What If Awakening Had Personal Skills?

Correction: I learned after I'd finished editing that awakening DOES have defender. I just didn't know because paladin kinda sucks in awakening. Since I'd already finished editing, I'm leaving the mistake in. If you see anyone commenting to correct the mistake, they didn't read the description, so you're cooler than them. you're so cool for reading the video description.
I love personal skills. They add a ton of character to units while interacting with mechanics in (usually) interesting ways. As such, I thought it would be cool to theroycraft personal skills for all of the games that don't already have them. I've done a few other games already, but now it's time to tackle the game that saved the franchise, Awakening. The goal isn't so much "balance" as it is "fun" and "flavor", though if something can help make a unit more enjoyable to use, its a nice bonus.

Henry is my favorite character in Awakening. With this in mind, here's my idea for a personal skill for him. Echoing Laughter: inflicts crit avoid -20 on foes within 3 spaces until end of next turn after killing an enemy. One of the big things that defines Henry that you didn't mention is Henry's maniacal, almost unsettling laughter even amidst the bloodshed. This laughter unsettles the enemies closest to the slaughter, making them more susceptible to meeting a grizzly fate themselves.

Here's another idea. Corvus Friend: For 2 turns after killing an enemy, unit's movement is not impeded by terrain. I just like this idea because of Henry's introduction, warning Chrom of a Risen ambush after appearing from the center of a giant murder of crows. By killing an enemy, Henry feeds his avian friends, and they return the favor by aiding his mobility. Decided to make it for 2 turns so he can actually benefit from the movement on the following turn. Though it might be a bit redundant since you can always reclass Henry into Trickster which gets that Acrobat skill at level 15 which does the exact same thing with no setup.

I really liked a lot of these. If I could change any of them, Ricken, Tharja, and Noire feel a bit...for lack of a better word, misguided of their characters? Ricken does admire Chrom but more of his supports is centered around making a name for himself for his family. So something like "Wish for fame: When dual attacking does +5 damage but gains no experience". Tharja doesn't actually focus on Robin nearly as much as it seems. The only supports she has that really concern Robin are Henry's Vaike's, and Libra's, and barely Libra's(Robin is mentioned once in the S-support and considering the only time Robin is mentioned in her endings outside of his is Kellam's gag ending it's pretty clear she got over it or just didn't consider it the same kind of emotion). Her character is much more about her dedication to hexes and curses, so something more basic like "Dark Desires: Has +10 Hit and +1 Damage with Dark Tomes" fits better in my opinion. For Noire, her personality thing triggers randomly and isn't even certain it's because of Tharja, or if it's just from the Risen stuff, or something she's born with. I honestly think just making it weirder works better. "Explosive Temper: +10 crit, -10 crit dodge", because she might randomly burst out.

I actually feel like Robin should have the man of the people skill. Or if you wanna meme, makes it so everyone within 3 spaces of him gets the boost. As for chrom, I'd actually give him "strength of bonds" which doubles the boost he gets from supports. I think lucina's skill would actually fit better if it worked on her pair up PARTNER, rather than herself. She's not necessarily worried for her own sake, but for everyone else. So something like "if pair up partner is about to take lethal damage, increase dual guard chance by skill/2". I also feel like nah would make more sense with nowi's skill, while nowi should have something like "playtime: every time unit enters combat, get +2 hit and +1 crit until unit's next action" so if you throw her at a bunch of units on enemy phase, she's gets a big boost. Referencing her nah support where she pretty much calls training playing.

A few alternate/changed personal skills. Frederick: Fanatical Fitness - It increases the exp gained of all allies within a 3 tile radius by x2 for one turn. Rally Exp. This is to add to Frederick's utility past being a lead combatant. Either use him as a stat backpack to carry a weaker unit or as a rallybot and try to get other units stronger, faster. It also plays to one of his non-duty related character traits. The bonus could be x1.5 for promoted units or generally if x2 is too high. Lon'qu: Gynophobia - When paired with a female unit, this unit gains +Hit/Avoid. In universe, he's trying to avoid his pair up partner/end the fight early to get away from his partner. If that's too beneficial, then he could also get -2 damage that decreases as the support rank gains, completely fading at A rank. Cordelia: Prodigious - This unit gains passive/increased weapon exp when paired/adjacent to a unit with the same weapon type(s). There could even be an extra hidden mechanic where she gains more sword/lance exp when adjacent to Chrom. Libra: Martyrdom - Add half accrued damage as potency to healing. It's Vengeance for Staves. It plays both to his religious fervor and his darker nature. Tharja: Warding Curse - It increases the Defense and Resistance of a single ally by +2 for one turn, +4 to Player's My Unit. A single target rally Personal Skill that belies her more helpful nature and preference to Robin. Personally the moments that make me like Tharja, specifically don't involve Robin. But since it's such a big part of her character, I added the preferential treatment to Robin.

