I think a large reason why john freaked out with power the way he did to Arlo and blake is that no one has said sorry for their actions against John. No one has said forgive me. Everyone around him acts like they have some sort of moral high ground. I think the frustration he feels comes from the lack of self-awareness others have for their actions. That is also why I believe the author has made a very flawed narrative. Because Blake, Arlo, and the blonde hair guy who figured out John's past have no self-awareness of what I have done wrong and I should apologize.

@ shlok rai I’m with you. Arlo kind of did... but it was half hearted and in the midst of trying to stop John. Never confessed in public form, Asian culture shows kowtow etc, but nothing sincere. All, all royals; sera, Arlo, Issen, Blyke, injured John... and on several occasions. Never showing an apology. Only one who genuinely tried was Remi. #bestgirl I want her and John to ship... but idk. I’m hoping he goes full vigilante and changes the worlds system. Go Leluech on everyone. To me, that be ideal. But idk... where the story is going now, Arlo (the attempted murderer) along with Blyke (another attempted murderer; threw John out a 3 story building w a sucker punch), and sera (the self absorbed friend) are all getting their own arcs and limelight. Imo anytime John is not in focus, the story lessens. John is an original MC... anger, etc no redemptive qualities. It’s actually both, he did it as punishment since he constantly brutalized people and wanted to punish himself for all the things he did, it’s also since whenever he activates his ability John get’s corrupted by power and constantly brutalIzes anyone who crosses him.

This post was a while ago, but John’s idea of himself was mainly focused on separating himself from his ability, allowing himself to cope with the things he did by making himself feel like what he did wasn’t him, it was the ability. This caused him to resent his ability, as not a part of him, but a separate thing apart from him that caused him to get corrupted every time he used it. He thought everything was his ability’s fault, therefore he doesn’t use it because he fears he’ll be corrupted by himself, or rather his ability. This causes a complex within him, simultaneously making him feel weak when a cripple, and much too powerful when he is not.

My opinion on it is that the issue is with the world itself rather than John. Those in power have extremely strong abilities, so they've made everyone believe strong abilities means you must be important. This created the system of Royals where even the youngest students fight each other for dominance, all the while those in control of everything allow themselves to grow even more powerful. Anyone who breaks this order like John, those who tear everything down around them into anarchy, is broken to the point where they can no longer function as a member of this society. John tries to escape and protect himself and others by becoming a cripple, thinking this to effectively separate himself from the cycle of fighting. Unfortunately for him, however, this is only a temporary solution, with him eventually falling into a pattern of repeating his past mistakes almost to the letter. If anything this shows that John may have some form of PTSD from the 'lessons' given to him before becoming a cripple. By being forced to constantly relive his mistakes and pain, it's ingrained it into his memory, so when the events begin mirroring themselves in his new school, he falls back into his old ways, even calling Seraphina by the name Claire in his most deluded. My guess on the future of the series is that Seraphina will realize this, working with the other characters to try and free John from this cycle by showing that people can change for the better and that he can finally escape the cycle of fighting. Or he'll just go see an actual therapist because god does he need one. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Same here, John is smart, a good fighter, strategic, and has potential, but his judgment is clouded with negative emotions, lack of trust, and bad influences that cause him to make irrational decisions.

Making smart decisions doesn't make you to live a life without hate. Till there is love there is hate. We will still get targeted by Arlo and get emotionally fu*ked. Like said in the video their world is different to ours. What we think is unreasonable or unjustifiable might be reasonable and justifiable in their.

I feel like the only way for John to regain his sanity is if Volcan/EMBER attack the school looking for either Remi or Blyke, with Seraphina, Asslo and Isen getting involved and John doing something against EMBER.

