What If Aliens Make Contact? - Neil deGrasse Tyson on Intelligent Alien Life

Ғылым және технология

What would we do as a civilization if we found evidence for intelligent alien life? How would we deal with it?
Neil deGrasse Tyson explains why alien civilizations may be rare, even though life in general may be ubiquitous throughout the galaxy and beyond.
Neil deGrasse Tyson also explains how intelligent alien life might not think of us as intelligent given the fact how we think of chimpanzees. We share around 99% common DNA with chimps yet we cannot communicate with them. Is it hubris to even imagine we could communicate with an alien species billions of years ahead of us?
The cosmos is filled with trillions of stars. There are about 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone. Many of them, are just like our own sun. Based on that number, it would seem we are most certainly not alone in the galaxy let alone in the universe.
So where are all the aliens?
As far as our civilization has come technologically, we are nowhere near of reaching the stars.
It takes light, the fastest thing there is in the universe, about 4.2 years to reach the nearest star to Earth, Proxima Centauri.
And there lies the problem...Space. Its unimaginably vast. If our descendants want to venture to the distant stars, they will have to invent new means for space travel.
In physics, a tunnel with two ends at separate points in spacetime is known as a wormhole. But the lack of evidence for intelligent aliens is either telling that they are extremely rare if not non-existent, or that wormholes are not physically possible.
Even with our current technologies it is estimated that the our galaxy the milky way can be colonized within less than a billion years.
So if an alien civilization with our current capabilities started colonizing the galaxy a billion years ago, we should be seeing signs of their presence by now. And if that was the case then with the words of the famous physicist Enrico Fermi, Where is everybody?

Or, that communication does exists, and they are simply waiting for Earth to naturally reach that point and not interfere with the evolution, perhaps because by doing so they would interfere with our natural ability to reach that point. And if we never reach that point, then maybe because we are not as intelligent as we think. The biggest thing though is if the world of advanced civilizations exist, then resources are already in drought in the universe, which means any contact to us is going to be in more interest in any resource we have. So, if that contact ever does get made, we can almost bet that we are going to be fighting extermination, unless that intelligent being is merciful to save us and perhaps make us allies or make us slaves potentially, but then again we still lack the tech to even protect our own solar system or even our own planet from these beings, so what allies would we ever be? Yeah, if super intelligent aliens exist, its kinda a problem for us as a species. And say we gain the tech to go out and colonize/mine. Then we will for sure find something out there because by then we will also be entering a world of fighting for universal resource assuming those being exist. Honestly if we were the first being to reach this point, that would be kinda cool because we would literally have access to entire universe to ourselves. there would no longer be fight for resource for a long time.

It makes sense that an advanced civilization would start exploring for the purpose of resources rather then the pursuit of knowledge and first contact. I think that a society like ours has lofty goals and dreams of finding new life outside of our own planet. But it will come to a point where our own problems become to much to ignore and we will start looking inward and fixing our own planet to keep it habitable. This would include exploring all areas such as the oceans and in the end, we will have the technological advancements to not only clean up our planet but harness its power. This will lead to more advancements and us then being able to harness and store energy more efficiently from our sun. This will all lead to us becoming a type 1 civilization according to the Kardashev scale. This in turn will lead to more and more advancements and we will eventually find the need to explore again and look for more resources. After all of these advancements, there may be a group who uses all the progress we have made by then to start seeking out new life again for the purpose of knowledge and not for survival.

How many species are living right now?, Add to that all the species that ever lived, it's billions upon billions of different species and , yet, we still have a sample of 1 for intelligent life. What if, just what if, intelligent life is the anomaly? An error of nature? Evolution teaches us that life evolves to adapt to its environment, we do the opposite, we adapt our environment to suit our needs, which is self defeating in a way. Because we destroy the very nature that allows life to flourish in the first place. What will we do when we won't be able to breathe due to pollution, or grow any plants? Do you think we'll ever be capable of repairing the atmosphere?, or repairing the soil that we contaminated with our pesticide and plastics and other garbage? We don't even know how to do that right now. And we certainly don't have the means to even start. So yeah, puny humans, keep on dreaming, cause you have to be asleep in order to dream. Nite Nite.