Inigo could have a personal skill that gives him a dance command that has buffs similar to the Nils/Ninnian rings. They didn't give him a dancer reclass for obvious gameplay reasons, but he is explicitly stated and shown to be a dancer and I think involving that is more interesting than just a stat buff for being around women. Not a bad idea mind you, I just think a buffing dance would be cool, considering its not something we see too often. We also don't have enough male dancers, if you ask me. Also it's an ability that isn't inherently broken or bad, as its usefulness depends purely on the values of the buff.

I personally think the hit/avoid buff better suits him as not only does it play into his personality as a philanderer but he's also quick on his feet like a dancer would be

you asked for nah skills, so i share with you the nah skill i thought of a while ago. Forgotten Strength: Unit gains +1STR/MAG/DEF/RES each turn until engaging in combat (MAX+5). this is based on a funny quirk she has in supports where she forgets she can turn into a dragon? her one with f!morgan is a really good example. nah spends the whole chain learning how to block a wyrmslayer with her hands only to realise the technique is useless because she doesn't fight in human form and her dragon arms are too small. the cap exists for balance but it's not 100% needed i guess. even 5 turns is a pretty long time to just NOT USE one of your units. this was part of a series of skills i thought of for all the second gen units. they were made in a 3houses context, so not all of them are applicable, but here's some other ones i thought of: lucina -> Unit can perform Dual Strikes even when non-adjacent to an ally, as long as enemy is within unit's attack range. (kind of similar to her engage skill, basically lets her break open the game's signature mechanic as she should) brady -> Intimidating Glare: Unit is less likely to be attacked by enemy units. (literally what you gave kellam except you can't turn it off LMAO. based off the way he looks. enemies don't care if he's staff-locked, they see his face and they don't want to fucking try) severa -> Aiming for Victory: Unit deals +4 damage when attacking an enemy that can counterattack. (THE COUNTERPART TO BERUKA'S SKILL THAT SELENA SHOULD HAVE HAD. not taking criticism here. doing more damage when facing a counterattack also fits well with her character imo) gerome -> When unit is adjacent to a Dragon-class ally, ally and unit both deal +3 damage. (local teenager knows lots about dragons so can support them to fight better. and also secretly gets excited around them so fights better himself. good vid! it was really interesting to hear your thoughts, especially on the first gen units as i've never considered what skills they'd have

Lots of really fun skills in here, especially Stahl’s. One I would change is Robin. I don’t really like the idea of Robin having a skill involving reclassing before the player even knows what that is. Instead, I’d go with this: Clear Mind When Robin’s HP is full, all allies gain +5 hit/avo. Robin is the tactician, telling everyone what to do, so giving everyone a buff when they’re in peak condition makes sense to me. Maybe give Generalist to Morgan so they can get some immediate use from their parent’s skills.

I do have my own suggestion for skills Libra: Light and dark When Unit attacks grants +3 attack, spd and magic but -2 def and res, when unit heals/staffs grants + 3 def, res and spd but - 2 atk and magic. Effects last until end of battle/Chapter or if actived again. Libra's a intresting character who's impied to to have darker side in tharja's supports, has a lot of self loathing/doubt of himself even considering being a hypocrite for killing people and healing others with the same hand. His heart is surrounded by darkness, throught the abuse and abandoment of his parents, Yet in the future he ends up building a orphanage and giving so many people light. The skills's a mix of life and death and adaptability. Yarne: Coward If unit is not at full HP, Grant +20 Avoid and -2 Str/Mag. Sorta self explanatory. Nah: Familiar bonds When paired up with a parent/sibling/lover grant a bonus to dual guard and dual attack depending in support level. (+10% for C, 15% for B, +20% for A or S.) Nahs a hard character to do, but i tried by best. Shes all over in personality in her support conversations. My mini-theory is she isn't aware of how to interact with others in a normal way, since she mentions in her supports that she was ostracized for her half dragon blood by her foster families. So she gets a better boost when paired with someone who understands what she went through (sibling), or can accept her for who she is (Nowi + father can accept both dragon and human side because they married each other.) Inigo: Improvised Dance Enables target to act again, but target cannot move. (Unit can only dance once per turn.) Basically Veronica's contract skill a turn limit to the dance incase someone wanted to grind exp on Olivia/Inigo. Kinda lame they didnt give us a second dancer but it makes sense why. Ladies man definitely tells you more of his personailty then Improvised dance does tho.

