+wagfinpis I agree, I had a good idea however it peaked my interest watching Ted2 and all throughout the movie I hear "Hashtag this and Hashtag that" lol so at the end I had to just look it up to be sure what it was >

Harsh comment yes.....Yes because something si simple they make it complex....maybe you who understand have some idea already and you could through this vague...and maybe if asked you still may fail to explain but you just to act as if you get it...Just to please the uploader.......We all not bad people...but honesty makes the uploader think and make adjustment for better content and way of communication....Nothing broken...

ohpineapples well. Depends the hashtags will automatically take people to the place where that hashtags has been used before. So the more people that use that direct hashtags then the more content that it will lead too. On things like twitter will also search words in tweets/profiles.

Why can't you just search for the word or words, why does the hashtag have to precede it for it to be searched for. The hashtag doesn't seem to serve a purpose.

Yes - when you use a hashtag and someone searches for the hashtag your post will show up in the search. So you get more visibility with your content by using hashtags that people search for.

To me, you make it sound like a # creates an instant link. Dont you have to connect a link with an URL first? Also, what happens if you create a # phrase that is already created and the interests differ, like some synonym?

The #word will automatically create a hyperlink and take you to a search result for that specific # + word. - But no, not a link to any other URL. . If you want to create a link to something else you still have to insert the URL. What happens if you create a #phrase that is already created and the interests differ - well, you're search results will have both interests in them. So if you want to create a #phrase - do a twitter search first and see what the current conversation is about that #phrase. Then decide if you want to join it - or choose a different hashtag.

I still dont get it. How do i create a hashtag? By tweeting one ? Example, do i just tweet, for example, #itsme. .. did i just create a hashtag? And if i did, can anyone else use this same one? How do i put CONTENT under this hashtag? Isnt it like a public folder of sorts? How to i ADD content to it? Can others ADD content to it? What purpose does it serve?

Yes! You did it! Just type the # sign and any string of letters and in most social platforms it will be a clickable link. The link goes to a list of all posts on that platform that also use the same hashtag. Yes, anyone else can use the same one, so always search for your hashtag first before using it so you know what other posts might appear near yours.

Hi, since I started to learn about the HashTag I think that I became a sort of expert with it, I've had learning for long time the Social Media and everytime I found something good, it was too much early for my social life, I'm over Lima Perú, now I can see the future very clear using the HashTag properly, now I'm using it with Election Campaign with nice results and in the future elecctions, all the candidates will need their own Hashtag real good worked in all over the Internet, you'd see here: #EleccionesMunicipales2018 #EleccionesRegionales2018 I also use other Hashtags for my publications such #FanPagePeru #HashTagPeru #A1Yo #RedesDigitales among other. I hope to hear from some of you. ( Sorry about my English grammar )

A hashtag is essentially just a meta tag however their use will diminish in time as AI searches become the norm and data agregation becomes essential - in 2014 KZread had 17,000 hours of content uploaded every hour, how do you manage that? So correct language will prevail as it is the only ready built communuication system plus the society we live in is a knowledgist one, to coin a phrase, those who know and think get the best out of it.

People are very critical and even get angry (frustrated) over new things like hashtag. I think its important to realize that it is natural to resist change. I didnt know what hashtag was and so i resented it. But if it was completely pointless then it wouldnt be so popular. Im not saying that popular things are good. But everything is serving some purpose-whether it be good or bad or stupid. But just because you dont understand something, or it isnt useful to you, doesnt mean others arent enjoying it. My dad hated social media and would never get on facebook. Now hes been on for a few years and he is mad that im no longer on. You get less angry with something when you get to know it. Like how we judge others.

I don't know, man. communication is the most important part to human beings and their relationships. if we keep watering things down with social media, making things more effortless, disconnected and less personal, it may not be a good thing compared to lesser developed countries with stronger personal ties and passion. that personal connection is being replaced with robots and code.

OK you know what keywords are, that's when you use certain words in a post to get Goggle algorithm attention. #hashtag takes that one step further: not only does Google have a keyword so does your target audience. Hope that helps. I thought I understood but this vid explains it so beautifully.