I respect Tyson but I feel he misinterprets the idea of contacting other intelligent life. To paraphrase: "Our small DNA difference to chimps is massive in regards to our mental differences. So 5% difference to another lifeform might be incomprehensible. What's to say aliens wouldn't view us as we view chimps?" Ok now wait a minute....how do we look at chimps? We view them as less than and less intelligent but we don't disregard them. We do not ignore their existence and in fact we interact with them in very profound ways. We care for them. We befriend them. We study them. We communicate with them (on their terms). So why would aliens do the same to us? Their communication methods may be leagues ahead but we don't try to communicate and interact with chimps using radios. We use sign language and speech patterns. Why wouldn't aliens be able to push their preferred communication method aside and interact with us on our terms for the sake of studying, befriending, and caring for us? Our number 1 companion on earth are dogs. We profoundly love dogs as a species. We communicate with them in many different ways. We don't ignore their existence and we do not study them covertly from out of sight. We interact with them directly. We love, care for, and befriend all types of beings we consider ourselves to be superior to. So why would aliens act like we can't even be given the time of day. Doesn't advanced intelligence come with the burden of curiosity? The quest for gathering even more knowledge? I cannot accept that a super advanced alien civilization would disregard or lack a level of curiosity required to make contact. If they aren't seen they aren't there because if they were there they'd have to reach out in the quest for understanding.

The counter-argument to that is if we found microbial life outside our planet, we would take tremendous interest in it, so regardless how far advanced an alien civilization is, they would be interested in another sentient lifeform who dominated their planet, as primitive as we would seem to them. Also, the 0.5% difference between us and chimps is evolutionary. Our potential capacities are therefore different. The advantage an intergalactic civilization would have over us is time of technological advancement, not necessarily raw intellectual capacity. Most likely, they just existed for longer and accumulated greater knowledge to be able to travel accross the galaxy. Although they can have greater intellectual capacity, its not obligatory, because evolution would only require them to reach a certain level in their original ecosystem before they stopped evolving, since the laws of natural selection wouldnt apply anymore after they reach the top of every food chain on their planet...

Switching gears - we should also consider what WE will/would do if we were to stumble upon an intelligent alien species that is a few thousand (or even a few hundreds) years BEHIND us in technology, etc. That would appear to be an equal possibility.

We'd be interested in what capacity? Would we try and communicate with microbial life? We don't make any effort to communicate with the microbial life we have at home... - we don't even much care whether our closet relatives understand us or comprehend us fully, because it's quite clear that they're, fundamentally, nothing like a comparison to us. Like everything else on this planet, they're an entire order of Reality, below us. We are of this world, but we may as well not be - we operate on a completely separate plane of existence. We're like nothing this planet has ever seen - and will never see again. The Sapiens: we've ridden a runaway train of intelligence that's taken us so far in only 300,000 years, it would be impossible for us to communicate even with our own closet species ancestors - and they would have absolutely no hope of even fully comprehending what we actually are. If we found a planet of aliens that are Neanderthals in comparison to us, what are we going to do? They're intelligent - but there's intelligence and there's intelligence: will we make plans to teach them our calculus? Probably not. Even if we wanted to do that, they'd first have to comprehend what numbers and ideas are - and they would have no hope of doing that as they just wouldn't have the capacity. We'd be much too far removed to reach each other on an intellectual level. How ever would we expect a hypothetical alien race to do what we would consider nonsensical, when that alien race would be so far removed from us that they'd have the facility to, at least, travel across the universe to get us - perhaps across dimensions and Time, for all we know - when we, on the other hand, can't even leave our back yard, much less go to their house... We'd be scientifically fascinating and slightly pitiful, at best - and an easily overwhelmed and relatively degenerate resource, at worst.