For Tiki, what about a skill like "Nostalgic Courage" If paired with a unit equipped with falchion the character can "use" the falchion to heal 20 hp. Tiki is constantly thinking back to Marth and the battles against Medeus and gharnef. Being near the Falchion could be an anchoring comfort for her on the battlefield and in game could translate to healing. I alternatively thought about her gaining attack and defensive stats.

Robin should have some Aura ability to emphasize his role as a tactician (like +5 to hit avoid, crit and dodge to all supported allies), while your version of Chrom's skill should be turned into an aura both because he lacks the number of supports to make use of it to the fullest extent, and because it will emphasize his role as a leader.

I'd probably swap Virion's personal skill effect's extra hit chance for some extra power instead, since his Skill is already his highest non-HP stat growth. Hell, maybe some extra crit chance instead of the avoid so he can drop his crit-lines on those inferior archers before deleting them from existence. Stahl is kinda just...objectively unfun, and I get that was kind of the point. Could make him have a counterpart to Sully in that it functions with Pair-up. Maybe he provides a fixed amount of stat points as a backpack regardless of what his support-level is with his partner. On one hand, this makes him worse at supporting his wife or A-Support partner, but on the other, if you have a Robinsexual you wanted to use, Stahl would still support them better than any other non-Robin unit. Vaike can stay the same, but I want there to be another effect that every time he's deployed on a map, his weapon will always start out unequipped like he just forgot to take it out of its sheath or something. Miriel as well is kinda just...awful. I think I'd rather change the effect to work only if she's fighting the same class multiple times in one phase, while nerfing the bonus to only provide Avoid. It's okay for scientists to change a variable every now and again, so long as the focus (i.e. the enemy's class) is constant. This skill WOULD be better if she had access to Galeforce, but it enemy-phasing with her not as horrible an idea as it usually is. Kellam having to _intentionally_ hide himself just feels incredibly weird. I'd make it simple where if he's in a Pair-Up with someone with him as the backpack, he has a higher chance than average to guard against attacks. This works both thematically, since as far as the enemy knew, that Pegasus Knight it just fired an arrow at was completely alone, and suddenly their shot just got parried out of nowhere, and in-game as well since Kellam as an Armor-Knight WOULD often be carried around by a high-mobility unit. Lon'qu I'd give something akin to Constance's personal skill from 3H. If he's with a few spaces of, or paired up with a female ally (or Libra), he'll get lower hit since he just wants to get the hell out of there. Meanwhile, if he's completely alone, he'll have _higher_ hit and avoid, as well as an increased chance to activate offensive skills (such as Astra,) since _that_ is where he's in his element. Libra, rather than anything regarding his looks, I'd probably stick closer to his faith or status as a War Monk. If he's fighting tome-users, maybe have it so he can attack from any range, or maybe _just_ against dark-magic users. This might not seem like much, but this could make Libra a fantastic option for dealing with any Mire mages. Henry meanwhile, I'd rather give him something in regards to his proficiency in dark magic. A lot of his supports, like the one with Tharja, mention his knack for countercurses, so for him, I'd give a different skill: "Dispel Hex:" If unit is attacked with magic, opponent's accuracy is divided in half." It's simple, but I really do think it works for him, especially since Resistance is the lower of his two defensive stats. Yarne is just bad though, encouraging him to _stop_ being a Taguel, which feels weird since that's what he's so anxious about. So, I think it'd be more fun to play into the whole skittish animal idea. I forgot if Taguel could ignore forest tiles like the Fates beasts could, but either way, I'd give him the skill: "Don't Hurt Me!" If he starts his turn within three spaces of an enemy, he can move unimpeded through difficult terrain, and will gain a personal Rally Speed and Luck if he ends that turn by Waiting in defensive terrain. It might be a LITTLE powerful, but that's fine, since it's just him running away at the first sign of danger. Plus it's funny to imagine him getting so scared, he runs across a river like it's nothing. Nah, I'd just drop all pretenses and give her the skill "Devour," healing her if she defeats an adjacent enemy while in dragon-form. We all know what she was doing in that Inigo support. Sure, it's just worse Lifetaker, but it can work on either phase so it's whatever. Noire's big thing is her alternate personalities so...above 50%, she'll deal 2 LESS damage, but take 2 less damage in return. _Below_ 50%, she'll deal 5 more damage, but take 2 more. She'll definitely benefit from Vantage or Wrath strategies here, and that's the idea. Plus, if you wanted to KEEP her as an archer, she'll be initiating combat anyway, so you have some control over how much damage she takes. I actually quite like what you did with Gerome. Since he's a flier, he'll typically be alone anyway, running off to some far corner of the map to save a village or something. Just wanted to say that. You didn't cover the SpotPass units, so I'll just make my own for them. Emmeryn - Peacebringer: Allies and enemies within 2 spaces deal -2 damage. (Yeah, it's just Izana's skill. Sue me, it works very well for Emmeryn) Gangrel - Sow Discord: If foe initiates combat and has more than one weapon in their inventory, forces combat with their secondary weapon. (Gangrel's just a tricky little guy, a little goober. If there's a big scary Paladin coming his way with lance at the ready, who could blame him if he just pulled some evasive maneuvers and swapped their weapons around? Note, that these skills WILL also work for boss-appearances, so this will be a test of Robin to make sure he's actually paying ATTENTION to what skills his enemies have) Yen'fay - Ghost of Chon'sin: Deals +5 damage and grants +20 Hit/Avo during combat, but unit takes 15% (non-lethal) damage after combat. (Yen'fay, whether the boss or the SpotPass character, is a man with nothing left to lose. He is a warrior of unparalleled skill -- one who intimidated countless warlords into fighting for Walhart -- but now has no care for whether he lives or dies, so he'll fight to the point it's detrimental to his health) Walhart - Echoes of Yore: If unit initiates combat and is at 100% HP, grants +20 Hit and unit attacks twice (This is just an Alm reference -- giving him the FEH version of Double Lion. Plus, imagine how terrifying it'd be to have a moving boss charging RIGHT at you, and destroying whatever poor sap stands in his way with Wolf Berg) Aversa - Faint Memory: If a support-partner is deployed alongside this unit, unit takes 5 less damage during combat. If two are deployed, unit deals an additional +10 damage (I kinda struggled for Aversa, since I didn't just wanna give her something related to seduction or whatever. Her past is that her family was slaughtered by Validar and she was groomed into seeing him as all that mattered. With him gone, she has nothing, so if she's supported by Robin -- or even better, _married,_ and Morgan is deployed as well, she feels like she has something worth protecting again.) Priam - Resolve: When the user's HP falls to less than 50%, Strength, Skill and Speed are multiplied by 1.5x. (It's just Resolve from the Tellius games. I don't actually care about Priam or Ike, so this one was kinda lazy. I'm sorry)

