What if The Whole World Suddenly Went Blind?

What would happen if the whole world suddenly went blind and could no longer see? Would we as civilization be able to function?

Thinking the same thing. We would completely recover throu automation, and be driven by instinct and heart. Beauty would almost be a thing of the past. Has even the most beautiful men/women could be absolutely unatractive by being an horrible person and eveything related to such cases. We would become much more true on the path of mind. Images would be a thing of the past. It would all come down to what we think and touch. Not what we see. It would be an improvement. If anyone is to survive and meet each others that is.

It’s nice that he relates to it, however videos like this only help continue spreading the stereotypes about blind people. Look at some of the comments on here. Some people think you need to see to click on the video. It’s 2018, technology is pretty advanced. If the worlds did go blind we wouldn’t have to hear stupid excuses like oh you are a liability issue and you need a drivers license to work here even though the job has nothing to do with driving. I’ve heard that excuse way too many times in the book along with every other cliché excuse to hide a discrimination and not want to hire blind people. I’m honestly sick of people with eyesight. Ignorant people like that deserve to go blind. It would serve them right.

Labradorable, do you think the video really did continue stereotypes? The comments are pretty dumb in a lot I've read so far, but I thought the video was pretty good. I'm not blind, but I do use a wheelchair, so I get where you're coming from, people just want everyone around them to be "normal" and often think the place of a disabled person is as a prop to make them feel good & nothing more. I liked that this video was suggesting that the world would simply work out how to function blind. I think that's what would happen - and that all those simple changes you've been pushing for for years & getting brushed off on, would FINALLY be implemented & so you'd be able to function in a completely normal way. Again I'm not blind, so I'm not sure, I'm actually really interested in comments from you & Rana's son as to how you think it would work, what changes would be needed for things to operate & how would farming work? How would you go about handling animals & things like knowing which strawberries or apples were ripe & ready to pick?

I suggest doing research into how blind people function. It might ease some of your anxieties. Not saying you can't be afraid of it, because it does take adjustment, but knowledge is power, so, at least researching, if not learning some yourself, of how blind people get around in the world and do what they need and want to do, might ease your anxieties. I am blind myself, so if you have any questions, Google them first and see if you can find an answer, but if you can't find it through Google, or if you want clarification, feel free to ask me.

like it or not, it IS offensive to at least some people with disabilities. The comment is implying the blind world appears freakish after returning to "normal" & by doing so implies that disabled people are freaks. Which is the truly freskish world? The Paralympic village dinning room where people are a mix of talking with their hands, rolling around on skateboards (with no legs), having dogs choose where they will sit, carrying their plates on their laps in their wheelchairs, eating with their feet (and using them to serve themselves from the buffet) OR a world where all people look the same, dress the same, eat the same, talk the same & move the same? Nothing wrong with being "disabled" & those who can't see that are the ones with the REAL disability

not much different. Sounds would be replaced with visual indicators instead - fire alarms would be flashing lights, door bells flashing lights, alarms would vibrate instead of ring. spoken language would be replaced with sign language & life would continue as normal. Many Deaf people who are in the Deaf community see it in many ways like being Gay - others might consider it a disability, but to them it's just who they are & there's nothing wrong with it. Think about it & see if you can come up with a genuine problem with being deaf when all around you are the same

promontorium, um you know Deaf people have a VERY vibrant music scene right? Just make sure you wear earplugs if you ever go to one of their gigs!!!!!! They enjoy the music through the vibrations, so it's REALLY REALLY REALLY LOUD!!!!!!!!!! & otherwise correct, maybe notepads for a short while, but once people started to learn sign, they probably wouldn't go back to spoken language in most settings even if hearing was restored. alarms etc would need to be replaced by lights or vibrations, but the whole world Deaf means no problems at all, totally normal, functional society (there are Deaf schools out there that show that & some towns in the world where most people are Deaf & so sign is the first language of everyone living there & everything works completely normally

