The problem with having no rear fender at all is that when you drive through a puddle or if it's raining, the rooster tail that the rear tire created will soak your back. You don't need an entire fend, but just enough of one to block those rooster tails in the area that would deflect water from your backside.

i truly believe that anyone who has that itch and love for riding a motorcycle, whether bobber, cruiser, bagger, chopper etc if its a comfortable or uncomfortable ride those kinds of people will always ride, others will just complain. i had a bobber once, and the previous owner had a seat like you mentioned, no springs! went over a deep pot hole and my kidneys felt like mike tyson took a left hook to my ribs haha..

Definition of Bobber (satire): 1. One that bobs (floats) 2. A person who rides or races on a bobsled 3. A motorcycle removed of all perceived unnecessary items with the intent of being "Cool, Hip, Rad, or Bad Ass" 4. A motorcycle no one wants to ride more than 30-45 min but wants to stare at and be stared at.

Better yet, I was riding next to some guy who had a hard tailed shovelhead bobber, and he never did stop or complain once.

You talked about the front fender for protection from rocks and such, and the dangers of riding without the rear fender, but what about the ride in general. I have a custom built 88 Sportster bobbed out. It's an 883 converted to 1200 with a Buell XB9 top end, on a Pauchgo rigid frame with 35° of rake. It has no front fender, and a custom ribbed rear fender that covers just past the top of the tire. I've been hit by several rocks and bugs over the years, although always from the vehicles in front of me, where the front fender couldn't protect me anyways. The front fender is good for protection, but I never found it to make the difference others say it does. The best protection it provides is in wet conditions. And that brings me to the rear. I've been caught in the rain several times, and it sucks either way. I have found that visibility is hampered more without my front fender than it is on my other bike that still has the front fender, but the difference is not so much that it deters me from riding. The rear fender however is another story entirely. I have a friend who tried the rear fender delete, but he hated it, and after getting caught in the rain on his bike, I found out why. It was the worst experience I've ever had on a bike, and that's including a major accident that almost killed me. The bike has since been upgraded with custom struts, and a short bobbed fender, and is much better. If you want to rock the fenderless rear, that's up to said owner, but a rear fender delete doesn't make a bike a bobber. The idea of the bobber concept was to strip the bike down of un-needed weight to make the bike lighter, slimmer, and faster. It was modifications to make the bike faster and better performing, and handling. Otherwise, it's more of a style than an absolute. So many people try to put rules on what is and isn't on a bobber. I think it's better stated "bobber style ", considering that there's no absolute rules. The esthetic of the bobber is what most people like.... stripped down, and simplistic. The exact look and type depends on the rider. Personally I hate the fenderless look, but that's just me. For those who like it, that's awesome. We all like different things, and the fact that we can share differences in a particular genre is really cool. Many people say that my bike isn't a bobber at all, while even more people say they love my bobber. I consider it a bobber for sure, considering that's the vision I had building it, but in the end my opinion is the only one that really matters since I'm the one who has to be happy with it. And that sentiment is the same for each and every bike owner. I would encourage everyone to consider all the aspects of your choices when it comes to customization, because we all know that it comes with drawbacks as well as the cool factor we so often go for. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

I rode for a few years without a back fender on a hardtail and it never happened. I even ride on a dirt road on a daily basis because that's where i live. I did have to pull my pants way up every time or it would throw everything from the road in my asscrack.

@@NaamioKukko you'd have to make sure to ride on dry dry days too, right? Gotta make sure not to hit any small puddles or else it'll throw water all up your back and ruin your shirt of the day?

I know this a old video but I just wanted to comment on the stock Sportster 48 suspension. I have been daily riding a 2019 48 that I has been turned into a bobber. (So far have kept rear suspension)as my only transportation and have ridden just under 10K miles (on shitty Oklahoma roads) in the past 6-8 months and can honestly say that the bike is not very comfortable at all, It definitely isn’t a bike built for riding long distances or on roads that aren’t well maintained. That said I would ride this bike anywhere anytime and have. I have no fenders, basically just a pan for a seat and exhaust that that has destroyed my gas milage causing me to get roughly 60 miles to a tank as long as I’m riding conservatively... but I love it and can’t picture ever parting with it. The bike in this video is super sick and has been one of my favorite bikes on the internet for a long time.