If aliens are roaming around the galaxy (or nearby star systems) then wouldn't they have mixed motives? Good and bad, exploration and exploitation, trade with others yet colonization? Because if we get star travel, wouldn't we humans have mixed motives? (And no, aliens won't have quite the same thinking and feeling as we do, but maybe some similar needs and goals.) -- If aliens do find Earth, isn't it more likely their arrival would be faster than we would expect, and one big ship or a fleet, but either way, with technology and number of beings and spacecrafts (shuttles, fighters) more than enough to dogfight and/or land in multiple places simultaneously, satellite network to blanket the planet too. If their tech is so advanced they can travel between stars (tens, hundreds, or thousands of light years in shorter than a year), then it's likely they could overwhelm our technology easily without much of a fight. But that doesn't preclude humans waging a very tenacious guerrilla war, dug into remote places, hard to eradicate. (Downside: Wouldn't smart aliens anticipate that?) Aliens could be peaceful instead. Or incomprehensible. Or maybe one small ship arrives by accident, an interstellar flat tire / out of gas / car trouble moment. Or they arrive and ignore us, we and they cannot understand each other, maybe don't even recognize we or they are intelligent, or unable for a long period to communicate and understand each other? -- We can't yet communicate with dolphins, and we aren't sure if they are intelligent, or what portion of their signals might be language and what might be sonar maps, constantly refreshed, or a host of other differences, and yet dolphins are mammals like us, so there must be some things in common, like we have with other mammals. So...so many questions on how alien contact could happen.

But the 1 time, it drew a crowed of between 30-50 people. And it just buzzed around in the sky for a solid 20-30 minutes. Then it zipped away so fast and silent like nothing I’ve ever seen before in life or even in a movie. And about 30 seconds later, 2 fighter jets went by at crazy speeds in the direction it went. The crowed and I were all just left wondering wtf we just watched happen. Was pretty crazy.

A possible chess strategy for making contact with an extraterrestrial being, regardless of their level of advancement, could involve playing a balanced and patient game. For a potentially more advanced extraterrestrial opponent, it might be beneficial to demonstrate strategic thinking, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from their moves. By avoiding overly aggressive tactics and focusing on solid defense and long-term planning, you could convey respect and interest in cooperation. On the other hand, if the extraterrestrial being seems less advanced, one could play in a more open and educational manner. Offering opportunities for them to learn and improve their game while maintaining a sense of fairness and sportsmanship can foster communication and potential mutual understanding. In both scenarios, maintaining a friendly demeanor, showing curiosity, and being open to unexpected outcomes could help establish a basis for communication beyond the game of chess. Remember, the goal is not just to win the game but also to build a bridge for connection and exchange between different beings

How long do you think that would last after watching our species all to often indulging in all to frequent malignant antics. If they could communicate & choose a spokesperson that would only alienate (pardon the pun) other factions. It is said that a civilisation with vastly superior tech would be interpreted as magic & they gods. Well to have dealings with our species they would almost certainly need the patience of a Saint.

I believe that evolution of intelligence and the emergence of self conscience are, in part, the evolutionary result of curiosity - curiosity is key to evolution. That said, intelligent species would be naturally curious about us, and they’ll surely would investigate, they would most probably assume a “non-interference” approach. They’re probably here already, in stealth mode, “invisible” to us. That’s the most plausible theory for me.

For example, why assume advanced aliens compete to colonize planets, when they can (and need to) engineer, or commandeer, forever homes they can control -from steering to the bio, chem and geologic forces; and that possess eternal defensive attributes against all comers including the unforgiving universe itself. So crystalized dead stars, not evolving planets, are a safer ass-ump-tion, when it comes to advanced alien housing in this universe.