Tbh, I think that John's issue will be resolved due to Seraphina trying to help and understand him, even after all he has done to her (I really do love her, btw, she's just such a good person). I think she will heal John's mind, and then Ember will attack, or John will go after Ember. John will crush them, but learn about their connections to the Authorities. Thus, John will then take down the Authorities as well, but I think he will die in the process, due to the fact that he is represented by the hero in the book of "Unordinary." This is the idea I have come up with. What do you guys think?

I think maybe the reason why John decided to be a cripple is because for a way for him to atone and also he felt like he doesn't deserve to have power

Well, in my opinion, him saying he’s a mid-tier wouldn’t work out in the first place. Ever since Sera asked that question, I’ve always thought of that answer time again. John’s power level varies, depending on what powers he copies or mimics. And yes, in the original, he can copy up to 4. But let’s say he’ll only copy one or two abilities to make it LOOK like he’s a mid-tier. If that’s the case, then it’ll be just like Sky Chef said. John would just gain too much attention upon himself. Once he pretends that he can only copy 2 abilities, more people would challenge him in larger groups. Once that happens, John would either take a lot of beatings as he was a cripple, or reveal that he can copy more than just 2.

@@alvinchen9655 That’s his passive ability; only accessible to high tiers. However, this would probably keep him at bay, but also make him a total target. Why? Let’s say he lies about his true ability. He says that his power is to sense auras rather than mimic them. This would mean his lying ability power level would be very low, just like the low tiers. If he were to lie about his true power, this makes him an easy target. Also, don’t forget that John shows no fear at all. This could also be a bad thing in an attempt to hide. If he shows no fear to mid or high tiers beating him up, then they’ll become very suspicious of him. But let’s say for his sake that he faked his fear too? If that’s the case, then it’ll be the same thing over again. He’ll soon become enraged, feeling helpless, etc. He’ll probably want revenge against those who wronged him. This may or may not change his friendship with Sera, but I don’t really think that’s relevant. Anyways, TL;DR is no matter how much we try to change this, I see no possibility John could actually have a better life, due to horrible society he’s born in. He could pretend to be weak, but he’ll always gain attention whether that’s good or bad. Some events will still be the same.

@@neutralball1099 I mean that he could seem like a high level user with a boring power, Juni had a power that was better for support and yet when John attacked her, she got curious as if her being attacked unprovoked was strange for her, we also see elaine who still has admirers and respect from high tiers specifically because she's a support, as long as John keeps his eye glowing as he's sensing around with his friends he's pretty much fine.

@@alvinchen9655 In the world of Unordinary, power levels are determined by 5 categories: Power, Defense, Trick, Recovery, and Speed. Being able to read auras doesn’t really have any of those benefits, hence why it would be a low tier. Also, there aren’t any “high level user with a boring power”. They’re only high tiers, because of their use of ability. They can alter their abilities to do many things. It’s even shown in the Unordinary series too. Uru-Chan even compared two identical abilities. Blyke’s and a mid tier student. The reason why Blyke is higher is because he has more knowledge, power, and tricks to use with his ability. He can shoot lasers out of 4 fingers, form a giant laser with both of his hands, and used his aura as some sort of shockwave. The mid tier student has only been able to shoot lasers out of its hand, hence why they’re ranked lower. John’s passive ability would be considered a low tier, simply because it only meets in the Trick and Power category. Being able to read auras isn’t recovery, isn’t speed, or defense. It’s power is very weak, since it’s not a offensive or defensive ability type.

