    😂😂. The funny thing is I’ve seen people do the exact same thing when changing from one brand of whiskey to another. To remove any residue and odors from the last whiskey they where sipping. It’s normally the tiniest amount of the next whiskey they are going to sip. And yes it gets swirled around the glass and normally thrown onto the ground or over your shoulder.

    For anyone genuinly wondering how to start with whisky, dont stress too much about what particular whisky. I would say start with something low abv. 40%. You want to train yourself to get used to the alcohol burn so its no longer an unpleasant distraction. Perhaps add a teaspoon or 2 of spring water (not chilled) and take a sip, roll it over your tongue gently and swallow. Focus on the flavours, not the burn. What did you notice? Was it floral? Fruity? Did it remind you of citrus or perhaps xmas cake or were there whisps of a campfire?Eventually you wont notice the burn very much and will be able to 'see through' it to the flavours, but as richard said, dont rush it! Have a dram when you feel like it. Share your journey with a friend and compare notes. Its not a competition, its an experience that we are lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy. As far as what bottle? Theres no rules but id say start with something decent but not expensive (ie better than johnny walker red but not too expensive). It doesnt have to be a scotch either. There is great whisky made all over the world but you can find decent quality and affordable scotches at most bottle shops. You want something thats meant for savouring but if you are inexperienced you might not be able to appreciate the nuances of an expensive bottle and that would be a a shame for the whisky and your wallet. You can build up to that later! Later on, go halves with your whisky pal on a more fancy bottle and enjoy it together. Welcome to the wide world of whisky.

    For what it's worth, the first scotch that I started with that I really liked was Glenmorangie so that's what I always recommend. It's not too expensive and not too strong and a little fruity so it's easy to drink.

  • @bluemarlin8138

    @bluemarlin8138

    That’s a good one to start with. So is Balvenie. Or even Glenlivet or Glenfiddich for that matter, although they have a bit less character (but then again, a beginner probably won’t mind that). I’d say a Macallan too, but some people taste a lot of sulphur in it (I don’t) and find that off-putting. I’d definitely recommend that beginners hold off on some of the more “interesting” scotches until getting some experience, and then finally try the peated stuff, if that’s something they like.

  • @davedavid427

    @davedavid427

    Exactly what I'd recommend, the flagship Glenmorangie 10, or a fruity Speyside like Aberlour 12. Try them in a pub first though, they're a bit pricey for beginners (although good value for 10/12 year old single malts). Anything by Glen Moray is sweet/floral and easy on the wallet; I like their Chardonnay cask finish the most and that's obviously a good one for a wine drinker getting into scotch. For blends, Johnnie Walker black is the ultimate blend of different regions and flavours. Also a good one to try in a pub. You don't need to start with scotch. Irish whiskey is generally herbal, honeyed and/or floral and easier on the wallet (standard Bushmills is a great place to start, or slightly higher end Bushmills Black Bush or Glendalough Double Barrel). Bourbon's great for beginners because it's dominant flavour is vanilla. Maker's Mark and Buffalo Trace are both great standard bourbons.

    the best way i found is a whisky tasting set. find which regional variety you like the best, and then you can try other specific malts. also, often given advice for scotch is neat with just a few drops of water in your dram - not any amount that would 'cut' it. maybe folk advice, but i find it opens up the flavour surprisingly well for such an insignificant dilution.

  • @scottclarke1350
    @scottclarke13506 ай бұрын

    Monkey shoulder blended malt is a great one to start with. Other options would be glenlivet 12 yo, glenmorangie 10 yo or a chivas regal 12 yo. Remember to add enough water so you can drink it comfortably and try a few different ones to discover what you like!

    It's pretty easy to pick one and start. recommendations are better when given on a taste preference. for a beginner, asking your local total wine or specs employees is going to provide about the same result as asking someone who has been in the industry for decades, because a beginners palette hasn't developed and evolved to recognize certain notes that will make a Jameson different from a Grangestone. a beginner will be able to pick up on things like heat, smoothness, and general flavor, but not enough for it to make a significant difference between price ranges, types, and ages. What this gentleman did was elaborate on how a beginner should develop their pallete, and effectively said "you can start wherever you like, but make sure you taste it well to find what you truly enjoy."

    There is a phrase I go with that always helped me whenever I was around products I did not have an intimate knowledge of that would guide me to “the good stuff”. My mother taught it to me and I think it came from Coco Chanel, and I think it’s perfect for that time when you’re out and about and you don’t have someone around to guide you to the right decisions. It goes like this: “If you don’t know what is good, ask what is expensive”. I have, of course, greatly developed my tastes and my knowledge of many things since childhood, but this mindset never failed me whenever I encountered something new as I was growing up😉

    Johnny Walker Green Label was my Beginner-Level Scotch. Before drinking Scotch, when I was much younger, I started with Southern Comfort bourbon, eventually moved on to Wild Turkey, and over to Jameson's, and then got into various types of Johnny Walker blended whisky before I started regularly drinking Scotch. The bottle I'm currently working on is Glenlivet Captain Reserve.

    The actual answer you didn't get from the wonderful (but very diplomatic) Mr Paterson here is Highland Park. Start there. If you don't like it then probably no Scotch is going to work for you.

    For me, Lagavulin and a 15 yr Dalmore are my favorites. But as the saying goes, the best Whisky is the one *you* enjoy.

    Dalmore 15 is delicious. I havnt been able to get a bottle for a while. Toffee, orange and dried xmas cake fruits are my memory of it. Really goes well woth a couple of bits of good quality chocolate as well.
