Your German pronunciation was alright! A note about Otto von Guericke: He was mayor of Magdeburg, yes, but of course that's not what he's famous for. His more important contribution, and the reason why the city named its university after him, was as a physicist. He came up with the idea of vacuum and atmospheric pressure, and invented the first vacuum pump. The "Magdeburg hemispheres" experiment was performed by him.

I somewhat disagree. For me it was rather difficult to understand the locations where the water is sourced from. Especially for non-native German speakers that is a challenge. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind wrong pronunciation and I appreciate the effort, but I would also appreciate if such difficult to pronounce words would be printed on the screen for easier understanding.

@@ingogelhard8543 no it isn’t. It stems from the word ‘Magd’ which has a long pronunciation of the letter ‘a’ as far as I know. So a long pronunciation of Magdeburg is technically correct.

It’s so damn funny. I subbed your channel just a week ago to learn more about Asias technology and now you are talking about my hometown 🧐 I never thought in a million years that this city would ever have such an international focus in the media as of right now. Btw. the pronunciation was pretty good. Especially Colbitz-Letzinger Heide is a hard one. :D

Magdeburg ist schon lange international. Erstens studieren Menschen aus aller Welt an den Universitäten, zweitens sind in Magdeburg Durchbrüche bezüglich der Therapie von Parkinson gemacht worden.

I am living in Dresden and Magdeburg and I am stunned by your research! Great work man. This factory really seems to be the turning point for MD. Finally the city is back on the world map and will attract more people.

2 points to add: There are also some other big companies like IBM and T-Systems in MD for the reason of accessibility of highly educated people. Another reason may be the good location as a chip supplier for car manufacturing. Elons car factory Grünheide near Berlin is a 2h drive from MD and directly connected via the A2 and A10 Autobahn. In the western direction there is the biggest german car hub with VW and lots of its suppliers located at Wolfsburg 1.5h drive via A2 and A39 Autobahn, whereas Dresden would be in a "corner" of Germany.

You forgot, to the south, 1 hour away, is the airport Leipzig Halle, with is the DHL/Amazon main hub for transport flights. And at the same the town were Porsche and BMW have ther factory. To the north, it is a 2h drive to Hamburg, the main port of Germany, which can be directly connected by river, all time in the year

The water pipelines and the connected water reservoir are build pre second world war for 500k citizen in Magdeburg, when the town was at there population peak with 380k. Currently, only 230k live in the town, the two factory have a demand like 80k each, so the Pipelines have a reserve for 110k more people, before the area need to add new watersupply.

Nah, Musk/tesla is way too jumpy as a (potential) customer to be worth considering by intel. The spacial distance is also very negligible in this case.

I guess it wouldn't be too much to ask to extend out one of the tram lines to the factory, if it's going to be one of Magdeburg's biggest employers.

i think so too, that parking lot looks like it would hold about 3500 to 4000 cars which is like ... 5000 people for public transport getting 5000 people somewhere is nearly trivial, so if that space was used for a bus/tram/train hybrid station instead it could be a lot cheaper for a "normal" bus with two doors you have 100 ish capacity, so that 50 buses (or lets say 80 buses for less efficient packing/non perfect staggering) if you have a bus arrive every 5 minutes in 5 lanes you can have 5000 people arrive in about 80 minutes so with tram and train, you could absolutely have the capacity to bring people into the building in the morning within an hour - completely without traffic jams

@@Maric18 I think you'd want fairly high capacity transit, since most people at the plant would be working in fixed shifts. I think a tram stop would certainly be worth it for 5k passengers a day, if it's just a simple line extension. Buses could pick up a few workers from outlying suburbs and villages, and of course there would be some who still need to drive in.

It is incredible how well this understood a lot about the new history of the city, the interconnections and identity. Coming from a non German this is unbelievable and there are millions especially in the former West Germany how are a lot behind this level of knowledge on the Eastern history. I highly appreciate this video, thanks a lot.