Have you done any research into blind people's lives? Seriously, "We would have to make smart phones for the blind." Have you done any research into smart phones? They're the most accessible pieces of technology ever! Apple fucking rocks! Also, there is nothing unfortunate about blind kids. We're perfectly happy being blind. We don't know what side is, so we don't give a shit. Really, be more careful with how you write things. Try looking at things through other peoples perspectives. How about try talking to blind people, of all sorts. Both people who went blind later, and those who were born blind. They're totally different. Lastly, again, if you had done your research, you would know that those who go blind later still see in their dreams. It's only those of us who are blind since birth, whose brains don't know what sight is, who don't see in their dreams. Your brain remembers what it's like to see if you go blind late enough. You don't just lose your memory of sight. Also, you didn't mention anything about us who are already blind helping people out. That would kind of be a big thing. We know how to survive without sight. We'd teach sighted people how to do all things without their eyes. Except for driving, although, we'd teach navigational skills. Point being, and I really don't mean to be an ass, but please do your research before you make videos like this. Interview people from the community. Get to know how they do things, and what their lives are like. Don't just look at articles. You could be completely wrong, like you were about a lot of things. Lastly, again, please be careful about your language. You're looking at it from a sighted person's perspective: especially the thing about unfortunate blind kids. We don't give a shit! We're alive. Things are good. Remember, if you don't know what something is, you don't usually care that you don't have it. It's not a big deal.

Brandon B. I could’ve, but I didn’t want it to be the center of that comment. It’s a thing called VoiceOver (VO). It’s in the accessibility settings of the phones. If you tell Siri to turn on VoiceOver, then you’ll figure out how we’re able to use them. The reason they’re accessible right out of the box, is that VoiceOver’s something programmed into the phones. It’s not a third-party program that needs to be installed by a sighted person. We get the phones, we tell Siri to turn on VoiceOver, and then we can use them. If you wanna know more about VO without turning it on yourself, if you have a smart phone, then look it up on KZread. I particularly like a guy named Tommy Edison.

