Comment below and this is the company I use for Travel Insurance: bit.ly/worldnomads_travelins For more cost of living info, check out this video about living in Lisbon, Portugal: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gK130cmscdLNhLQ.html (PS: There's a typo in the US expenses at the end (it should be $500 for Amazon purchases) but the total amount is correct.)

I live between both UK and US (originally from UK). I've spent more time in the UK this year, but I tend to spend a lot more whenever I'm in the US (Chicago west loop). I live in a modern one-bedroom city centre apartment in both places, The UK rate is much lower at £825 and I'm in the perfect spot for the city. I'm fortunate to have my businesses set up elsewhere, so the cost of living crisis hasn't affected me. But I can definitely see how it's affecting people in society, and have noticed city councils declaring bankruptcy lately. There's too much to pack into a comment, and I'm having to write this from an anonymous account as I'm easily linked to my business and location. But I want to say, it's great having a Costco in both UK and US. I like being able to walk to places in the UK, while being able to drive to the countryside not too far away. Also, back in 2021 you could have leased a brand new car for the same price as your monthly Uber bill.

    13:50. Correction on the tax system. I don't know where you got that table, but it's not remotely correct. The UK's income tax brackets are actually as follows. £0 - £12,570 = 0% tax. £12,571 - £50,270 = 20% tax. £50,271 - £125,140 = 40% tax. Over £125,140 = 45% tax.

That’s tax rates in England and Wales. In Scotland tax is higher. For example the 40% tax applies from £43,500 pa instead of £50k. In fact you pay an extra £1550 in tax for those earning £50k pa in Scotland. This is one reason we’re planning a move to England.

@@JustAnotherJarhead That's 40% on only a specific amount earned between £50,271 and £125,140. It's not 40% of your entire total earnings. E.G. If you earn £60,000 a year. £12,571 of it is not taxed, £37,000 of it is taxed at 20%, and only £9729 of it is taxed at 40%. So in total of that £60,000 salary, just 18%, £11,291.60 is taken in income tax. In terms of salary contribution towards all types of tax, the UK is one of the least expensive countries in Europe and only moderately more expensive than the US. The average person in the UK contributes between 27-35% of their entire income towards all taxes. The average person in America contributes 20-35% of their entire income towards all taxes. Taken from the OECD. However, Americans have greater post-tax private costs than UKers and Europeans because Americans have to partly or entirely finance out of their own-pocket certain services, such as health care, college education, child care, food, etc, which UKers and Europeans already get pre-paid for them either entirely or partly from their higher taxes.

The media invents these words to shift the blame for inflation from the central bank to businesses that are operating to maximise their profits as they always do. Even if a business doesn't act to maximise its profits it makes no difference because the excess money is still in the economy and it will bid up other prices in other places. e.g. if all supermarkets agreed to freeze prices you might see rents increase instead, then the media would invent a new term for evil landlords!

I'm a UK/US dual national;. No one commutes from Manchester to London unless they stay in London during the week and weekends in Manchester as the distance is too far. Also, to obtain a long-term lease, you need to have proof that you have a visa that is valid over the entire term of the lease. If you have an automobile, the cost of fuel is more than double that in the US. Also, London has the most expensive public transportation in Europe. If you earn income in the UK, you must pay taxes to HMRC. However, you can deduct these taxes from your US income taxes. BTW, I too am from Miami. However, I haven't lived in the US sine 1998.

Housing in the UK is very expensive for the simple reason that land is in very short supply; in most of the country the land a house is on is worth far more than the house. The 'upside' of this is that house design is better for compact use, and more importantly, towns are more compact so car use is not often essential. But compare like with like- compare London to New York or a similar rural area and the prices are more similar.

Organic food in the UK and other Western European nations is much more readily available than in the US. And also significantly cheaper than in the US. Even non-organic food in all of Western Europe is much closer to organic food than non-organic food in the US is. Because legally by default, non-organic food in all of Western Europe contains far fewer fertilisers, pesticides, additives and preservatives than non-organic food in the US contains. Western Europe has massively stricter food safety regulations than the US. All store-bought food in general throughout all of Western Europe is half to 4 times less expensive than in the US. Because food and agriculture are massively more subsidised from taxes in Europe, than they are in the US. Are there not produce markets/farmers markets in the UK?

  • @egris00

Not much. Especially since Brexit many farms have had to close down as there's no labour workers available to pick the food crops. Instead the UK now imports a greater percentage of their food. No farmer's markets. Only "foodie markets" selling imported deli foods at three times the price.