I grew up in hillsboro when Intel chose it for a location of it's first fab, now the area is covered with Intel fabs and RnD. It has been a tremendous benefit to the local area. Intel is now Oregon's Largest employer in both number of people, and income (outpacing Nike, Adidas, Reebok Daimler)

That the EU is funding Intel to come over in part is probably due to strategic concerns I guess, it is a bit problematic if a major trade or other incident cuts the EU off from advanced computing technology. Of course such things aren't free, so one hopes they've balanced the costs well versus the amount of risk mitigated.

I guess this initiative is not only about attracting only one major chip fab for high end nodes, but also it's about growing a future network of suppliers, research and personal, which could eventually could support a genuine european semiconductor industry. Actually, Germany is very active in semiconductor research, only thing is that most of it is concerned with things such as solar cells and exotic materials.

As a resident of Magdeburg I was highly and very positively surprised to find your video. You did a solid research and a good presentation of the city. I share your conclusions about the positive impact Intel will have to Magdeburg on so many levels. The question remains how high the percentage of new jobs will be for residents of Magdeburg or the surrounding area. Berlin is not far away as well as the metropolitan area of Halle/Leipzig. So many empoyees could come from those areas. Another question that comes to mind is about the amount of taxes Intel will pay in Magdeburg. Many big companies are treaded very benevolent by governments, i.e. Tesla with its settling southeast of Berlin or Amazon. I hope the positive effects will prevail. Thumbs up for your german pronounciation!

I think Intel impact in Magdeburg for better or worse then TSMCs impact will depend greatly on what other functions is done there besides manufacturing (like R&D, Sales….).

I agree. Once the construction is done, there is really not that many workers needed. The ROI on jobs per dollar is much lower in semiconductors than other industries that rely less on automation.

@@excitedbox5705 I think you should broaden your ROI for Germany Intel will build up a nice supplier base and highly skilled workers. Just look at chandler in Arizona pre intel and post intel, these kinds of deals aggregate a lot of wealth to the region (IP, technical employees, suppliers, universities etc.)

@@fabianstuckmann3611 no they wont Germany is densely populated and cultivated so they dont need to make that stuff on site. Its not uncommon for a craftsmen do drive each day to a construction site in another state for example.

Heavy metals are easy to get rid of in used water discharge. They form easy unsolvable salts with sulfides and you treat the rest with Fe(II) ions that form a kind of active carbon effect at pH 9,5. They form a kind of snowflake that has huge surface and binds stuff with it.

The problem is cleaning the soils from heavy metals. it's a big problem, especially in eastern Germany. Often it is needed to carve out the soil to treat properly.

While the employee situation in Dresden is tight, Magdeburg can draw from northern Germany's Universities such as Hannover. H. has an EE material science, manufacturing department and of course general physics too. But Hannover has no demand for semiconductor engineers.

My grandma used to live close to Magdeburg. I learned something new about the city from your video, and you going through all the aspects of chip manufacturing and social/environmental linkages is just great. Also, take a look at Otto von Guericke in the comment below from Daniel Bamberger. While it's not the topic of your channel, just think about how frustrating it is for people living in a place where inventors such as von Guericke (but also Zeiss in Jena....) pushed forward science, while nowadays being de-industrialized due to exactly the history you laid it. It is extremely satisfying to see this heal. Re: the purpose of having a Fab here, isn't it just attractive for the EU to be less dependent on imports from overseas sites? I'd say this is the main rationale of the Fab subsidies

German here (obviously ^^), the pronunciation of the Colbitz Letzlinger Heide and Westfläming was actually pretty good!

Compared to other countries, Germany is so small that it doesn't matter where you build your factory and eastern Germany is still pretty cheap. You can get skilled workers not only from Germany but especially from eastern european countries like Poland to Romania, where technical jobs are still more popular for young students then in western Europe.

Point is, you need a backbone of skilled worker from the Semiconductor-Industry to run such a hugh new factory. And for Germany, you can find these people only in Dresden.

I am from Magdeburg and it's a really appriciated thing at least for me and the people i know. I Study Cumputer science here in Magdeburg and i am born here. I really hope this will help our region and also make the EU less dependent on Asian Tech wich may be a big factor in the near future.

