There was a great episode of The Woodwright's Shop where Roy visited a Moravian shop in the Carolinas. One of the demonstrations involved cutting sliding dovetails by hand, and they had this awesome little kerfing saw with angled bevels on the sides to match the angle of the dovetail plane. I had to make a Moravian bench first, but that kerf saw is definitely on my build list.

I can see this being used to cut a kerf in furniture to fit like 2 or 3-mm ply etc. for wardrobe backboards or picture frames.

I use 2 diy of them for resawing, 1 is for thin pieces, up to around 8 mm thick pieces, other is for thicker pieces but i used them mostly on expensive wood, like ebony or curly maple (for making guitars or inalys and small pices for furniture, boxes...). . I do own a bandsaw and a european framesaw and even if i'm using a bandsaw properly, i like to make a kerf cut before. I will spent that time to minimize (unfortunately not eliminate 100%) potential error.

I have a tool that looks like an oversized marking gauge. It has a 2 inch stem to accomodate a short saw blade. It can be use as a regular marking gauge with a kerf of 1/2 inch deep.

Stair saw is similar too. Just without the fence. Another specialized saw with few uses. Very cool if you want a specific tool for a task you enjoy and do often.

Love the idea of a kirfing saw for repeat cuts as a use for an old saw blade. Must have a go at this some day.

If I have a rabbet longer than six feet I still use it. Or a lot of identical ones. Was ideal when doing a room of wainscoting.

Can't you just saw a kerf all around with the frame saw? Or clamp a couple of boards on either side of the line? (I'm really good at jumping off the line).

I have a kerfing blade for the quangsheng no 46. It's a really poor blade, even after sharpening. I tried using it a couple of times but found it took ages as James suggests. I'm pretty good at just sawing to a line, so I just do that. I thought it might help on a project where I wanted thin boards and didn't have a lot of room for waste, but even then it didn't work any better than just using my 5" rip saw. Maybe one day I'll make one with a decent blade and see if I can make it work.

Seems like the fixed-fence one, perhaps with a bucksaw blade filed down to a narrower kerf, would be handy for repetitive measurements like shiplap or raised panels. I keep wanting one because I definitely am not yet skilled at resawing, but I haven't invested the time to build it yet.

Thanks for your amazing Videos! I made a quick and dirty kerfing plane by cutting an old Framesaw blade and bored fitting holes so that it could be clamped into my Record 050 combination plane. Works, but i hope i'm soon confident enough to resaw freehanded.

I’m gonna dremil in a 1/8 slot every 3rd tooth of an old saw blade to see if that helps with the clogging factor, that and a bottom mount adjustable wooden fence should give me a mix of the two planes you showed. What “wood” I do without this channel for inspiration?

It's easy enough to piece together parts from scrap and hardware. And take a piece of a bandsaw blade for instance and just make yourself one of these. I have made a couple of them actually and they're not that hard. It's really enjoyable task making tools, especially as a beginner would worker because you get an understanding for the wood you're working with and you end up with the tool that you can use from there on out

Picture this: You wake up ... Not in your bed but in a hospital... First thought: How did this happen? Many other thoughts follow. At least you woke up. That was me back in 2011. Previously, I had run shop for as many as 120 carpenters and other jobs. Recovery was to lead me down this current Rabbit Hole( no, I didn't meet Peter). Getting vertigo that can't stop or be dealt with from doctor prescribed meds lead me to just deal with it in my own way, Unplugged Woodworking. The re-learning of my forefathers skills is a lost art and there are a lot of useful and interesting tools are never needed when using powered tools. Kerfing saws are just another one of those good training tools to get you up and running again. They can also save you wood and time and keep you from wasting a rare chunk of wood that just may be very costly to turn into sawdust rather than the finished piece you started on.

This is nothing more than an embellished stair saw. As as stair saw its biggest advantage is sawing dado to predetermined depth, and if set up correctly do it well. Mine is set up at eight tpi crosscut and installed in the pull position.Best to use a knifed and chisel relieved wall due to visibility issue..they leave a good wall and no tear out with careful use. I personally cannot recommend Blackburn tools due to delivery issues that are widely reported. I personally have a twelve inch saw plate order that has not been fulfilled with no response to inquires as to delivery date or refund forthcoming from Blackburn. Too bad because I liked his products.