Nah: Well educated. While in combat with an enemy with a lower weapon rank than her, nah has +20 hit/avoid. My thinking is that with how much nah works to educate herself, she can become an expert in whatever she's studying, using her knowledge as a weapon against less experienced foes. it also helps to encourage her to stay as a manakete, since she can theoretically master weapons from reclassing, she'll have a lot to learn due to her inexperience with them.

If I were to change anything maybe for Stahl go for his big appetite trait and do something like "consume all uses of a vulnerary and gain 30hp". The only other one I'd change is Frederick's because of child unit spoilers. I thought maybe his could be Path Clearer "When stepping on a sparkling tile, increase likelihood of finding an item/weapon." Just a thought but I loved all of these regardless!

Oh hey I started on a list of Awakening personal skills a bit ago! Still haven’t finished it, but I had a similar concept for Miriel with a very different execution. The way my skill works is that she would get a cumulative Hit/Avoid bonus for every time she attacked with the same magic element (Fire/Thunder/Wind), which would reset if she used a different element.

i do think severa’s skill is really fun and in character but i also think it would be fun to have it related to her relationship with her mother, like maybe an increased trigger rate for inherited skills (although i basically always give her galeforce so this would be a bit limited) or a stat bonus for if she fights with a weapon that’s equipped by cordelia/parent units (either a crit bonus or a +1 strength & skill)? i really like lucinas i think it would be cool if it could also work in the context of dual support?

