Thank you so much for this. I now understand why my stator got burned. Replacing it and changing back my lights to the normal lights it has .Thanks again.

I enjoyed your very clear explanation and delivery. I was looking to learn about troubleshooting an application that doesn’t have any additional electrical draws besides the very basic of fuel injection and battery charging. Cheers

I suppose that a person could hook up load like a discharged battery and check the voltage drop. 😂

You guys are great raconteurs. And you do impart some good technical tidbits in there too. I tend to not modify my vehicles much. As a general rule, everything just has some safety margin, but not that much. So if you change one thing, you've got to change everything else in the chain. So if you could put in a higher wattage stator, and it fit and didn't produce any more heat to dissipate, you would need, like you mention, a higher current regulator and rectifier, and probably a bigger gauge wire too. There may even be a fuse or circuit breaker, or just a fusible wire in there for protection that would need to be increased. And a bigger battery which wouldn't fit. I'm an engineer, and it seems like this sort of thing should be obvious to engineers, but I have a colleague who is putting an LS motor in a jeep, and claims his Dana 40 is plenty. Even with the bigger diameter wheels and tires. I imagine that the some sort of thing happens with two wheeled vehicles.

Thank for your highly informative and helpful video. My bike's stator just got toasted and I was left stranded. I had nothing else extra hooked to the battery but the stator just died. I am replacing it with the regulator (big bill). My question is, I bought this (Air Horn that is 12V 150DB). Is this safe to connect to the new battery that will be charged by the new Stator and Regulator I just purchased?

Check to see how many Amps the new stator is going to put out, and see what your bike draws, if you google it, you can find out how many additional Amps you can draw from accessories. As a ADV rider, we have to find that out, to see how much heater gear you can run. Some people will put over sized stators which can provide a higher Amp output to run higher drawing things like heated Jackets, pants seats etc. So if you are adding an air horn, I'd see how many Amps it (or the compressor if it has one) draws and if it's in a safe zone for your bike, you should be cool.

I know you love PC800's Phil. That being said, I'd like to add some heated grips and Fog/aux lights. Should I be concerned about excess wattage from these two items? Can using LED lighting in the headlight/taillight/dash lights reduce wattage enough to add these extra farkle? Listener of the podcast since 2014

Is a motorcycle stator pretty much the same thing as an automotive alternator, or does it work very differently?

  • @cccous

    Pretty much

  • @Perry_dAccard

Pretty much. The stator is the part with the coils on it, then there are magnets in a rotor rotating (who knew) around it. In a motorcycle that rotor often serves as a flywheel too. A car alternator is the same combinaton of rotor and stator but as a belt driven auxilary unit with no secondary purpose.

Hello ,you do great work, can i ask something.....motorbike is HONDA TRANSALP 700 and burn the stator conector to reg. rectifier ,i fix it with three separate ones cylindrical type conectors, is normal the stator cables (3 yelows) to reg. rectifier to be warm (about 140-150"F) when the motor is runing...thank you...

If your rectifier/regulator is the shunt type, (I think it is,) the Shunt type means excess power gets shorted back to the stator. So those wires are always going to be pretty warm if not hot to the touch. I hope that helps some. Also, I LOVE the Trans Alp. I have it's brother the Africa Twin! Love me some Honda!

Thank you for the response John, the reg.rectif. is the FH 008 EF ,likely shindengen, I think so is mosfet technology..I try to anderstant some basic electrical principles on motorbikes to be able to solve the problem of heating the cables (if it is indeed a malfunction) but my electrical knowledge are limited (my knowledge are mechanics). I also measured the cables temperature on the same bike of a friend and it worked 20" F lower, thanks again John you are a good person...@@MotoStoriesandmore

It's a risk. But we have had good luck with them. I think we are 9 for 10 and the one was bad when we got it and it was replaced. I will say, don't buy no name belts. Those never work properly, I have a few videos showing when I found that out. 😒

If the engine is carbonated, you would need to jet the carbs properly and make sure the engine is not running too lean, or if it has EFI, then you make need to adjust the FI map, by either a ECU modifier or some kind of fuel map plug in module. But yes, just slapping on straight pipes and not modding the fuel could cause you issues. (usually way too lean)