A hilarious post i've appropriated. Having to Use Braille. Imagine: You've just entered your office on what may well be the most hectic, stressful day of your life. Suddenly you realize all of your Reference books, piles of paper work and notes are covered with little Bumps. In fact, you discover there is not one single printed word to be found. Every scrap of information necessary to do your job is now in Braille. Imagine: you rush back out of your office, wildly looking about, peering Into offices, staring over the shoulders of clerks. Everybody is calmly doing their job, using Braille. Mysteriously they have learned the Language Overnight. Only you, it seems, were overlooked. For some unknown reason, You Are permanently and totally Braille challenged. Imagine: you dash for the door hoping the rest of the world has not gone Mad. It has! In the elevator, you're not sure which button to press for The Lobby. Someone has to help you. They stare at you as if you are stupid. Pausing at the newsstand, you are unable to tell one magazine from another. You can't stand it, you need to go home and collect your thoughts. But at The bus stop, there's no way of telling which coach is yours. You back Away, not wanting anyone to know, and you decide you'll call a cab. Of course, You Only brought bus fare and lunch money, not nearly enough for the taxi. Remembering your bankcard, you pull it out as you run back into the Lobby. There, at the ATM, you stop short. The card has turned to Braille, and so have all of the instructions on the machine. You'll have to call home and ask for help. Funny, you never paid much attention to the telephone dial and now, in your growing state of confusion, you don't recall which number goes where? You are so alone, so frightened, you actually begin to weep. Imagine: you have always seen yourself as a leader, a visionary, a problem-solver. You will not run from this challenge. You shall succeed. You have a large mortgage. Once you have recovered from the great shock, you begin looking for ways to survive. Imagine: you have finally made arrangements, through your employer, to hire a Braille reader, a process so complex and painful you plan to patent it and use it to torture Terrorists. Now you sit in your chair going quietly mad listening to the drone of your reader's voice, taking hours of time to cover what you once scanned in minutes, while others whip about you efficiently communicating among themselves via Braille-FAX and Email. You begin to feel the "ice" in isolation. Imagine: you learn you are not alone. You are a member of a very small minority of Braille-Challenged people. There is, in fact, a Braille-less culture; a history far too long and complex to discuss here. So, you become a member of the, Braille-less Association of America (BAA). At the BAA meetings you find out about a number of small companies manufacturing adaptive equipment which enables Braille-less persons to access all of the Braille computers, FAX machines, Braille scanners and Braillers. The expense is far more than you can afford, so you seek assistance from your employer. Your request is turned down. There are no requirements that your employer accommodate your disability. Imagine: BAA, along with many other disability groups, battle in Congress for the passage of a Bill, guaranteeing you equal treatment under the Law. The bill passes and, despite subtle messages from your fiscal officer, money is, "found" for your accommodation. After considerable time and effort, the technician from the Department of Services for the Braille-less, has you on-line. Now you are able to scan Braille text and convert the little dots into letters, and through a very complex process, the Braille display on your computer is transformed into print. Finally, you are again up to speed, being your old efficient self, feeling good about your work. Imagine: you are humming and smiling and cranking along in high gear. Suddenly, a message flashes on your screen and drives terror through your heart. New breakthroughs in technology have produced equipment so superior to the ancient junk--at least four years old-- presently in use, that your organization is upgrading the entire communications system. The BAA, technicians have already informed you that your adaptive equipment is not compatible with it. You go to the, "Powers-That-Be" in your organization, and request a meeting to discuss this concern. You are told that your fears are groundless. You will not be forgotten. Following this meeting a rumour goes around hinting that you are trying to sabotage the new system, and your associates begin to whisper behind your back. They want the new system. It's far superior, more compact, ten times faster, and it's cool looking. They are sick of your "whining and constant complaining". You feel the "ice" settling in again. Imagine: you have been forgotten. The new system is in place. Everybody loves it. You've been told not to worry; someone will be around to do what is necessary to put you back on-line. The "someone" they had in mind is the same technician who told you the system would not work. Despite your concerns, no one bothered to investigate before the equipment was installed. Once again you sit, going quietly mad while your reader ploughs line by line through the piles of Braille. Imagine: you know you are close to losing your mind or your job--probably both. You must find other employment, but you do not want your associates to know you are finally beaten. You try to figure out a way to do a quiet job search when all information is only accessible in Braille. One day you hear that your State has developed a central information centre, called a, "kiosk". These information centres are being set up in easily accessible locations. The plan is for these kiosks to make government information and services available quickly and conveniently, to the public. Sort of a "one stop shopping centre". You learn that lists of job openings are among the many services offered. This is perfect. This is exactly what you need. You discover your town recently placed a kiosk in the Mall. You go there on Saturday afternoon. There it stands, costing the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars to create, but well worth it. In its ultimate form, the kiosks will bring virtually all State services right into your local neighbourhood. You are thrilled as you step up to the controls. An automated voice welcomes you and brags about the wonders of this system. Breathlessly, you wait for your instructions... Then, the Braille display appears. Imagine: they are dragging you away, shrieking at the top of your voice. Onlookers are amazed. They do not know how you managed to rip the iron bench from the floor of the Mall. None of them dared to try to stop you as you swung it over your head, again and again, smashing the kiosk into pieces of broken plastic, glass and twisted metal. None of them understand why you kept screaming the same words over and over: "I pay taxes too! I pay taxes too! I pay taxes too!"

Braille is a symbol based language that consists of various raised bumps. You feel it with your fingers. Which seems like a pain in the ass, and apparently so if it takes 6 months to learn the English alphabet.

Well, that's still like 6 years less than it takes to learn English alphabet with vision

next time you're in a lift & looking at the floor numbers, have a look around them & somewhere nearby should be the numbers in braille (raised dots). Run your hands over them & if you do that enough, you will easily be able to teach yourself to "read' the braille numbers. You'll also find these dots a lot with other accessible functions, such as on accessible toilet signs. Reading can also be done with audio books or computer screen readers. If you're using windows, you can go into control panel, accessibility options & there should be a basic screen reader there somewhere (depending on which windows version you have). Switch it on & have a go to see how it works

Well, do an experiment. Tie your eyes so that you can't see anything and after like 2 hours or so being like that go to sleep. I tried it, wasn't really that hard, although I felt like it took a bit longer than usually
