What if the USA had a 10-party system?

What if, instead of only two parties, America had 10 parties? How would that work? Or would it be a mistake?

There would most likely be an agrarian party like in Norway serving farmer interests, being centrist ideologically (economic market liberal, and slight lean progressive socially) but very into farmer interests. i.e Farmer's Party. If not because of the size of farmer's in America, it also makes sense historically since IIRC there was farmer interest parties elected in the past in America on the local level and farming politics has always been on the agenda of both Democratic and Republican parties, with Reagan dedicating a portion to it in his infamous "Time for Choosing" speech and JFK answering questions about it during the Nixon debate.

The Libertarian party are the third largest party in America following by the Green Party. The two already have some influence. JJ forgot the already existing big minor parties. If America would change into a multi-party system, transcending the votes to the minor parties would take several or more years since that people will still cling on to two majors to prevent the other major party from winning. Change could still happen as with Americans getting sick and tired of the two parties, but it's a slow process. The change to a multi-party system could be real if Americans are really sick and tired of their two-party system. The party that would probably most benefit (although i'm not in support of them) would be the libertarian party since it's the next right-leaning party in line for the anti-Trump republicans and moderates. They would probably take near half the votes of the GOP since they'll get many moderate votes.

  • @JaredConnell

It is actually very stupid to have a two party duopoly like we have now because most people blindly follow and vote for whoever is running under their party no matter what their actual policies and plans are. And the worst part is they base their decision on very few issues that they feel very passionate about but ignore everything else. So people let their stance on abortion, same sex marriage, and the death penalty pick their vote for them.

If you’re in Brazil the “bipartism” comes from the presidential election, because you only elect one person and there’s a run-off, you end up having some kind of bipartism, even though the Parliament is elected by proportional representation. In Portugal the President does not have as much power as in Brazil but still there is the same logic. Plus the election of the Parliament is not very proportional in Portugal (compared to Germany, Netherlands or Denmark for example) because there are many small constituencies.

Two things: there would *definitely* be a Libertarian party. There are a large number of them who either don't vote or vote inconsistently because they believe there's a fundamental problem with the two party system and don't want to be a part of it. Secondly, i think if we did move to this kind of system, we would probably just do away with the presidency and bicameral system altogether and rewrite the constitution such that we have a judiciary and a parliament and that's it (so basically what all the cool kids are doing). This is also why I don't think this would ever happen - having a new Constitution Convention during a time when America is so divided is just asking for trouble. We wouldn't need a whole new constitution, just an amendment that makes the House of Representatives proportional (and hopefully one altering or removing the electoral college). Countries like France do have presidents separate from their parliament. The whole thing would still be unlikely though as it would hurt the party elites who benefit from the current system, even though it would benefit most people. But I agree about the libertarians; they're already the third biggest party in the US after the Democrats and Republicans, and they would only get more votes in a multi-party system.

I don't doing away with the Presidency and the bicameral system would be necessary. The Philippines (a former Spanish colony and former part of the American Commonwealth) has a multi-party system while still having a President and a bicameral system. Some of the Government is trying to move us to Federalism from Unitarianism via a Constitutional Convention (sometimes called ConCon here), but other than that, the current system works out. Considering the fact that America loves to hold onto tradition, there's a chance that the Republicans and maybe some conservative Democrats would try to stop any change to the constitution, especially one aiming to replace the Congress and Senate with a Parliament and the President with a Prime Minister, it's possible that such a change wouldn't happen. Especially since it's not really necessary.

Right because having more tribes available to choose from gives you less tribalism... what a joke. The two party system is the best available option BECAUSE it reduces tribalism as much as possible. It consolidates people who would likely have conflicting views into two large groups. That is a luxury. If you weren't able to unite with people you disagreed with, you would be at war with them and nothing would get done. You have to be able to have discussions with your enemies- period. If you think it would give a middle-ground party a better chance at getting into office, you may be right- but it all comes down to the individual elected. Finding a balance between left and right is an incredibly complex and psychologically challenging thing to do. The chances that a leader of such a party would be Christ-like is incredibly low and in all likelihood it would be the most corrupt, bureaucratic party out of the bunch. You may as well call the Centrist party the "Fake Party." The denouncement of radicals is still happening within both the republican and democrat parties. Just not during election time when they are trying to get votes. I agree that isn't necessarily good for the public, which is why it is important to uphold a culture of scoffing at politicians and upholding family values.

Individuals cannot have actual personal liberties nor freedom from exploitation by tyranny without the expropriation of the means of production from that same tyranny. The so-called Beltway Libertarians could gravitate towards the Republican Party (if they weren't voting for it already) to differentiate themselves clearly from the Far-Right and the Evangelical Christian Party. Some European Green parties have also gone down that path, even though they started as radical left-wing ecology parties, and I guess that the US Centrist Party, if it existed, would also swallow the current US Green Party. Many towns elected partisan socialist mayors even though many towns had rules to make it a non partisan position.Louisiana was the center of the movement. Funny how the pendulum swing works.

Miguel Laurito Civil Rights movements grew out of classical liberalism, very different from socialism. These socialist movements we are talking about occurred in the late 19th century very early 20th. It’s also important to note that Woodrow Wilson who was a major statist and self described “progressive” was heavily supported by the south. Though Wilson did some for black communities(much of that was not effective) it is well known he was a racist and believed in some pretty dangerous ideas.