Can i say if Keon teach John and not torturing him...maybe he can handle better his power? Because this is the problem he can't handle his power...but in the end they force him to be the King. ... ... ... it's so pitufull and sad... really he is a lost child. Ah! I want to say i am a bit pissed at Isen because this phrase " he even worth it "... this make me realize that...the Royal don't belive to be responsable of this situation. Like really Isen? You spy on him, hurt him and expose him as the King....when you know, you know he wasn't able to handle the title and he doesn't want it. I know they are teen, they are not bad. ..but... really? I agree with ShyChef, I can’t see another way for John to deal with his situation. I liked the addiction analogy, because it makes more sense once you start thinking about it. At first I also though it was a form of punishment, but that is not the case. Alcoholics/addicts avoid places that are likely to trigger a relapse. It works some of the time, but despite their efforts; some do relapse. The same thing goes for John. John completely avoided the use of his ability by playing cripple and excluding himself from the hierarchy, but the situation at Wellston made him fall back into that dark path again. To be honest, it took a lot to break John. Seraphina’s suspension, Arlo ambushing him, Sera losing her ability, Zeke and other students picking on her, all that plus the constant beat downs he received on a daily basis. In episode 84, after Zeke beats John up, Isen finds him, and said, “First he gets into all those complications with Arlo, and now he’s beaten like this, even with Seraphina back. At this rate, he won’t hold up.” Going into Wellston as both mid-tier and god-tier, would have made the process go a lot more faster. Now, I would have like if John was a bit more honest to himself and more trusting. I understand that he can’t be totally honest. I mean saying, “Hey, I’m playing cripple cause I’m trying to avoid the hierarchy due to the fact that I was a horrible person and I beat up half my class back at my old school,” is hard to nearly impossible. My point is I wish he was more trusting towards Seraphina when she asked him if he’s okay. Same with Arlo when he pushed him, saying, “Act your rank”, “I wouldn’t trust anyone else but myself”, or “Fix it yourself”. John could’ve been a bit honest, by telling Arlo, “I can’t act my rank cause I can’t handle the pressure that comes with being a high ranker”, or “I don’t know how to be a good king”, “I have no trust in myself”, and lastly, “I can’t fix it because I’ll end up making it worse, everything always does.” If only the school would have listened. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can relate to John in a similar way. I just can’t see another way and I would do the same thing. (Sorry if I’m ranting too long 😅 just this was a really good discussion video)

You should make a What If video about what would happen if John took his father's advice and tell Seraphina the truth. Instead of pretty much ignoring what his father said.

mid tier are more problematic then the high tiers. The people at the top only fight to be all high and mighty. Low tiers try to stay out of it. But the middle always fight just to climb the later Juts to feel superior for those at the bottom.

Personally I would kind of say John's actions are justified. He's making a mockery out of the hierarchy and just beating them without an actual reason which was what the mid-tiers did. However, the brutality is quite extreme, but, I dont blame him. He's endured enough abuse, almost getting a beating for an entire year plus his childhood.. Yikes... Also, where's Elaine? She hasn't been showing up lately..

I wonder what would happen if guys like Peter Parker, Miles Morales, barry allen, Geo stellar, Deku, and even Sonic were transported to this world? It honestly needs more beacons of positivity, I think these characters would try to uproot the system and make things fair for everyone, both with and without powers. They would certainly be strong enough to do so.

Actually i personally dont think he lost that belief but the ppl dont deserve to know about it. Remember that scene where he was venting about weaklings with no back bone n n high teirs that uses there power for the most pettiest reasons. He dont believe the ppl shouldnt have that knowledge.

No he did loose it: when questioned by keon, he passed because while the message of the book is "respect everyone" and that society want him to think "respect only the powerful" what john really thinks right now is that no one, including himself is worthy of respect, sera exepted(well until the joker thing)

A lot of these comments are vying for Sera and John to date, but that would not only completely change the tone of the series, but also wouldn't work between these two characters. Nonetheless, have fun shipping 😅

Actually John enrolling as a cripple is good idea for his objective of not getting involved with hierarchy, like seraphina questioned that why did he not enrolled as mid tier, to answer that, let's look at what John power is. Aura manipulation which is way cooler and stronger ability to have even if declared himself mid tier, he would be instant royalty which would have him in hierarchy, which he did not want to be a part of, to begin with. What is he gonna say about his ability, laser beam or lightning or some shit, because he has none of these but he can replicate and amplify them in a fight if he see these abilities. Actually this question is a no brainer to begin with