On the water topc, the waterpiplines and supply were build for 500k citizen pre second world war, when the population peaked at 380k. The current 230k citizen only use half of the capacity. So with your 80k per factory, we have 230k+160k = 390k water demand, which gives 110k water reserve for new citizen and other companies, before the area has to add new pipelines into the water market.

Magdeburg is a totally underrated. Living quality is high and living is cheap. Intel surprised everybody in Magdeburg. Interestingly, the OvGU has scuttled it's semiconductor manufacturing in the last years.

I live in Germany and I plan to study engineering, probably something with semiconductors, next year. This fab might be my future work space, which is really exciting. A problem I see, however, is the water situation and the car problem as shown by the huge parking space. I try to save the environment with my actions so both seem not that great.

Water from the Elbe is similiar to that in Dresden. This simplifies purification equip and removes need to install new testing stations downstream as the water is tightly monitored already because of the Dresden fab.. I guess that was one of reasons to deploy new fab along same river - it simply cuts costs . Ad transport - This is dead German city, with loads of disciplined people. Any extra local company paying taxes will create public transport . I hope that besides public transport and bicycle network they will also build "bicycle highways" shared with lightweight microcar infrastructure, as usually there is this "middle shelf" system missing, adding annoyance as it is colder climate city.

Building such a fab takes like 5 years and i bet there will be social consulting meetups in the city council to integrate it , esp it seems it will be flagship industry of the city and any infrastructure for workers will get double use for tourism too.

@@NutellaToastOW I think the render is mainly for a US audience, and the marketing department simply had to create a render of a factory that projects the idea of "many new jobs created". Still, as is seen with the Tesla/Grünheide, it may be a struggle to get all of this into harmony.

I live in Magdeburg. It's one of the driest regions in Germany already. We have been in drought since 2018. I'm really afraid of the future and whether we'll have enough affordable water and food. I'm active in a local community garden and we're parched. We need to water with tap water, because it doesn't rain enough. We even decided against trying to bore a well, because the groundwater is probably gone anyway. The Elbe often has low water. I don't even want to know how much area is going to be sealed again for this thing. I wish they would at least TRY to make the building eco-friendly. But I doubt it. :( The green spaces are being reduced, which takes away living space from local wildlife that had to flee the countryside because they are being poisoned and made homeless there. And we also aren't a "capital of culture". We APPLIED for that title, but weren't granted it. While there are a few theaters and an opera house, independent and sub-cultural projects are often underfunded or shut down.

Aber ich weiß nicht, ob man das jetzt direkt auf Trockenheit zurückführen kann. 2012 und 2013 hatten wird nämlich gar keine Dürre im Raum Magdeburg. 2012 gab es Dürre im nördlichen Bayern, BaWü und eventuell Thüringen, aber dort fließt die Elbe ja nicht lang. Magdeburg recieves less rainfall than Tel Aviv and just a bit more than Santa Clara - yet evaporation might be not as high due to higher latitude.

Another major reason why Intel chosed Magdeburg, was the central location to huge Customers. Tesla´s Gigafactory lies around 130km east, VW Headquarter lies around 100km west and Leipzig also has a big BMW and PORSCHE factory, that both lie about 100km south. Furthermore, they are all easily reachable by cars/trucks via Autobahn and also by train or even ship, because of the canal in the north of Magdeburg.

Speaking of Dresden, Global Foundry is certainly there. However, Infineon (world's largest power semiconductor manufacturer) and Bosch have much larger fabs in Dresden. Certainly worth mentioning.