KZread already does to some extend, and it's very flawed when it comes to determining fair use. Another problem is that smaller platforms might not be able to afford monitoring their site to the extend that's needed to avoid fines, which makes it way harder to start new platforms. There is an exemption for small sites in the bill, but it is way too tight. The sites has to have been less than 3 years online, make less that 10 million euro turnover annually, and have less than 5 million users a month. Advocates of this law try to make it look like the EU does this all to protect small artists, but for the biggest part it's been promoted by big film/music label lobbyists. National governments will get a lot of freedom in implementing the law, and I'm sure my country will use a very liberal version, since our representatives in the union voted against it in the first place. Still, it could have a huge effect on the internet globally, since the internet doesn't stop at borders. Sorry for the way too long reply btw😉

Candidates from all parties can run for president, one is elected by the general public (and only the general public) and then solemnly swears to be impartial. After the next election for the "Nationalrat" (our equivalent of Congress, I guess), the president then kicks off the building of the actual government by asking the party with the most votes in the election (it usually has between 25 and 35% of the votes) to negotiate with the other parties in order to form a multi-party coalition with over 50% of the vote and form the government.

The M5S (Movimento 5 Stelle) kinda burned itself out on promising more in electoral campaign than they could actually achieve. In the 2018 General Elections they got well over 30% of the votes, but in the 2019 European Elections they got only 17%. Oh, and their ideology is unknown. The only thing they say is "Direct Democracy, Environmentalism, Anti-Europeanism, Populism". It's a kind of party which capitalized on the frustrations of the Italian lower middle class, the unemployed, especially in the less wealthy and developed south (I mean, I live in Southern Italy) and the general anger at the corrupt bipolarized politicians. This anger was magnified when, a few years ago, the Social Democrat Prime Minister resigned after failing a constitutional referendum. Up until that point there were two big parties, the Democrats (Centre-Left Pro-Europe Social Democratic, kinda like Bernie Sanders but more moderate) and the "Forward Italy" (Veeeeeery Moderate Centre-Right Pro-Europe Conservative, like the CDU/CSU in Germany). But then the M5S came in and made some promises which capitalized on the political apathy of many Italians. Also a prominent force arose in the form of the ~Northern~ League, a very hard-line Right-Wing/Far-Right Nationalist Anti-Europe Party. But then, a week ago at the European Elections the M5S lost 15% while the League gained that 15%

I definitely believe the trendy 3rd party would exist, as we have already had that before with the current system a few times, and Ross Perot who later formed the Reform Party may have even won the presidency in 1996 (the vote share doesn’t suggest this as much, but based on voting booth polls, enough Republican and Democrat voters would've voted for him if they thought he had a chance that he may have won

There is a demand for proportional representation and choice voting which would eliminate the spoiler effect.

I ask this because I think, it might be a little different because you could still retain the two chamber design. With the fifty US states, it would be somewhat of an admin nightmare, but getting 26 cantons to play ball doesn't seem that different to me. Getting voting results might take a bit longer due to the sheer size, but it seems to me, like the US already has to manage that anyway.

@@nickarjoma5350 I mean, things like an electoral college get out of hand pretty quickly, which is why you have to limit the people somehow... But have you ever heard of the Landsgemeinde? In geographically small cantons like Appenzell Innerrhoden, you could just invite everyone to meet at a big square... But modern systems with absentee voting for the majority of the people and a place to actually show up to cast the ballot in at least every county office or town hall and so on, I don't see why direct democracy couldn't work, in the swiss interpretation, you still have a parliament running things most of the time, just with the option of forcing a ballot by collecting enough signatures within multiple months and since it's supposed to be a popular opinion, needing some level of decentralized organization for such a thing to happen doesn't seem unreasonable to me. One modification that could also help if administrative things get too big would be to introduce a fourth layer of geographic administration, most likely splitting a large state into a bunch of groups of counties to deal with regional problems. I mean, in 1776, such a system would have been a nightmare, and after expansions, it would have likely failed spectacularily due to the travel times involved, but nowadays you can theoretically get to anywhere in the world within 24h and practically, a few days should get you to almost all territories claimed by the us, so the size shouldn't be that much of a problem anymore, or am I still missing something?

The problem with having a lot of parties is that they tend to get absorbed by the influence of bigger parties in order to survive and they eventually become an extension of it, although they can still change to the influence of another party if the first one loses power. In the case of my country, in the last presidential elections we had 4 big parties (PRI, PAN, PRD and MORENA), 5 non-dominant parties (Green Party, New Alliance, Labor Party, Citizens Movement and Social Meeting Party) and another 4 small and new ones that did not parcipated in the election. That's 13 National Parties. Those four dominants are mostly moderate and close to the center, while the other 6 are a lot more extreme and close to radical ideologies (Labor Party defines itself as a Maoist Communist one, Green Party as a far right in favor of capital punishment and legal torture, Social Encounter as a fundamentalist evangelist party against masturbatation, pornography, condoms, etc.). These parties almost always allie with one of the four big ones (Usually the one closer to it's own ideology) and share the same candidates, so they have a chance to have influence an power. The new ones tend to be funded after an independent candidate loses and they can eventually become part of the Non-Dominant but still relevant ones, and some of them may even become part of the big ones, which was the case of MORENA, that started by the incentive of a candidate that lost two times and decided to create his own party, and is now the biggest and dominant party of the country, with that man being now the president of Mexico and the party having a majority in the congress.Intereatingly enough, some big parties can fall the other way and become Non-dominant and have to allie with a big one to have a chance, which was the case of the PRD.