I love that john was seraphina light in season 1 and help her change for the better and now in season 2 is time for seraphina to become hes light save him from this destructive path be able to be together again and I hope that arlo, blyke never become friends with john after the last chapter in the fast pass blyke just prove how much of a hypocrite he is😄

@ 0-0 Studios Lol 1. Blyke never helped John out... 1.5 years of being tortured and no high tier helped him 2. John angered him once, and shot a beam at his head 3. Blyke only helped him to nurse office because Issen said to (obviously for ulterior motives) 4. In his sanctioned matches (which he warned Remi about) he sucker shot John and put a hole in him 5. When in safehouse John didn’t hurt anyone (yet... probably would have), Blyke literally sucker punched him out a 3 story building onto cement (is this wasn’t a. A world of super powers and B. John who can copy any ability who happens to be quick thinking and super reflexes he would have got seriously hurt/dead)... anywhere else in a court of law we would call this* attempted manslaughter. Check it out 6. He doesn’t do vigilantism to help people, over and over again he states it that he’s doing it to get stronger SO THAT he can beat John. That’s 6 observable FACTS that occurred. Don’t even need to go more. He’s a bottom 5 selfish character: Him, arlo, zeke, Cecile and sera are all objectively bad people (if we are looking at motives and morals objectively)

@@SS-lz6cb Alright. Let’s debunk this Cool. That’s true, but saying he is a hypocrite because of that doesn’t work when he clearly changed Uru confirmed that this was a *warning* shot. We don’t even see where the laser was in comparison to John’s head, sure he had to dodge it, but even then nothing suggests he can sense it perfectly. It could just be that the beam was near his head but didn’t actually hit it. Blyke may be Isen’s friend, but he still frequently gets in arguments with him. It wouldn’t make sense for Blyke to carry John, wasting his time on someone he doesn’t like, all because Isen said so. Cool. Joker slams Arlo’s head into the ground, riddled Blyke’s body with holes and beat Isen to a bloody pulp. This really isn’t a big deal John was literally about to punch Sera and Blyke literally sees multiple students injured and let’s not forget the low tier John attacked for little to no reason. If it was the real world Blyke wouldn’t have even accomplished that, considering he needed his ability to do it. So we just going to ignore him going out to fight Lennon, all because he saw low tiers get hurt, hell, in the actual fight he was considering not fighting him, but the moment a Low Tier is injured he steps in. Did you really ignore that?

I love your content on Unordinary! This is by far my favorite web toon, and I think a lot about it. I would like to pose a question though: could John be even stronger than he is right now? I ask this because in many comics that I have read about people with abilities, there is frequently the most powerful person being able to copy abilities. However, John is different. His ability is called "Aura Manipulation," not something like the "copier" ability in Zero Game. That means that copying and ability is a manual process, as shown in his flashbacks. Could this have an effect on new applications to his ability? Idk if other people think about this sort of stuff like I do, but I have thought a lot about this question I have posed, and thought I would post it to see if anyone else had thought on it.

Well Arlo doesn’t give a shit about John. Blyke really doesn’t care about John. He mainly hates John because he beat the crap out of his friends. I mean yeah he had a reason but cmon you certainly wouldn’t like someone if they beat your friends to a bloody pulp. Blyke also most likely hated John because even after Blyke tried to make amends with John, he beat the shit out of him. He humiliated him. Even after Blyke wanted to be friends. That would piss anyone off. Not to mention how John didn’t apologize. He also keeps trying to destroy the Safe House,which was meant to make Wellston better. Blyke would hate him for that because even though John went on and on about how he wanted to make the school better, here he is making it worse.