Donnel could have "Transferable skills: Unit adds half of current Weapon exp to any new weapon rank. only works for each Weapon Rank once" the idea here is that Donnel after learning to use lances in his base class is able to transfer the basics of weapon use into the new weapons he gets on promotion, for example if he has D lances he would get Halfway to D Swords on promotion, or if he has C rank he gets D rank on promotion, this works cleanly as most classes W.rank start at E it also makes him the best at using the secondary weapons from promotion, this I think makes training him more worthwhile, further more the wording means you can second seal him from promotion into a base class with different weapons and get really high ranks, which for the ultimate training project is fitting. [it also fits as you have to reclass him out of villager in the first place].

He can access dark mage himself too which is neat. I think if he had like -2 dmg taken and 20 avoid against dark mages and dark magic it'd be cool.

I’ve always thought about Lissa and the potential to have some sort of slight damage negation. Something like “Not so delicate”, unit takes 3 less damage when fighting with a lower weapon rank than the enemy. It would make her promoting into war cleric or sage a bit less scary in the bronze hell phase, and work well with her affinity for the c rank bolt axes she’d use when enemies start getting silver and brave weapons. I was also always a bit disappointed by her bulk, as a unit I expected to have a higher defense for a cleric with how her character is written.

One thing i noticed with the whole "Character was abused in the past & now have a 'funny' quirk because of it" trope is that it's usually exclusive to the woman When one of the men has a very messed up/abused backstory, it tends to be treated with the seriousness & severity it has. For example: Dimitri's trauma & pain is played fully straight, there's next to no jokes about it. Same for Dedue's past, as well as Sylvain's, the last of which suffered abuse from his older brother

I think these are all pretty good, but a small idea I have for Inigo's is him giving every female in the 3 tile range +1 atk and spd, partially because he's trying to impress the girls and/or they're so annoyed being near him that they get more aggressive, and also to tie it into Fancy Footwork in Fates where now the area is smaller and it isn't always up but he can apply it to anyone he wants.

I have to say, I'm not really a big fan of all the skills that give more exp under the right circumstances. Like, Awakening doesn't feel like it has a problem with exp in the first place, especially considering the existence of skirmishes. Maybe a few later game units like the kids could use the boost, but not really those early on. Robins skill feels a bit misplaced at first, like, yeah, they're one of the only units in the game that can class change into any other class, but I feel like most casual players usually don't Second Seal at least the units in unique classes much, which of course includes Tactician Robin, and most experienced players probably would only use it once or twice depending on the build, but I guess it could work to motivate players to reclass the Robins... although even then, the Tactician line has really good skills, so unless you keep them out of Grandmaster, their own unique class late-game, I don't think players will actually get much use out of this. For Chrom, it's an interesting idea, but lore-wise, I feel like he actually has way more awkward moments where he puts his foot in his mouth when interacting with others than ones where he's an actual inspirational speaker... and then also his conflicts in regards to Emmeryns philosophy that he has in the first and second arc. In general, considering the entire "2 halves of the same coin" dynamic Chrom and Robin have, I feel personal skills that interact with each other would make more sense. Like, Chrom gets more evasion or crit being close to Robin because Robin shouts him tactical advise on his opponents next move. And perhaps Robin gets more crit or damage when attacking an opponent adjacent to Chrom to keep him safe. Something like that, similar to the skills other Avatar-retainers got since. I feel like Fredericks skill should also include Emmeryn... and perhaps his potential S-Support partner and Child once he gets them... Sullys skill makes sense lorewise, not really gameplay-wise if she stays as a Cav, I mean, I guess promoted Cavs give 1 move as backpack, but otherwise, she's not really a unit you'd keep in the back, but I guess that's fine. Virions ability would be fun if he had a personal wyvern-riding Archer-class, would allow him to dodge lethal arrows more easily while striking back with his own bow. For Vaike, going with the idea that he's acting as a "teacher", I feel giving him more attack or crit (since it does reference his crit-line, which would make this a more consistent way to hear it) when paired up would make more sense than he himself getting more exp when "teaching" others. Although could also reference how he appearently regularly forgets his weapons by giving him maybe more defense with no weapon equipped, or more uniquely the ability to strike back with, like, half his attack when he is attacked at melee-range with no weapon equipped, basically him punching his opponent when they get close. Could be really fun later on with the Warriors Counter-skill as well. Love the idea for Miriels skill. Aside from me not liking the exp-boost skills, I don't really see how being a klutz would mean Sumia gets more exp for missing? I feel like incorporating misses isn't that bad, but there are multiple routes from there. Either, something like Arthur in Fates, something with a demerit to her but also her opponents, namely less accuracy, which could help her become a dodge-tank even if it'd reduce her combat potential, or something kinda more slapstick-klutzy, where similar to Divine Pulse in Engage, when she misses, she has a Luck% chance to deal some kind of chip damage, from a more comedic 1 damage to half the original attacks damage. For Kellam, I feel his command should be reversed, he should be less likely to be targeted until he actively draws attention. I feel a way to do Lon'qu without debuffing him is to actually buff his speed and maybe even damage when paired up with a woman, he wants to quickly finish the fight and disappear when paired up with a woman. And Donnel DEFINITELY shouldn't have an exp-skill, since his joining-chapter has the condition that he has to level up once to permanently join you. Honestly, I'd rather just make Aptitude his Personal skill, but assuming that's off the table, I'd be for a way to increase his weapon-rank-growth instead. Maybe say when he's paired up with someone with a higher weapon-rank in the weapon he's currently using? Gonna cap this comment here though because otherwise it'll probably become too long for KZread lol

