The MOST important thing for anyone to ever learn about a fraction IS that the denominator is one. Yes 1 as in one complete thing. It took me so long to understand this super simple concept. See my name SimpleMan. It seems kind of strange that 1 can be written as 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7. OK enough of that; you get the point all the way to infinity. So the meaning of the denominator is how many times one has been divided. Yes, smart people will at some point figure it out, but why not just come right on out at the very beginning & say "the denominator is one". The numerator is how many pieces of one you have. People like me that struggle with math/arithmetic is because we did not learn the core elements early on. I understand that is not the fault of the teachers; but I'm making this long comment in hopes to help someone not quite getting it yet, like I was. Learning rules means nothing if you do not understand what is going on. All of my teachers told me that multiplication was repeated addition. So I could not understand how 1/2 X 1/2 was 1/4. It looks to me like if you add 1/2 & 1/2 you should get 1. I took a piece of paper & drew a box, I labeled 2 of the sides 1/2. As I looked at the box I had drawn, I finally realised it would take 3 more boxes the same size to make 1 (one) complete box. This comment is way too long, so I'm not even going to mention multiplying negative numbers.

THERE'S A PROBLEM IN YOUR METHOD! You can't always just multiply by 2 or expect the common denominator to be obvious! with a lot of fractions the numbers are much bigger and you have to find which factors for each denominator lead to the same common denominator. It's not this simple.
