What if the Celtic World United?

What if the Celtic nations united as a single country? What would it look like if some of the oldest and most influential nations on Earth were to unite?
Today, we're going to be discussing some of the history of various Celtic peoples and nations, particularly those that managed to survive on the British Isles, and how conflicts with historical powers, famine, war, disease and other events have shaped the Celtic identity throughout history and the modern day, and also the ramifications of the pan-Celtic movement. Thanks for watching!

As a Welshman, I have often thought about a united Celtic country although I think in reaity it would probably be more of an alliance like the EU. More focused on trade and military agreements. Dublin would probably be the capital as it is the probably the biggest city and definitely the most influential on the world stage. I think if it was to happen over hundreds of years you may end up with two main celtic languages being spoken, I think the Irish and Scottish gaelic languages would eventually merge as would the Welsh, Breton and Cornish, probably with English being a Lingua franca. In all honesty although us Celtic nations do get along due to our mutual similarities in culture I don't ever see us being united as a single country due to our differences and our fierce independent natures. But I really think a trade union would be best. Also, i'm very sorry Mason. But just awful pronunciation of "Y Wladfa". The only way i can possibly write it for you to maybe say it correctly would be "Uh Wladva" Anibyniaeth i Cymru!!

Can I point out that a “revival” of the Welsh language doesn’t entirely explain why it’s still so strong in Wales. Yes, it has been revived in South Wales where it had declined through English migration in the industrial revolution. However, the language has always been relatively strong in North and West Wales however, the population of South Wales is bigger due to English migration. This skews the figures. Native Welsh are very much alive and kicking. We are very strong. 700,000 of us about you know..... We just go about our lives without making too much of a fuss however our culture and language is very important to us and we just speak the language without giving it much thought as that’s the language our mothers door to us and their mothers before them. Just look at the Eisteddfod mate 100k people at that festival each day of all ages. Says a lot about our culture.

This sounds magnificent to be honest. As a Scotsman, I've always felt a huge affinity with Ireland. Culture, music, and even the way we speak English - esp the north of Ireland (both sides)r. I went to Wales for the first time in 2015, and I'm so envious/proud you've kept your language unlike us and most of Ireland. I don't hate England at all, but I have such a strong connection with the Irish and the Welsh, which makes me think it has to be in the blood - as you can tell, I'll never be our Foreign Minister but we may well win Eurovision every year with those Irish and Welsh voices plus the sturdy Scots ability to keep playing on the auld Uillean or Piob Mhor. As for language and a Gàidhlig speaker, I can understand Welsh worries about us Goidelics bulldozing it to just ''Croeso'' etc ; but we'll find a way for us all to speak, more so than the Brits did with their Empire. Most English are great, but I'd love a land border with them - they take over without meaning to. Our national anthem would surely Mo Ghille Mear/Fy Machgen Cyflym

What would be the point? Celtic people are an incredibly disunited group. Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man are all very different places with very different people. The only thing that unites you lot is your hatred for the English. Not a very strong basis for unity. As soon as you leave the UK you'll soon realise you don't have a bogeyman anymore, no one to blame all of your problems on and you'll turn on each other. Not to mention most sane people aren't interested in a 'celtic union'. Also uh, have fun getting Brittany on board. You think the UK is bad, France has mastered the process of assimilation. They'll never let Brittany go.

Masaman, as always, great video! Just wanted to say I was happy you mentioned Scots isn't a Celtic language. As a "Scots speaker" I just wanted to point out that the Scots dialect changes every 10 miles... and I'm not exaggerating. Colloquialisms will change quite drastically, as will the accent itself change from town to town. It is highly insular in that regard. My point, the Scots spoken in Aberdeen is going to be different from the Scots spoken in Orkney, Inverness, Glasgow, or Edinburgh. To say any of it is influenced by one thing is impossible, because of how rapidly the words used changes from town to town. Obviously you're on the money to say it's mostly English and Irish influenced, although there is a tiny bit of Welsh (through root words to old "Pictish", such as aber, pit, dun etc) I wanted to let you know that some of it seems to come at random. Bairn (meaning child), dreich (meaning grim), glaikit (meaning stupid), bonnie (meaning pretty) and braw (meaning good looking) come to mind, I'm not entirely sure of their etymologies but I wouldn't say bairn or glaikit is of obvious Irish, Welsh, or English origins... Some of these words seem to came about entirely by themselves, used mostly in one region, that maybe over time will get adopted into wider use among Scots. For example, all Scots speakers know the meanings of those words, but where you grew up in Scotland probably dictates if you will ever use them in actual speech. Bairn could be 'babi' (which I think is Welsh/possibly old Pict), but it could also be 'wee-un' depending on if you're north, south, east or west of the country.