Okay, some more here: I feel like for Cordelia, it'd make more sense to focus on her perfectionism and resulting feeling of inadequancy. Like, to take a feather out of Caeldoris book, have her gain stats when facing a strong opponent, but maybe also only have it trigger when she's not at full HP. For Gregor, I feel a better execution for this would be to give him a bonus when fighting a lower level opponent. On Libra, ironically I'm pretty sure his feminine appearence doesn't actually play a role in most of his supports. Anyways, I remember him having a somewhat darker nature being part of one of his supports, so maybe something that gives Libra more damage when close to an ally who isn't at full HP, or when fighting a damaged enemy, since Libra can fight from the start, and I feel that kind of more aggressive skill contrasts well with him choosing to be a Healer instead. Lucinas feels... like it doesn't really fit her tbh. Referencing her coming from the future to change the past is all well and good, but I feel her just surviving lethal hits and reflecting that damage instead doesn't really fit into that. Especially since with moments like Emmeryns death and Basilios "sacrifice", she herself even doubts if her coming to the past even accomplished anything. So something more like "Future Knowledge", where she gains great buffs to hit, evade and crit, perhaps specifically against named enemies/bosses, perhaps just against higher level enemies, would work better. Or, to somewhat reference both her Future Vision from Heroes as well as her protect- and assist-skills from Engage, the ability to Dual Guard someone in her range against lethal hits, perhaps limited to once per turn but guarenteed, or at regular chances but in exchange whenever. Morgans personal also would make sense in regards to them becoming a Grandmaster, since they idolize their parent, they'd want to master that classline as much as possible, to become a master tactician. For Yarne, I feel Pannes skill makes more sense for him. At the very least, a variation of that skill would make WAY more sense imo than a skill that does nothing for him in his base class. Something else about Nah is that she sometimes gets these destructive urges, which she usually quells by flying out and just laying waste to somewhere where no one's around. Could adapt that by basically giving her Savage Blow. Or, since she usually tries to be the "mature" one and the voice of reason among the children, perhaps something that just gives her bonuses when there's allies around her, maybe specifically allies that already acted. To also try my hand at the Spot Pass-characters: For Gangrel, I feel it kinda depends on if he'd have this skill already when you face him as a boss. If yes, I'd give him something to represent how he clawed his way up from nothing, profiting off of others misfortune, giving him a small buff that stacks whenever ANY unit in a radius around him falls below a certain amount of HP or dies, ally or opponent, with a cap of maybe 3 or 4 times, maybe also only temporary, like for 2 or 3 turns per stack. If not, then I'd give him something that more so reflects his seeking for forgiveness in the few extra-conversations he gets. Like, similar to Libra, increased attack when near an injured ally. He's a spot-pass unit, so I could see them cheap out and just give them similar skills to ones already in the game. It could also represent how he still seems to be prone to returning to his old ways. Could also have it be specifically be when his pair-up backpack is already hurt. For Emmeryn, well, her main nature is that of a pacifist, even with amnesia. In that sense, either a skill that reduces general damage dealt around her, on both sides, or a skill that debuffs the opponent after they attacked her while she has no weapon equipped, perhaps even unequipping their weapon so they couldn't counter. Walhart... technically already has a personal skill, so not really much that needs to be added there, except I'd perhaps also give him an intimidation-aura that reduces the crit avoid or defense of enemies around him. Aversa technically also already has a personal skill... and I feel hers is already more fitting of that than Walharts... but for fairness sake... since after her recruitment, she's kinda out for revenge against the Grimleal, extra damage and crit against either specifically Grimleal-enemies or Dark Magic-users in general would do, I guess. And lastly Priam... the best I can think of is basically Charm, to reference him leading an entire army when we first meet him, or to reference Ike through one of his skills... but the only skill he could really reference there is Nihil... well, I guess keeping his opponent from critting or activating skills mid-battle could work...