If you do try Scotland, make sure to take a good supply of rain gear & warm clothing if traveling in the winter months & midge spray for the summer. Hello Kristin I am a new subscriber just came across you channel today. You said how much you are paying for internet with Virgin and that is about right. We have had issues with them so we tried out 3 via Mobil connection as it was only £20 a month. We have 4 very active users all streaming everything and it always works( 9 months so far). If you are in a good signal area on you phone it might work well for you. I have no affiliation with any of them I am just really happy to be paying 1/3 of what Virgin wanted and 1/4 of what BT wanted. Setup is a total easy, just put in the SIM card plug it in and it works. Anyway, I will be enjoying your content take care and enjoy your time in the UK. I moved here 20 years ago from North America and it is really interesting to see and hear about other’s experiences as when I came KZread did not exist.

Ref tzxes. The video is a little misleading. The first £12,570 you earn is totally tax free. The NEXT £37,700 is taxed at 20% i.e. JUST your income above £12,570. If you earn £12,570 + £37,700 i.e. £50,270 you pay tax at 20% just on £37,700 which is £7,540. Hence the effective tax rate is £7,540 on £50,270 which is 15%. However, note we also have to pay National Insurance (theoretically to pay into our government pension...) at another 12% on earnings up to £50,268 and 2% above that.

Brief visits to larger places (Walmart v Tesco) was similar.

You got a good deal on your flat though with everything thrown in with the rent. Utilities are very expensive on their own so you got a bargain esp., with the colder weather coming in, you won`t need to skimp on the heating. That alone is a bonus.

Everything you said is true apart from tax, in the UK everyone has a rax allowance of about 12k, so 40% tax occurs at just over 50k. As for hotels in London, can get room futher west in Ealing for £120 a night and the Lizzy line into the centre is only 20 mins and costs £8. So worth considering.

Its also worth noting that garbage collection is automatic for everyone. This is covered in council tax. But, I must say that your $4,000 / month figure is very high,...based on comparative costs for other places you have lived. I cannot help but wonder, if it is the case that you are price sensitive to any degree,...why would you continue to live in that place/country? Even in most parts of Spain or Italy the prices would be lower (not including exclusive areas obviously). Business must be getting better.

Yes, all healthcare costs are considerably less than the US in every country that has Universal Healthcare. Universal healthcare systems strictly limit how much profit can be made on all medications, treatments and insurance premiums and so set strict price-limiting controls on them. E.G. in the UK insulin costs $8.00 USD, in the US insulin costs $99.00 USD. Even private care and private medical insurance in universal healthcare countries are massively cheaper than private care and medical insurance in the US. Also, a foreign citizen in the UK would only receive a bill for non-emergency care. Any emergency care a foreign citizen receives in the UK is always free of charge.

You say that you're in the UK as a tourist, you also say that you work as a DJ. I'm no expert but in her book about moving to the UK from the US (Three Things You Need to Know About Rockets)Jessica Fox tells us how she got into bother by doing voluntary work whilst here on a tourist visa. Be careful.

The clear trend at the moment is everywhere is getting more expensive! This will probably just get worse as global dominance of ‘the West’ wanes, and poorer countries develop more, and start to compete for resources.

How is it that food is so much more expensive in the Us than in Europe even in the UK which is importing food from France, Poland, Ukraine or Spain is beyond me. Not to mention that a lot of American ingredients are illegal in Europe , for example burgers in McDonald's have different ingredients... Well, Americans can enjoy a bit more chemicals, GMO etc in the land of the free... good luck mutating !

I'm a UK resident aged 57 in good health. When I looked at health insurance earlier this year it cost about £850 per year for a decent basic package, but you could spend a lot more depending on the extras you included.

@@jrd33 sounds reasonableish. In the UK, private insurance is sort of back stopped by the NHS in any case. Si a foreign national may have higher premiums. Many legal immigrants are now paying NHS 'access' fees before they even get here, so they'd be backed stopped by the NHS too.

@@TravelingwithKristin I think with the craziness going in the US, people are wanting to survive but safely. Some of the countries you suggested in your last video are dangerous. Sadly all of South America is becoming so also. I am retired on a fixed income. I may have to restart my online business. If not for housing cost and needing to have a car, I would prefer the US over any country as its my home but even there is being destroyed by the crazy left. It makes me angry how so many bash the US while also benefiting from it. No loyalty. Instead they run to countries that take our money, try to act like us while bashing and trying to destroy us. I know as I have lived in many of them. Yes the US is very flawed and now more corrupt then ever but Canada and Australia are already doomed and have lost their freedoms(my friend live there and keep me up to date) and as much as all of you KZreadrs bash the US when the US falls we are all doomed.

@@TravelingwithKristin Exactly, the nurses / doctors are trained in providing medical attention, not trained in “billing” as they almost never do it or understand it. Especially in London, where I live, which is multicultural, it would not occur to the hospital staff that you may be “foreign”, as most people have some accent here. Everyone’s used to it … you be seen as a Londoner who does not pay.
