What I Wish I Knew Before I Sailed a Carnival Cruise

The first time sailing a new cruise line is when you'll learn a lot of new things about what makes that line unique. These days, I've sailed Carnival plenty, but there are some things that stand out that I wish I knew before I took that first trip.

While you cannot buy your way into Havana while on the cruise like you can with the Spa, if you book the Grand Suite, you get Havana access without staying in Havana... Reason I say this, I recently married, All my friends were going on a cruise, Havana had no rooms left with a Balcony, so I found Grand Suites do get it... It costs come good change but worth it. Then you can buy your way into the spa and have 100% ship access.

I've been sailing with carnival for 13 years and picked up good info along the way. Some money saving ones are you can bring a 12 pack of sodas per person. And one bottle of wine per adult 21+. Just don't forget your corkscrew! Power outlets are a scarce thing in most rooms. Bring a power strip so you can charge your phones and toys all at once. And I would suggest bringing shampoo and soap because the ones they provide are pretty rough. And when you board the ship it's a gamble if you get your luggage right away. So if you have anything you may want asap just bring it in your carry on. Also you must carry on any beverages you bring. If you put them in your checked bags they will be taken. And Remember at the nightly dinner the portions are fairly small. So order multiple entrees. And avoid buying things right when you get off the ship at ports. Go a little further in town to get better prices.

@@itstheACE562 that's absolutely not true on carnival. This is direct from the carnival website......On embarkation day, a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, energy drinks, juice, and milk), packaged in cans or cartons, may be brought on board and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less, per person. Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception - at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring one 750 ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage. Outside this exception, all liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded.

We have gone to Alaska many times. We felt that despite some restaurants being closed, overall it was great. Room service was excellent. One of my favorite extras that Carnival offers…laundry. I always come home with nothing but clean clothes. This makes it great once you disembark and return home.

Just got off Carnival Vista. 1. Coffee, water and ice are on Lido Deck #10. I used a collapsible water canteen and my coffee travel mug to limit the trips. 2. Use the center stairs/elevator to avoid traveling through more crowded areas. 3. We used the Serenity deck a lot. It only had a hot tubs, so if you get hot, you need to cool off at the showers or hit the full body misters near the water slides.

My first cruise was Royal Carribean and the next few afterwards. It took a few years before I cruised on Carnival. From the first Carnival cruise to now, it is the most fun and friendly crew, service, staff and passengers. The fun starts the moment I get on the ship and goes all the way to the last day. I now take a hot/cold cup on the ship for water. I fill it with ice and water in the buffet in the morning especially on port days and do not pay for bottled water. You are right about the Serenity deck being peaceful. You need to get there early to get some shade though. Folks go to Serenity and stay all day on the beds and comfortable loungers. I don't sit on the pool deck much other than if there's an event going on like Sail Away and Groove for Saint Jude.

Cruise insurance is also a must. Something else we always do is the "Behind the Fun" (Pre-Covid) which is a tour of the galley, bridge, and operations that are off limits to everyone but staff. I've sailed RC for many many years. I totally agree with you. So with us it's not a money thing. Our last cruise we were on Royal caribbean and stayed in the Royal Suite best room on the ship its huge! but alot of people on there were who's better then who aditude. My wife and I laughed at it we were like if the people who had there I'm better then you aditude only knew what stateroom we were in but we never told anyone our room. We book the Royal suite most of the times because even a week before the cruise that suite is usually available. I will say that we are cruising carnival more often because we like to have fun with Everyone and we don't look at the size of people wallets. I've taken alot of our friends on cruises one time we took 26 people and paid for a few people's cruises just so they could go and have fun. I find that the people on carnival are so friendly and caring seems like everyone is trying to help everyone and that's awesome. I just got back from a Carny cruise to Cozumel. I haven't cruised in about 10 years. Ships used to have smoking/cigar lounges on them. Now they've banished smokers to the 9th deck starboard in the high wind, or 3rd deck starboard just above the water where you can't hear yourself think. Makes it kind of difficult to enjoy myself when I'm either sitting in 30+ knot winds up top, or just above the waterline below. Apparently they converted the lounge into a "library/reading room" that was an unused, useless space the entire cruise. Great thinking Carnival. I'm not a drinker (like so many of the people I was around on the cruise), nor do I gorge myself on cheap buffet food and desserts, and I can sit in the sun pretty much anywhere, so I guess I'm done with cruising.

@@coreyjharmon it sounds like a lot. But if you plan to have around 6 or 7 alcoholic beverages per day, then you break even. That’s really easy to do, especially on “Fun at Sea” days. A mimosa at breakfast, a couple fruity drinks during the day to stay cool, another couple at dinner, and you’re already where you need to be without even trying. Truthfully it’s worth it if you enjoy drinking on vacation. You don’t have to keep pulling out your wallet and thinking about how much you’re spending. It’s just nice to be able to try new drinks and not worry about what it costs. I’ve traveled Carnival a few times and am always budget conscious. I’m going with my wife on a cruise this April, and it’s a no brainer for us. Just my opinion. Do some reverse math on how much you plan to drink and it should be an easy call from there.