@@ozankara4915 My only problem with that is, why create the safe house to dethrone Him? What’s that going to do to him. I mean maybe to gather up students but how would that work? Most students wouldn’t join. In fact it make things worse for the Royals as when John gets pissed off he would probably tear it down and show the other students not to disobey the King’s rule. I don’t understand why John would think that

I like both john and joker character Especially joker because in my eyes i see him as the representation of a doppelganger or a shadow like my favorite quote from bleach "this time your enemy is you." It fits joker character and his ability. The hierarchy lost to themselves and are now feeling the consequences of a single power system tyrant with a even worst attitude then them.

John finally gets redemption arc, also, he could've said "Well my ability is kinda complicated... and i don't want to go to my dark past"

Well, shoot! First off, thanks for the video! I didn't even think to have John be a mid-tier, I completely forgot that part! I was more thinking that he'd revealed his power in front of Elaine, and people actually manage to have to respect him, he stays out of the king position, Arlo attacks him, and John beats him worse then he did in the original, leaving him unconscious in the field because he actually showed his full power ability, and still says the dethroning threat. As a result, everything goes the same that a normal powerful high-tier but in John's case. He ends up becoming a little lost, and Seraphina never loses her ability because they wouldn't hang out, and she never would've gone to Kovoro Mall. She ends up challenging John (still unsure on how that fight ends out, for this I'll say stalemate) and he goes on with his normal life, and things go from there, and Isen and the others like Cecile and Terrence would never had written a story about him. Cecile never ends up following John although tries to push him in the hierarchy again and he relapsed, beating Cecile with her own ability. Rumors begin to spread, and they make John even more angry and less sane. Then he is forced back into the hierarchy, doing the Joker arch without Joker and without the mask. Blyke becomes terrified of John and starts to become Nobody (crab rave music intensifies) and he gets dragged up into the same mess before, with Kuyo and Isen complaining to Remi and Blyke about not paying the bill. Safe house never starts, because they don't realize the issue with the hierarchy. (JOHN NEVER WEARS HAIR GEL YAY) and things become out of my sight because I am not caught up with unOrdinary fast passes and I will not leak spoilers. There are just some parts that I cannot cover because it hasn't happened yet.

Now I want to ask one question of another time line, what if John as a cripple by day, chose to become a superhero by night ? What outcome would happen here ?

I doubt Arlo would have gone after john if he pretended to be a mid tier as the reason he did in the actual timeline was because John was disrupting the hierarchy by being friends with seraphina and making her leave the queen position and the hierarchy itself

I think i know why he enrolled as a cripple because if he was a mid tier he would have a power but he has to try and get that power every single day and if elaine asked him that when he enrolled as a mid tier he would probaly have nothing to say

Now I’m wondering what would have happened if John was taken by the group that Leilah is part of. Would he lose his powers or partially lose his powers? Would he learn how to use his powers responsibly or would he continue to abuse them?

I tend to wonder what would have happened if John just pretended to have an obscure mental ability to fit into the mid ranks.

He could make better choices but John needs to be more developed. That means we have to develop him before the comic starts but after the New Bostin Incident. That's the only way that John could make better choices.

Changing because you learned is better than changing becuase you are scared.

What if john becomes a superhero

As someone who always overthinks morals and ethics I have to say this is a masterpiece cuz I’m so conflicted. However, I think if we say that the whole school is bad,then we must also accept that John is just as bad. Just cuz they deserved punishment doesn’t mean that John doesn’t have blood on his hands. Punishment can only go so far until u become another villain yourself

I would say John is possibly scared of his abilities because of the three months of torture when he was expelled so he probably decided to not use his power at all

I feel like you hit no many proverbial nails on the head: -John knows he shouldn’t lead -another aspect, John might have wanted a “retry” as well. Let’s do this without going crazy... then got drug back into it. -Remi might have been closer w him -Arlo is trash and would’ve went the same route -Issen because of Arlo would’ve done the same -Blyke might’ve been “cool” with him -sera would have not been friends w John. She’s so self absorbed and is looking to “break the mold”. An average mid-tier would not have gotten a second glance. Your analysis puts her type of character on spot. I have never liked her as a character.