well done video and especially interesting for the facts about water needs in waver production, since Magdeburg region is one of those with the smallest rainfalls within Germany. In the last 3 or 4 years of draught ground water levels dropped dramatically. The Elbe river had such unknown low levels of water that it was not navigable by ships for several months each year. Three notes to video itself: The East German Mark were converted 2:1 to the West German Mark in 1990, with exception only small amount per person to soften hardships for poor people. Otto von Guericke should be pronounceable for two reasons: "otto" ist the city's marketing character and Mayor Otto von Guericke's unique roll as scientiest discovering and describing the effect of air pressure and vacuum. The Hundertwasser building is called Green Citadel (not Green Cathedral) refering to the cities history of the stronges fortified city of Prussia. One critical issus was not mention in the video: the position of the facility. Magdeburg is flanked in the West and Southwest by the best arable soil to be found in Germany, often twice or even three times as productive as the fields in the North or East of the city. There of all places between 300 and 500 hectars of untouched fields are reserve for the Intel facility. This would mean an area which is 15 to 25 time larger (!) than the Dresden facilities mentioned in the video. Having this precious soil in mind it was a PR disaster to me presenting the first architectural renderings with gigantic ground-level parking lots - taking up nearly 50% of the project area and illustrating the not sustainable, wasteful approach of soil sealing. This might be the norm in car dependent and extensive North America, but raises eyebrows in dense and environmentally conscious Europe.

Magdeburg do not use any river water, the Elbe was for 100 years a death river and undrinkable. Magdeburg depends on a water pipeline system, builder pre second world war, and designed for 500k citizen in Magdeburg, when the town were at the population peak with 380k. At the moment, only 230k people use this waterpiplines for 500k. There is enough water reservoir connect to the town and region.

In order to obtain the ground water levels river water is taken from the Ohre river and seeped there. The Ohre river is a tributary river of the Elbe river - harvesting water there does have an effect consequently on the Elbe river, too. This ground water supply from the heath for Magdeburg startet in the 1960's. Before that water came directly from the Elbe river - though it was taken from the East banks of the river, since the highly polutated tributary rivers enter from the West and the river water does not completly mix for a long distance. Magdeburg never, at no time had 380 k inhabitants. The demographic peak was at 330 k in 1939.

As someone who lives very close to Magdeburg, does anyone know where the plant will be located? I tried the Volkstimme, but the site is pants. Weiß jemand, der ganz in der Nähe von Magdeburg wohnt, wo sich das Werk befinden wird? Ich habe es bei der Volkstimme versucht, aber die Seite ist Mist.

@@henningbartels6245 thanks, my wife said Eulenberg, so it'll need something more than a tram to get out there from Magdeburg, looks like there is a train though, and close to the Amazon place. It looks quite industrialised though around there.

@@MrSquuqs "Eulenberg" is basically a field name - unless you are a local farmer you didn't came accross this term so far. Some ppl in Magdeburg have been dreaming of a tram connection to Ottersleben for decades. Such a future tram line could be extended to the facility. So far you will only get to Ottersleben by bus which could be easily extended to Intel, too. There is also a train and bus stop in the adjacent industrial area of Osterweddingen as well.

Your pronunciations of the german names are actually quite good.

Your pronunciation of the names was pretty good. Particularly considering that other Asians I met were puzzled about the name of my hometown, which is phonetically as difficult as Kolbitz Letzlinger Heide. The city of Erfurt has it easier. Just think of airport and you are pretty close to pronouncing it. I'm from Saxony-Anhalt and I had relatives in Magdeburg.

The currency exchange is not what made eastern German industry uncompetitive, it was already extremely uncompetitive in the global market. The Ostmark was worth less than a fifth of the Westmark before. The exchange was therefore a massive, unprecedented subsidy to east Germans. Imagine your liquid wealth going up 5 fold just like that. The alternative would have been to let us live in poverty with a growing economy, which would have the same effect of bleeding the country dry, since no one wants to work the same job for much less money than in the west. If Korea ever unifies, the north will become a ghost town, and probably never recover in population

after some time east Germany turned to what west germany could never have again - nature and tourism. Industry is not everything and it transforms cities and landscapes forever. Look up how well tourist resorts in the east Germany fare - with horse farms, ski resorts, permaculture farms, spa cities. Certainly not a "ghost cities" esp. after rebuilding of cities like Dresden, which get almost quarter of tourist turnover of Prague. North Korea has huge touristic potential too, and will sure serve for overcrowded and overindustrialised south Korea. North Korea has beautiful mountain ranges which are attractive to visit both for Koreans and Chineese. Also for people from europe or america it would be much easier to start sightseeing Korea starting from smaller, traditional settlements in the north, where they can get some idea about history, culture and nature, before being thrown i to some crazy place like Seoul and getting culture shock.