Just went on our first cruise almost 2 weeks ago, and I have to say the staff and crew did an exceptional job, i didn't realize that we would literally have to do nothing for ourselves if we didn't want to, towel animals were the cutest, drinks were superb, i highly recommend a kiss on the lips, casino can be addictive, the fod was great minus guys burgers, one is suppose to be made of bacon but ended up being a regular burger with bacon and was bland, cherry on top has great desserts, the late night dances were a lot of fun, we will be going again

You can't get snacks in the bar at the comedy club. Sometimes they will have back-to-back 18+ shows. If you're drinking you'll want something salty. So ether bring your own peanuts or chips from shore, get peanuts in the day time from the Alcomy Bar, or get a big plate of fries from the buffet before the show starts.

My first cruise was on Disney Cruise Line, after Disney pulled the same stunts that Apple and Starbucks do by lowering quality and trading on name brand for people who have more money than common sense I got sick of Disney and took my first non Disney cruise on the Carnival Dream and loved it so much the next month I was on the Carnival Breeze. Everyone I knew said that Disney would ruin me for any other cruise. I totally disagree I LOVE Carnival the staff is so super friendly from the maintenance worker to the officers, and where I use to try to spend 40 days a year at Disney world my new goal is to spend 40 days a year on a Cruise ship for less money, more enjoyment, and a much better value.

We were booked on the Vista out of Galveston before the pandemic when they had engine trouble and had to cancel. We got a full refund, 100% FCC, AND $600 obc! Before Covid. I really didn't find Ensenada as great as everyone said. But I loved doing more on the Ship. And there was never enough time to do all the different activates. Plus, many overlapped. Also, Catalina Island is a trip in itself. I now know how to book and plan a vacation just for that island. Carnival should have a cruise that only stays around Catalina island for 3 to 4 days. I am a travel agent and I thank you for all the information. I am 56 and I didn't travel much until the past 6 years. I wish i started this when I was in my 20's. If you are from colder climates the temperature in the summer months can be brutal (I’m from Canada; It was so hot outside that we had to retreat back to the ship after a shot while to cool off.), so keep that in mind. When it comes to food and drinks, try and avoid ice cubes and street vendors. The bacteria in the water is different from the USA and other regions so you may get sick. Safety wise, it is honestly quite good. Gangs and Cartels avoid tourist areas because they are a lifeline for the Mexican Economy, and there is a large marine/police presence in those areas. I wasn’t able to book any excursions but they seem fun.

I went back to carnival after many years away. (1997 carnival destiny) I wish I had known how hard it was to get fresh berries for breakfast. other cruise lines will provide upon request at the beginning of the trip. I was told the berries were for the cakes. Also, I wanted to order eggs to my cabin for breakfast and I was willing to pay a fee for this like on other cruise lines. Again, I was told that this was not an option. But the sea day brunch and everyday dinner options were AMAZING!!!!!!! 👏 Also, it was super easy to order food around my allergies. On other cruise lines it can be a bit of a challenge but it gets done. However, Carnival did an excellent job on that. And I wish I had known carnival charges for an extra copy of the same picture but not a reprint to touch up a spot on a picture, odd. Some cruise lines, not all, dont charge for this. They don't tell you it's an extra charge. I figured it out upon check out and decided on another pose and gave my friend the better pose. Not a big deal.

I don't know how it is at other Carnival cruise ports but here in Long Beach California, no one tells you to leave your heavier luggage with the luggage porters after you get off the elevator at the parking structure! On my first Carnival cruise from Long Beach, I ended up taking my large luggage through the Carnival terminal and onto the ship. Here is the tip...as soon as you get off the elevators on the parking structure, instead of turning right to the cruise terminal, you turn left to meet the luggage porters who will take your larger luggage onto the ship for you. You must remember to take out any important documents, medication and your allowable wine bottle and non-alcoholic drinks. You will not see your checked luggage for a few hours. Also, any allowable wine or champagne and non-alcoholic beverages must be carried onto the ship. If you don't know, Carnival will allow each passenger to bring 750ml of wine or champagne, and each passenger is also allowed to bring non-plastic bottled non-alcoholic drinks like a 12 pack of soda in cans. I recommend that you buy bottled water on the ship. It's about $5 for a 12pack of Crystal Geyser. You could also fill up your personal water bottles at the buffet area and use them for your cabin.

We’ve been on two carnival cruises and have two upcoming and looking for a third. We are big fans and plan to cruise every year when I get 3 weeks vacation in 2027.