I often think about multiple timelines akin to the Fate/Stay Night routes. What if John befriended Remi instead of Sera? What if he somehow befriended Elaine instead of Sera? The friendship with Remi could’ve definitely happen but I imagine a friendship with Elaine would be do to her being tsundere for John.

I just imagine if we took unOrdinary rules into real life, like we just randomly beat the crap outta people in wheelchairs for no reason

The only good route would be for john to tell Sara about his ability in the cripple route

I personally think if he had become a mid tier he wouldn’t have even met Seraphina in the cake scenario because Seraphina chose John to ask for the cake from because he is at the bottom of the hierarchy so she probably would have asked someone lower than him.

I can only imagine if John entered Wellston as himself not a cripple or mid tier just his high tier self

What if instead of saying he's a mid tier with the ability to copy abilities, he posed as an elite tier who could only see and enhance auras? Seeing auras would just mean you can't ambush him, handy but not super strong on it's own but still hard for someone to mess with. But the second one would be the key, the ability to amplify auras. That's exactly what he is doing when he amplifies abilities after all and if he poses as a elite tier, he could get away with saying that he can amplify the abilities of others. Edit: I know this idea has issues, I just thought it would be an interesting what if. Edit 2: Bored from one year since the comment was posted here. We got an update to how his ability works so scroll down if you don't mind the spoiler from the current arc post Joker. So, he can basically see someone's stats meaning instead of saying he can amplify someone, he can just saw that he can judge how strong someone is by looking at them while their ability is active. That would allow him to be support that is given respect like a healer since knowledge is power. It would also make people less likely to want to challenge him as its not a power based ability and it runs the risk of him exposing your strengths and weaknesses to people you don't want knowing them.

There is one way around it start homeschooling for real and doesn't have to go near the hierarchy

During an AMA, uru-chan said spoilers ;) (with this exact answer) to the question of whether there would be romance in the series. My guess it will be about future relationships that we haven’t seen yet or haven’t developed yet like Doc and Leilah and maybe some of the parents of the main characters, but it wouldn’t be the main topic of the story but help progress the plot. I do see some development with the main cast in terms of romance, but it wouldn’t have that much attention compared to the main plot and their development outside of romance.

I only have one thig to add to this and that's the fact that John could have befriended other low tiers. Thinking about it he could have made friends with other low tiers and fought with them. but then.... he would have also become corrupt again. So to conclude.. John just needs some intense therapy

I feel like if John got his ability at a younger age it would have been better he could learn the great power comes great responsibility but because he didn’t he lost himself in all the rage he has

I love your analysis on what might have been. Becoming a cripple/lowtier was the logical way to go (from John his point of view anyway) The problem with the plan was just that John is a horrible actor. He really sucks at pretending to be a lowtier. Arlo almost immediatly picked up on the fact that John acts like a godtier the moment he met him.

I realize it might be stupid now that i think about it, but my original theory on why he went cripple was that he saw how happy his dad was as a cripple, and he associated being a cripple with happiness. So he decided to try and do it for awhile, and it worked.(till Arlo came along) But i see there is a lot of mistakes with my little thing so yea. Your welcome whoever reads this i just wasted 10 seconds of your day

At first I was shipping it, but now it just doesn't sit quite right with me. Maybe in a season or two, but John isn't exactly in the right place right now, and Sera is just trying to understand why he's doing what he's doing and get him to come to his senses. It's what any sensible best friend would do, in my opinion. The relationship would need a lot of developing, considering they aren't even friends right now.

@@samyalthang2651 We’re not gonna have later seasons tho, Uru-chan confirmed herself that unordinary will have just about 3 seasons, and we’re around half way of season 2, unless she has been doing major planning since she took a break i don’t think JohnxSera will happen.

But why or how would he actually loose control if he started the school off with being known as a high tier? It’s not like much people would want to bother him.

What if John didn’t turn into a brick wall in the 2nd season?