@@piotrcurious1131 Dude, im a Dresdener, the city is rich and vibrant. Tourism is not a major industry. That doesn't change the fact that in the early 90s, 30 years ago, there was a massive exodus of people and industry. My argument is that that industry was artificially kept alive by corrupt socialist planners and not competitive in a market. The downturn couldn't have been avoided if the people did not recieve the subsidy. You can draw parallels with North Korea, except it would be much worse, since the economic differrence is mindboggling. The only economies that can live off tourism are tiny local areas.

@@CjqNslXUcM Like Bavaria or Florence?😃 I live near Dresden and if you consider it "vibrant" then you should really travel more. I do not say Dresden is all bad, but like You say, it only survived thanks to huge subsidies as s city. Big problem after socialism was that it left everything polluted, overpopulated and in debt. Tourism is sure not main defining industry of Dresden, but it is significant part of it. It is generally impossible to expect failed states like eastern Germany to survive after collapse of communism by themselves, without subsidies , thanks to some cargo cult project like industry or tourism, yet it helps to define the sustainable future and potential of the place . Afterall after one or two generations of depopulation and subsidies goal is to reach stable state.

Thats ture ... things like a (world)war can flip things that grew for decades upside down. I see the same thing happen in Ukraine btw. because until the very recent past eastern Uraine was the industrialized and wealthy part but now there was and is the most fighting there and people migrated to the western part.

I am really looking forward to Intel coming to our city! Your history on Magdeburg is very correct, I know bc my grandpa worked at SKET as a young man before he made himself selfemployed. This city really suffered during war times, a lot of very old and historical buildings were destroyed, sadly only a few stand to this day. Magdeburg used to be a giant thriving city and capital of the kingdom from Otto the Great in the 10th century. Sadly that is almost everything that Magdeburg has to offer: history - but not much left of it to impress. I hope that when Intel comes here, they bring our city out of the shadows again so that people will know this city again and we are not forgotten anymore, as we are now.. Thank you really much for this video! I am grateful that people are interessted in this topic and maybe soon young people will start to stay here or even come to work here from other parts od Germany. I will always stay here, because I love this city will all its flaws and all its beauty (nice pick of pictures btw. I was so happy to see the effort you put into researching^^)

Im from Magdeburg and we was an important industrial city in the past.The most people in Magdeburg are very exciting and hopeful for the future.Magdeburg growing up to his old size and significancity In german it calls:"Magdeburger Größenwahn" ;)

such grade of fabs do not take in people without experience. You can try to get internship in Dresden to see if You would like the job. Besides education there is loads of other things involved - it is factory .

I’d hope the wafer fabs would learn to recycle their water, clean and use.

Thanks for this very interesting video. I really hope that this comes to fruition. But I see some pretty strong challenges ahead. There are speculations in some German papers that Intel might be forced to import technical talent from Taiwan and South Korea because of the lack thereof here in Germany. I dont know about that. A significant challenge will be power and its cost. I somewhat doubt the economic viability of this fab with the current prices of electrical energy and the trajectory they follow for years now (highest in OECD now and rising). Intel might be better off building their own power plant to mitigate this and the growing instability of the German grid.

The German grid is one of the most stable grids in the world. But most factories this size have their own power plant - more control about prices.

@@Sedna063 I know what you mean, but it was one of the most stable not is. Up until the late 90s it was very stable, but now the energy companies need to regulate the grid several times a day to keep it stable (20 years ago they did that 3 to 4 times a month). With the prioritizing of the so-called renewable energy sources, the grid became ever more unstable. Maybe Intel will get a permit for an own power plant, but I doubt it.

so... you work at the euv training centre?

R&D will be in France though.

West Germany did not exactly do a hostile take over of East Germany. It was more of a rescue mission.

Me as Magdeburger is very hapoy about the choice from Intel we also speak in the school about it mostly in history because this is a part of the Industrial revolution part 4 I think