A month late on this but looking at Yarne, while this change would be alot more niche and less player effected. Doing something like doubling evasion or giving miracle or some other similar survival related thing when the opponent has a weapon that is effective against a weakness he has. So beast always because he can't change that or say flier and dragon as well if he gets reclassed into a wyvern rider would be on brand. Cause i can easily imagine Yarne knowing everything about beast killers and never going near one for as long as he lives.

I feel like the mark was missed on some of these, but the list is pretty great. At work rn, but I'll post later some personals that I think would fit some of these characters better. Here's my list for the people I think are perfect already: Robin - Generalist Morgan -Specialist Chrom - Man of the People Sully - Unladylike Lissa - Army's Motivator Vaike - Tenure Sumia - Klutz Miriel - Scientific method Kellam - Stealth Lon'qu - Gynophobic Cordelia - Unrequited love Gregor - Life well lived Tharja - Robin's Admirer Henry - Macabre Humor Say'ri - Revolutionary Basilio - West Khan's might Flavia - East Khan's might Owain - Aching blood (it can't be anything else) Laurent - Academic pursuits Yarne - On edge Severa - Pouty Noire - Noire's revenge Here's my changes: Frederick - Guardian: Grants +20 avoid and -5 damage taken to any Ylissean royal or their children. (This is a better version of Jakob's skill evasive partner from Fates. In the Before Awakening DLC of Fates, Jakob and Frederick have a buttling off where Frederick is proved to be the better of the two when he suggests something Jakob hasn't thought of yet, hence the same skill but better) Virion - Philanderer: Grants plus 1 damage dealt, -1 damage taken for every female ally within 3 spaces. (Virion is the true ladies man of this game, we'll get to Inigo in a bit) Stahl - Selfless Companion: Grants +4 to a lead pair up unit's strongest and weakest stats (Stahl calls himself average and Miriel sees him as such because Stahl doesn't put effort in to do something for himself unless pushed to by a companion putting him first. He's always the one going out of his way for others, sometimes going above and beyond. I highly recommend the Sully and Maribelle supports that show this off very well) Kellam - Stealth: +10 to evasion (enemy can't see Kellam well so he avoids more than the typical armor knight should) Lon'qu - Gynophobic: 1.2x speed when paired with or adjacent to a female ally. (The most consistent thing does when around women in his supports is get jumpy. I imagine this would translate to being even faster on the battlefield.) Donnel - Humble Beginnings: Doubles the might of E rank and D rank weapons, breaks E rank and D rank weapons twice as fast (Donnel's eager to learn, and I imagine that translates to overusing his beginning equipment) Maribelle - Noble Heart: Grants +2 damage dealt to all allies within 3 spaces. (Maribelle is constantly trying to better herself, but more importantly, those around her.) Ricken - Eager to a fault: Attracts enemies towards him when 3 spaces away from all allies. (Ricken is reckless and always is looking to prove himself and be seen as a man, which leads to the whole Maribelle debacle.) Panne - Ride or die: Support bonuses with A and S rank partners are multiplied by 1.2x (Panne has a tough exterior but she considers anyone who gets close or makes an effort to really get to know her a part of her warren, and she's very protective of that) Gaius - Sticky Fingers: Skl % chance to steal an item in an enemy's inventory after battle. Gregor - Father figure: Ally units within 3 spaces gain weapon experience 1.5x as fast (I don't think I need to explain this one) Nowi - childish soul: luck % chance to randomly avoid an attack or attack twice. (I imagine Nowi would try to have fun on the battlefield leading to moments where stuff like this happens.) Libra - Vengeful Altruist: Deals 1.5x extra damage against enemies who have previously attacked Ally units. (Libra is selfless, almost to a point where he doesn't value his own life. Like Stahl he helps others. Unlike Stahl, he's witnessed death and suffering all throughout his life. He's a healer, but he's more than prepared to take a life if he deems it just) Tharja - Hex Maniac: Randomly boosts a stat or heals 1 Ally unit every turn. (Tharja is known to cast hexes on her allies to see what they do. While they're not always beneficial in the supports. Tharja usually casts helpful ones in combat. And her doing it every turn shows her dedication to her work.) Anna - Make a Killing: Luck x2 % chance to earn gold after killing an enemy (all Annas have it as their personal in every game since. This is objectively the best Anna so her proc chance is highest.) Olivia - Stage Presence: As long as Olivia performs the "dance" command, enemies are less likely to attack her. (Even enemies are entranced by Olivia's dance). Cherche - Dragon Friend: 1.5x to str, Skl, and spd when in a dragon class. (Cherche is very close to Minerva. I want to emphasize that.) Henry - Magic Prodigy: +20 evade and crit evade when fighting enemy mages. (Henry is shown to be an exemplary mage even by Tharja's standards easily deflecting her hexes. I wanted to show that in gameplay). Tiki - The Voice: Can use the "reinforce" command to deploy 3 green units once per map. (The resistance rallies around tiki and I wanted to put that in the game). Basilio - Cunning general: 1 point of avoid for every point of hp lost (basically why Walhart didn't kill him.) Flavia - Feroxi Shield: +2 defense and resistance to all regna Ferox units within 3 spaces (as much as I love the skills u cooked up. I wanted to build the world a little more by giving these two some skills that tied units together. The Khans are both defenders of the realm so this seems appropriate.) Lucina - Hope Incarnate: Gains +5 avoid for every 2nd generation unit deployed. (Lucina is the hope of the future and those who fight for it.) Kjelle - Honorbound: No terrain bonuses apply to her or enemy units fighting her. (Kjelle is all about honor. Her paralogue happens because she's honorable to a fault.) Cynthia - Aspiring Hero: Grants the rescue command (she literally comes to people's rescue) Brady - Natural Born Pacifist: Gains weapon exp half as fast but staff and level exp twice as fast. (Most of Brady's supports reinforce that he is NOT a fighter despite his appearance.) Yarne - Last of his Kind: (Yes it's the same as yours for Panne's. It makes a LOT more sense for Yarne.) Nah - Calm Thunder: Enemies within 3 spaces suffer -10 hit when an ally is near 3 spaces. Conversely, Nah suffers -10 avoid when an ally is not near 3 spaces. (Nah is a fiercely independent person, but that usually doesn't go well for her. She usually needs companionship, and her desire to be alone tends to lead to bad situations). Inigo - Heartbroke kid: Enemy female units avoid this unit. (Inigo isn't a ladies man. He's a lady repellent. He tries to flirt but pretty much always gets shot down.) Gerome - Dragon Averse: 1.5x SPD, def, and res when outside of a dragon class. (Gerome's paralogue occurred so he could set Minerva free. He didn't want her to see war anymore. He reluctantly joined Chrom's army. I only feel it appropriate if he let Minerva finally live freely.)

