"What In The Wide, Wide World Of Sports Is A-Goin' On Here!" NYS&W RY

What in holy heck?! October 18, 2023 brought a big surprise on New York, Susquehanna & Western's Utica NY branch: the Susquehanna borrowed an engine from the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern, the other railroad based in Utica. This has happened before but only very rarely.
The engine? No. 2042, a M420W manufactured by Montreal Locomotive Works, the Canadian subsidiary of the now defunct American Locomotive Company (ALCo). This engine is known by some as the "Atomic Engine" as it "starred" in an 1999 NBC miniseries called the "Atomic Train".
The title refers to a line by Slim Pickens in Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles".
No. 2042 joined NYS&W 3040, normally the only power stationed in Utica for most of the year, and helped switch local customers before heading to Sangerfield, 23 miles south Utica.

    It's good to see them sharing resources to keep the industry going. When Vanderbuilt , Durant and the boys controlled it, it was every man for himself. Especially if you owned the only railroad bridge into NYC. They would have never shared a track, much less an engine.

    Well worth the chase as one could hear the Alco running at least on the trip back. When going outbound it looked like two cars of fertilizer up front. Two cars of animal feed in the middle and the last two cars were soybean meal. I dare to say I'm impressed by that firm unloading their three box cars while the train was out at the other end of the line. That type of car is loaded with paper or cardboard in Maine or New Brunswick as those cars go by on the old Pan Am Ander on Miller's Railfan channel..As for B-B power CSX is low on it since they took over the line up to Portland ME. It was a pleasant mid-60s day in Milwaukee sunny and a gentle breeze great weather to watch videos and @ 17:00 note the feline to the side of the track. Apparently Bitold sent his stand in to welcome the train home. Thanks again!

    Sorry, I didn’t wait until the end to comment! At that crossing before they got to Utica, they were still using the horn on the 3040. At Utica, I could hear the 3 chime on the Alco, and saw an exhaust plume from it’s stack. Maybe still taking it to a buyer or for work to be done; or to a MA&N sister road. I’m not real familiar with the MA&N. Utica has a shop, doesn’t it? Maybe heading to a shop for it’s 93 day inspection, if MA&N doesn’t have the means to do it? Just some ramblings! By the way, did you see the cat in the left, lower portion of the screen, in Utica? I noticed it, and showed it to my daughter, who is a cat lover!

  • @railroadingrambler218

    @railroadingrambler218

    9 ай бұрын

    Yes, saw the cat. Felt sorry for it as it looked a little underweight. MA&N does have a shop in Utica as does the NYS&W. Perhaps 2042 is on the line now because 3040 will be up for an inspection/repairs. 3040 is the only engine in Utica now so if it will be out-of-service for a while, they'd need an extra locomotive.

    Not a diamond but an old spur line (approx 2 miles) known as the "Blue Line" since it ran along the southerly line of the old Erie Canal (present-day Oriskany Blvd). This line was blue on survey maps, hence the name. The Blue Line saw service through the early 1990s I believe.

    There used to be a crossover from the MA&N yard to the Susquehanna's over the CSX main. That was destroyed in a derailment back in the early 90s but never replaced. At present, to go from MA&N's yard to the NYS&W's, any move is required to access CSX Track 2 at the easterly end of MA&N's yard (by the Pitcher St post office), then head west 3 miles until the CSX/NYS&W connection is reached.