(4) In July 1947, I was stationed at Fort Worth Army Air Field [later Carswell Air Force Base] in Fort Worth, Texas. I served as Chief of Staff to Major General Roger Ramey, Commander, Eighth Air Force. I had the rank of Colonel. (5) In early July, I received a phone call from Maj. Gen. Clements McMullen, Deputy Commander, Strategic Air Command. He asked what we knew about the object which had been recovered outside Roswell, New Mexico, as reported in the press. I called Col. William Blanchard, Commander of the Roswell Army Air Field, and directed him to send the material in a sealed container to me at Fort Worth. I so informed Maj. Gen. McMullen. (6) After the plane from Roswell arrived with the material, I asked the Base Commander, Col. Al Clark, to take possession of the material and to personally transport it in a B-26 to Maj. Gen. McMullen in Washington, D.C. I notified Maj. Gen. McMullen, and he told me he would send the material by personal courier on his plane to Benjamin Chidlaw, Commanding General of the Air Material Command at Wright Field [later Wright Patterson AFB]. The entire operation was conducted under the strictest secrecy. (7) The material shown in the photographs taken in Maj. Gen. Ramey’s office was a weather balloon. The weather balloon explanation for the material was a cover story to divert the attention of the press. (8) I have not been paid or given anything of value to make this statement, which is the truth to the best of my recollection. Signed: T. J. Dubose Date: 9/16/91 Signature witnessed by: Linda R. It’s interesting to think about intelligent life without the hubris and determine that 13+ billion years of expansion no doubt injected emergence of evolution in the universe. Some people these days claiming contact is wholly dependent on the possibility of chance should consider the truth about UAP’s, an Alien interaction deemed opulent by witnesses who have a difficult time explaining the maneuvers. I’m pro belief because there’s something marvelous in the grand scheme of things and humanity can learn to recognize the importance of seeing beyond, and step into the cosmic mainframe.

Even when we didn't know there was an LA across from NYC, the only way to get there was to walk. Imagine telling that walker, only a few hundred years old, that it is possible to avoid the ground altogether and get there MUCH faster. He would make similar comments like yours saying 'travel by air would destroy us before we got 10 feet".

Humans will certainly be interested to find even single cell alien life. So the argument that advanced alien would not show interest in us is absurd

If it became undeniable there were beings among us, from a completely separate evolution on a distant planet, with a superior intelligence (and whom therefor we'd be completely at the mercy of), would be terrifying and probably cause global panic. Anyone who doesn't understand this has seen too many episodes of Star Trek.

it requires intelligence to appreciate living worms and understand their behavior and their complexity. Aliens more advanced than us will even be able to communicate and even speak ants language. something that we are not able to do.

Good point…they may be infinitely better communicators than we are. The Bible and Torah discuss having many distinct languages, rendering us unintelligible to one another, as a handicap of mankind. It’s unlikely to be a problem, for a higher intelligence.

I think it's a 2-way answer, they are already here or the laws of physics do not allow wormholes or teleportation to exist, otherwise, they would be already here. a civilization 1000,000 years more advanced than us and still stuck in their start cluster this might mean that laws of physics have limits and there is no way around them, that would be really scary.

  • @grafixnetz

Back then, 250 years ago, the laws of physics would allow someone to only walk or ride a horse from NYC to LA. It's just that man has tinkered with those laws to such a degree that he can cover the distance in a few hours. Walking takes "3,000 miles for 67 days"

@@grafixnetz that's why I'm saying that if they are 100,000 years more advanced, they should already be here, if they are not, then there are some limits to the laws of physics that do not allow teleportation or wormholes.

@@MisterNarrador I agree 100%. The bible speaks very often of angels in visceral, real, tangible forms. Other 'creatures' are mentioned too. There are the ancient civilizations that reference out-of-this-world contact. A contact 2000 years ago is still considered 'recent' if we want to be honest. Yes, they have been, are and will be here often.