My philosophy is that Personal Skills have to be unique and support characterization, they have to be either strong or interesting, but they *can* be both. I think most Personal Skills across the series are... Pretty boring, but this series always makes things interesting

I think if awakening had personal skills the spotpass characters (Gangrel, Walhart, Emmeryn, Yen’fay, Aversa, and Priam) would also have personal skills, trying to think of ideas for those

Ngl it’s really absurd thinking that fates was the first game to have universal personals. It seems like something awakening would have pioneered. Libra’s one of my favorite characters but he has a ton of different things you could pull from; an ability called “Righteous Anger” that raises damage dealt by 3 after taking more than 15 damage during combat, “Dark Past” which raises damage done and reduces damage taken against dark magic; “Godly Grace” which could have a resistance% chance of adding 4 speed at the start of each turn, I’m very normal about Libra I swear

No Whalhart, Aversa, Yen'Fey, Emmeryn and Priam? Well, I guess two of those already have pseudo personal skills and one of the others really shouldn't exist.

I really wish Awakening had Fates' unit and reclass system the cast is so fun but there's just so much less depth to their unit design 😭

I didn't want to tackle the spot pass units both because I'm annoyed by how their existence affects/undermines the story and because the video was long enough without them. Maube I'll look at them in a follow up eventually tho 🤷🏻‍♀️
