happens again!

My estranged father passed back in September 2021 of one of these. I was just now given the most vague and basic of answers from the coroner who seriously dragged ass on the investigation. He lived in Bermuda as off grid as he could so that has further complicated my ability to figure out just what happened. The only other detail was that he had traces of cocain in his system but they could not quantify how much or whether or not it impeded his chances of surviving.
I'm bed ridden wheelchair bond and started getting shortness of breath even when talking.. also massive chest pain..and Tachycardia episodes that are getting more aggressive more frequent..my heartbeat BPM can be 90 to 250 at rest.. I did chest xray which was clear.. I did echo and holter..i did CT scan with contrast but I'm scared it's not ckear due to my body movements.. I've had 10 brain surgeries and numerous medical procedures..idk.. whatever it is i want it to stop 😢

My Dr just told me that I have veinous insufficiency and she wants to do surgery on both legs. She wants to create clots in my deep veins so that the blood will redirect to healthier veins. I am afraid of possible pulmonary embolisms after the surgery. How much of a concern should I have with getting this procedure and can it, well, kill me at some point? Thank you for your videos.Very helpful..
I had 2 major surgeries in 2019 with prolonged ICU stay, 4 months in hospital. I wasn't expected to survive. I started having difficulty breathing early Dec 22 almost 3 months ago. Just tested positive for blot clot this eve. I have been given blood thinners and have to go back tomorrow for scan to find the clot. They expect it to be in my lungs as I have small plural effusions. Hopefully it is only a small clot that can be relieved easily.
I was just diagnosed with a PE and now I'm trying to quit smoking, because im terrified. I also diagnosed with Covid.
I've had two PEs so far. One in 2018 (or rather, many small clots) and one massive one in 2020. I figure it'll probably be a third that kills me since I can't manage my warfarin properly but I've long since made my peace and the idea doesn't bother me anymore.

I got my doctors to change my thinners. I was having too many problems on the first one given to me. It’s worth a try
I went into the hospital with 6 DVTs in my arms. Four days later, I felt like death. I went to a different hospital and was diagnosed with two PEs in my right lung, and one in my left lung. How weak I've become and difficulty breathing, I had to get a walker and a shower chair because of me falling. When they diagnosed me with three PEs, they said I lit up like a Christmas tree, filled with clots in other areas of my body. I'm on blood thinners. This has put me out of work, sadly, because of my limited mobility.

My mother just passed away from this, she went to the doctors four days before and they obviously didn't pick it up, even though she had a history of lung infections and a cancer scare in the passed but supposedly It was being monitored and ok???? She did smoke for many years. She just thought it was another chest infection, Just Really wish older people didn't go to just doctors all the time because they don't usually take them seriously when something is wrong and maybe they don't know how to expalin the symptoms properly.???
Hi! What would our approach be to treatment as a physio? (If someone has or has a suspected PE that is)
@ClinicalPhysio
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew! Step 1: Tell medics for investigations to confirm PE. Medical treatment would start. Step 2: Wait for medics to give you all clear. Early management may well just be chest check and breathing exercises and breathing management as pain allows to maintain chest. Simple stuff only in majority of cases - I personally would not be happy with manual therapy. Simple lower limb movements in bed to maintain circulation. Step 3: Once given clearance by medics, gradually progress mobility to allow for circulation, chest expansion and recovery. Confirmation from medical team crucial here. Only other point - PE patients could be quite sick, so once again, constant communication with MDT

@@ClinicalPhysio Hello, thanks for the quick reply that’s amazing!! I’ve always been taught this too, and there doesn’t seem to be much literature around Ambulation of patients with PEs/suspected PEs although there are two great articles for DVTs that I found really interesting, and don’t see why this can’t be applied to PEs (permitting the patient is comfortable of course) : 1. ‘Ambulation after DVT: A Systematic Review’ Anderson et. al. 2009 2. Bed rest vs Early Ambulation with Standard Anticoagulation in management of DVT: A Meta-Analysis Liu et al 2015 Also considering Virchows Triad in the development of a DVT, immobility is a key causal factor! I’m yet to see anything on the risks of early Ambulation/mobility - although there’s a lot more to show the risks of not mobilising! What are your thoughts? I’m currently on a frailty placement and this has come up so! Matt
@ClinicalPhysio
2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewfinney4040 Hey Matt! No I totally agree - the evidence for DVT is definitely shifting. For me the biggest difference is the effect that PE’s have on the lungs thus affecting SaO2 and paO2 because if they drop significantly during our mobility we could have a much bigger problem. Happy to be shown if evidence says otherwise though!!

How did you get diagnosed
I got them from an ovarian cancer tumour - but in my case it saved my life as it was leg pain that sent me to the GP which meant that my ovarian and uterine cancer was diagnosed at Stage 1 rather than most who get OC who are only diagnosed at Stage 3 or 4. Although I did have a problem when the clots were being broken up ! an undiagnosed hole in my heart meant a piece of clot travelled across the heart and to my eye, causing partial sight loss - thankfully temporarily. I was on injected blood thinners until my cancer op (which was delayed by 3 scary months bc of the clots) and after the op for six months after. Since then, no problems.

No. I too have asthma. Asthma is a restriction of air through the bronchial tubes due to inflammation. PE's are clots which form in the arteries within the lungs. You can have the same symptoms initially as asthma, shortness of breath, but the tachycardia/high heart rate was something I've never had with asthma, only with the PE.
So,....no.matter what I do...I am at fault?.....We will never be safe again.