@@orangedude7632 your answer gives it away. In Europe they are Ulster Scots, in America they are Scots-Irish. The groups are closely related, but have some key differences. I'm descended from Ulster Scots in America. They were fond of the monarchy, proud that their Scottish brogue constituted "The King's English," and (until my father's generation) hated Catholics with a passion due to their history in Northern Ireland. These are not characteristics of the Scots-Irish, who historically were extraordinarily populist in the political and religious inclinations (many would be suspicious of Catholics too, but only because they followed an organized religion). The key factor is when they came over. My ancestors immigrated to the United States around 1900. By contrast, most Scots-Irish immigrated in the eighteenth century. Let me leave you with a quote by social historian James G. Leyburn: "Migration from Ulster, interrupted by the [American] Revolution, began again soon thereafter...These later comers, however, did not seek out Scotch-Irish [sic] communities in their country of adoption; they went instead to whatever places economic opportunity offered the best chance for making a home, as did the steady migration of Scots direct from Scotland. No doubt they, too, made their contributions to American life, but they did so as individuals, not as members of a Scotch-Irish community." Here's why it would never happen, taken from the intro of the "Early Irish Myths and Sagas" book: "It is the Gaulish scriptures and inscriptions that attest to the true nature of the Celtic religion - no pantheon, but rather localised deities with localised functions; and this accords with what we know about the Celts politically, for they had little tolerance for centralised authority, even their own.” At some point the Celts seem to develop a culture quite distinct from other barbarian peoples - the Germanic tribes and Scythian nomads who commonly formed tribal confederacies. The Celts seem to have long been a lot more resistant to that idea, that might have been their main weakness when faced with successive Roman, Saxon and Norse invasions.

@GrandmasterFunk Also worth noting that any notions of unifying kings are usually myths, some tied to later romantic ideals, or perhaps a romantic image of the past clung onto by Celts living in a, by then, unified England and Wales ruled by one king. The idea of Arthur being the "king of Britain" is a later invention - if you look at the sources in the original pagan myths, he was more of a Heracles-type figure, a similar warrior cult, and talk of a "King of Ireland" is similarly fictional, they had high kings, but not a "king of Ireland" as such. If back then they couldn't even unite one country, they're not likely to unite what's left of Celtic territory as a whole. No reason they should, but it is a shame they seemed to lack organisation and coordination that allowed the Germanic tribes to not only resist Roman invasions, but sack Rome multiple times and bring the empire to its knees..

@@TheGreatGodPan That's true the kingdoms of past are essentially the 4 provinces we have today. The Kingship of Tara had the mythological ideal of a national kingship due to the sacred significance of the place. I always perceived a beauty in the fractured state of the individual provinces with their own spiritual and mythological customs but with regards to it's effectiveness as you mentioned against foreign invasion left much to be desired.

Robert Kelly The celts did sack Rome at least once that I know of. It's why they wanted to 'pacify' Gaul and ultimately subjugated them. Rome was generally more interested in the riches of the Mediterranean and the trade it moved. Other Mediterranean cultures were more similar to Rome as a result of inhabiting the same region and thus were more easily integrated into Rome.

Robert Kelly Also, the tribes worked together to defend against Rome several times, two famous leaders of such cases are Vercingetorix and Boudicca. Also, the Germans benefitted from learning from Roman tactics and military technology from their time as mercenaries for the Romans. Things are never as black and white as they seem.

*I have an idea for a new category based on your "what if Antarctica had natives?" video from a few years ago. There are still handfuls of island groups and pockets of land that potentially could support people. Investigate the idea of what would happen if native peoples had gone to these places as well? A lot of it would be a stretch, but that's the fun of it! If you want, I can make a list of places you can do this on if you'd like. I'm not concerned about any copyright things with ideas I suggest on here, so get creative with them if you'd like. For example, the best place to do this offhand would be the Kerguelen Islands at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
